Chapter 25

dani’s pov

“last night, HYBE x Geffen assistant team reached out to me. i-” her voice shook slightly. “i’m being put on hiatus.”

“what?” dani shouted. “they can’t just do that! that’s not even fair, if anything, they should put me on hiatus cause of my dad, you did nothing. manon… you worked SO hard for this. you were scouted for the program… this isn’t fair at all!”

yoonchae was trembling, and her arm gripped manon’s. “manon…” she whispered. “it’s the hybe curse… it’s real…”

the girls turned to yoonchae. “what?”

“there’s a rumor that whenever hybe debuts a six member girl group, one member will always get put on indefinite hiatus. first it was lesserafim with 김가람 (kim garam), then illit with 영서 (youngseo), then newjeans danielle. now it could be us…”

sophia shuddered. her face was buried in manon’s neck, tears leaking out of her eyes. “you won’t be put on hiatus,” she whispered. “i promise.”

megan scoffed. “so… i know this is all like ‘oh no manon’s on hiatus’ but who cares? like genuinely this is so cringe.” she got out of her seat and left.

lara winced. “god, i’m an idiot, right? i should have just asked yoonchae to fake date me. dani… i’m sorry.”

dani shrugged. “it’s fine. thanks though, larz. otherwise i’d have fallen further.”

manon and dani exchanged a sad look.

“no,” sophia decided. “this is absolutely not fucking okay.”

“soph– it’s okay–”

“no. i’m not talking about the bullshit that happened between you, lara, and megan last night. i’m talking about how my girlfriend is being put on fucking hiatus.” 

sophia had the fire in her eyes that she only had when she messed up on stage. she grabbed her car keys and stormed to the door. “who’s coming with me?”

dani slipped into her hoodie and joined sophia. “this isn’t right,” she agreed. “let’s fix it.”

sophia’s sleek black sedan zipped through la’s morning traffic, and the car was silent other than muffled honking from outside.

dani wasn’t sure what to say. should she say she was sorry? that manon didn’t deserve this, and that she did instead? but manon had been her rock. her ride-or-die. they’d been roