Chapter 20
Chapter Twenty
~~~~~ Alex – Enough is Enough ~~~~~
A week has passed since I’ve seen her beautiful face. A week has passed since I’ve heard her voice and listened to her musical laugh. A week has passed since I’ve smelled her intoxicating smell. An entire week has passed since I’ve seen Kylie. An entire miserable week without her.
“cheer up my Mexican,” the voice has become alarming, setting my instincts to overdrive every time I hear it’s sound. The voice usually means trouble, so I stay as far away from it as possible. I have learned to ignore the voice and its owner to avoid problems and confrontations. Although, the alarming voice does not know when to stop. “Mexico is not going anywhere. You’ll see it when you get deported in a few days. Beans and tortillas made by the bitch you call mother will-“
She is the queen of this place. Every girl is scared of her and will do anything she tells them to do. No one stands up to her nor dares to look at her in the eye. I on the other hand, refuse do anything she tells me to do and I’m certainly not afraid of her.
When coming to this place, I decided to avoid trouble and just get this over with. Do my time and get out. That all changed the moment I was introduced to Kayla Anderson. The girl is huge. Muscles in all the right places with the strength to take anyone who stands in her way. She has the height of a giant towering over me and also obtains the power to destroy her victims in a blink of an eye.
But right now, she’s not so tough. Right now she is not dominating anything. Right now, her strength and power are useless. Right now I’m in control. I’m the one who has her on the wall begging for mercy. Right now, she’s nothing.
“You can say anything you want about me, but mess with my parents one more time and next time I won’t be considerate as to let you go.” The room is quiet except for Kayla’s heavy breathing. I let go of her arm and back up not wanting anymore trouble.
Kayla punches the wall with both her fists and then turns around to glares at me with all her might. The girls in the cafeteria back up when they see Kayla approaching me with her fist ready to do some damaged. She swings her massive fists aiming for my face. Ducking out of the way only causes Kayla to swing faster and even more aggressively then before.
“Ladies, ladies, I suggest you stop this or-“
I’ve hated Kelly since I met her a week ago. She has made my life a living hell. Cleaning the bathrooms, scrubbing the floors, kitchen duty, anything that requires physical labor, she has put me on duty even on after hours. So when seeing her on the ground holding her face in pain, a grin spreads across my face. Kayla stops mid swing and looks down on the injured Kelly.
“Oh my God, Kelly I didn’t mean to- I’m so sorry.” Kayla bent down to help Kelly, but Kelly pushed her away and glared at me.
“You-” Kelly says pointing her index finger at me as she walked closer. “If you thought your life was a living hell before, then you-” Her eyes and every expression was filled with rage. I had it coming, and yet this was so not my fault.
Before Kelly could finish her threat, the director came in silencing her immediately. Kelly’s eyes were wide with fear probably asking herself if he heard her.
“What is going on here Kelly?” He asks turning from me to Kayla and then back to the nervous Kelly. A grin threatened to appear on her face when the direction did not say a word.
‘Lucky bitch’ you took the words right out of my mind.
“There was a fight in which Alexandria had Kayla pinned against the wall and punched me when trying to stop her.”
This caused the old man to raise his eyebrows in amazement. He looked at Kayla who was now glaring at me again.
“Alexandria come with me please.” words have great power, these specific words coming from the boss of this place are never good and truly scare the living daylights out of me. He turned around and walked to out the cafeteria with everyone’s eyes following him.
Kelly grabbed my arm and positioned herself close to my ear. “If you dare say anything I swear-” She hid behind a smile as she talked and looked around to see if anyone could hear her. I stopped her mid sentence and smiled not wanting her to finish.
“The boss awaits. You wouldn’t want to make him angry now do you?” A small victory is won when Kelly lets go of my arm and tells me to go. Both Kayla and Kelly glare at me as I walk out the cafeteria door.
‘Two enemies for the price of one, nice going.’ you know what? I’m so sick of you and your stupid sarcasm.
“Alex what exactly happened down there.” Brian O’Connor is not a man who goes around the bush. He goes straight to the point with no warning what so ever. He sits in his chair and follows me with his dark eyes as I sit in one of the chairs.
“Mr. O’Connor I…” He has been protecting me ever since I got in this prison. The old man has almost become a friend. But what do I tell him? He can’t know the truth because then he’ll start asking questions about them, about my parents.
“you know what? How about I just give you detention for three days and leave it at that.” Brian smiles at me as I nod my head at the proposition. I like detention. The room is quiet and has a window in which you can see the city. If you look closely enough you can see the building where Mike works.
Despite myself I can’t help but wonder if they miss me or even notice my absence. ‘Don’t do this to yourself.’ I know. Do you think Kylie misses me? ‘I don’t know, but I wish she misses us as much as we do her.’ so you miss her too. ‘yeah.’
“Alex hello are you listening to me?” I shake my head and look at Brian waving his hand in front of me grabbing my attention. He chuckles and motions me to go.
“Alexandria, I got word saying that you will be leaving us in a few days due to good behavior and because you have kept up with your school work. Can’t say I’m happy to hear that, but I can’t keep you here forever.” Brian smiles a sad smile and goes back to his paperwork. I close the door behind me as quietly as possible and head to the detention room where a math test awaits me.
I get to leave. I’m going home. Maybe they still want me. Maybe I can go back to Mike and Rachael. ‘don’t count on it. They probably don’t even want you after all the trouble you’ve caused.’
“Alex nice to see you again. Have a seat and start working on the test. You have one hour to finish it.” She smiles at me knowing I’ll finish it way before that. Unlike her sister, Sandra is kind and a wonderful person. Kelly and Sandra are the complete opposite. They look almost like twins except that Sandra has a positive vibe while Kelly does not.
I nod my head at her and walk to the table to do the test. A pencil is already there as well as a sharpener and an eraser. Taking a seat I pick up the pencil and start problem one.
Taking my time I finish the test in 45 minutes not wanting to finish quickly since I have nothing else to do afterward. Sandra looks up when I lay the test on her desk and frowns. “You don’t have anything else to do, do you?” She asks flipping through the pages and noticing that a put the answers on a separate sheet of paper so she can grade it faster. I shake my head no and head back to the table.
The sun is setting beautifully outside covering the city in an orange and purple light. I smile and cross my arms as I put my feet on the table. This is the reason I purposely get in trouble, I get to see this amazing view.
“Alexandria times up, time to go.” Sandra says touching my shoulder. I turn to her asking for a few more minutes. “Its not over yet.” I say pointing outside. Sandra pulls out the chair and mimics my posture.
“I used to do this every day with Kelly when we were little. We used to sit outside on our lawn and look up at the sunset.” a tear falls as she talks. She wipes it and gets up excusing herself.
“What happened to her. She treats me like shit and yet she treats the others like they are her children. Why am I treated different?” this made Sandra stop at the door and look at me. Tears now fell freely down her face as she stared at me.
“you remind her of her own daughter.” Sandra walks to me and sits back down facing me when seeing my confused face. She then grabs my hands and continues.
“Her name was also Alexandria. You share the same eye color and other similarities. Kelly can’t handle seeing you without it reminding her of her daughter.”
I bring my eyebrows together. Kelly hates me and has made my life miserable because I look like her daughter? What the hell.
“Alexandria died a few months ago in a car crash. Kelly was here working when she got a call saying Alexandria had an accident and was killed. Kelly went ballistic after that call. She couldn’t accept the fact that she was gone, hell we all can’t believe she’s gone. She was starting to get better. Time was healing the wound but then-“
“I showed up.” I say finishing for her. I let go of her hands and lay back on the chair. Sandra looks at me not knowing what to say. “I’ll be leaving in a few days. Mr. O’Connor told me today. Kelly won’t have to suffer anymore, because I’ll be gone. She can move on. Tell her I’m sorry I caused her so much pain.” Sandra was about to say something but then looked behind me and gasped. I turned around and saw Kelly at the door with tears in her eyes.
“Kelly I-” Sandra stood up and tried to talk but Kelly cut her off and cleaned her face.
“I’ll leave.” I say getting up and heading for the door but Kelly puts her hand blocking the door. I look at her and back up not wanting to anything that will upset her even more.
“Why are you sorry?” She asks putting her arm down. Her face is no longer with tears and her expression curious for my answer. “I’ve made your life a nightmare for no good reason and yet you’re the one who’s sorry.”
I look at her in the eyes and see the real Kelly. The one who’s daughter’s death has damaged her. “I know what it’s like to loose someone you love more than life itself. I know the pain of not being able to hear their voice or feel their touch. I know the pain all too well. And if someone were to show up looking like my mother or my father I would probably do the same you did to me, even worst.” I let a single tear escape my eyes and watch as it hits the ground and shatters into tiny droplets.
Kelly then unexpectedly lifts my chin and hugs me. “I’m sorry.” she repeats over and over as she presses our bodies tighter and closer. I hug her back reassuring her that everything is alright.
When she lets me go I get a tissue from the table and give one to Kelly and one to Sandra who was also tearing like crazy.
“like I said, I’ll leave in a few days, so I won’t cause you guys anymore pain.” I try to leave but Kelly grabs my arm once again stopping me from doing so. “I’m truly sorry Alexandria. I was way out of line.”
I smile at her and pat her hand. “Like I said, if someone that looked like either of my parents were to show up out of nowhere I would do the same.” Kelly let’s go of my arm and sees me walk out the door. Closing the door I hear both Sandra and Kelly crying inside, their sobs sounding muffled by the closed door.
I leave and head to bed. I’m not tired, but in this place I don’t ever know what to expect the following day.
Kayla awaits me as I open the door to the room. I walk pass her and head to my hard bed not wanting to deal with her anymore. Kayla not accepting that I won’t pay any attention to her walks with me and steps in front of me. “If you ever do that to me again I swear I’ll make sure you never leave this place.” She threatens.
‘is it me or has there been a lot of swearing today.’ you have not mistaken my friend, there has been too much swearing towards us today. ‘we need to do something about that.’ yeah like what? ‘I’ll let you know when I think of it.’
A punch to the face automatically brings me back. I hold my cheek and cry out in pain. Kayla stands in front of me laughing her ass off. I spit out blood and stand up. Kayla takes off her rings and throws them on a bed near her.
“That will teach you not to mess with me.” Kayla laughs one more time as I spit even more blood out my mouth and clean my lips with my sleeve.
I clench my stomach in pain when Kayla leans forward and punches my stomach. I close my eyes and fall to the ground desperately gasping for air. I can hear her laugh again and feel her foot hit my stomach again. This time I scream and try to protect my body as my ears begin to ring. Kayla uses this opportunity to kick faster and with more force. A piercing scream escapes my lips as one of her kicks breaks a rib.
“Kayla stop!” I scream not wanting to hurt her. I know what I’m capable of. Kayla may not know me well enough since she tried to kick me again. This time I grabbed her foot and pulled it with the little strength I have left. Kayla fell backwards allowing me to finally breathe a little.
“You are so going to pay for that.” Kayla says getting up. I also get up but as slowly as possible. When noting that I can’t fully get up without crying out in pain, Kayla tries to punch me again. I duck avoiding a punch that would surely knock me to the next century. The next punch comes even faster and stronger than the last. I try to avoid it but Kayla uses her other fist and hits me on my side. I suck in some air and back up.
‘Do it.’ no. ‘Alex do it or she’ll kill you.’
Not letting me back down Kayla once again approaches me at full speed. I stand straight not paying any attention to my body screaming in pain. Kayla throws punches my way as I duck and slap her hands away but never throwing punches of my own. This gets her furious so she starts to also use her feet.
“Girls open this door right now!” Brian says. I look at Kayla only to see her grinning.
“They won’t be able to help you now, Mexican.” She says throwing yet another punch. Brian yells even louder as he tries to take down the door. Kayla must have locked it or broken it. The next voice heard is Kelly’s and Sandra’s. Kayla frowns not understanding why Kelly would come to my rescue.
I use this opportunity given and kick Kayla in the stomach enough to cause some pain. She bends holding her stomach and curses. I hold my ribs in place and run like hell for the door. Kayla follows right behind me not wanting to let me escape her. When I’m a few feet away from the door Kayla launches herself at me bring me down to the floor.
She turns me around and starts to punch me. I cover my face not letting her get even one more punch on my face.
‘That’s it! Alex come on! Do something!’
Closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, I grab both of Kayla’s fists and get her off me. I try to crawl my way to the door but Kayla grabs my foot and drags me back to her.
“You don’t think you’re going to get rid of me that easily, do you?” she flips me over and smiles a devious smile. Enough is enough. I use my free leg and push her to the ground. This earns me a few seconds so I use them to run again.
When I touch the doorknob Kayla gets my arm and turns me stopping me again. Her features show exactly how livid she is.
“Let me go!” I scream at her. Kayla just laughs at me. She grabs my other hand and places them both on top of my head. She uses one hand to hold them in place and uses the other to punch my already broken ribs. I suck in some air and close my eyes not wanting to concentrate on the excruciating pain.
‘Alex please, do something!’ fine!
With all my strength I open my eyes and free my hands as i push Kayla back. She quickly recovers and makes her way back to me.
“I’m sorry.” I say letting a deep breath out. When she’s close enough I straighten up get ready. Next I put my weight on my left leg and jump in the air kicking my right foot up. The impact hits Kayla below her chin. I watch as she falls unconscious to the floor.
‘Don’t worry she’s alive. You didn’t use enough strength to kill her. She’ll wake up soon enough.’
I hold myself together and limp to the door. I turn the knob but it won’t budge. Backing up I take another breath and kick the door open. When I leave the room I fall exhausted into someone’s arms.
“Alex!” Brian’s voice rings in my ears. I try to open my eyes and smile buts it’s all in vain. “I’m fine, check on Kayla. she wouldn’t stop, I’m sorry.” I say my voice low and pained.
The darkness starts to take over as I feel Brian pick me up. He quickly runs down the hallway yelling commands. The last thing I hear is Brian saying to hold on as I let the inviting darkness take me.
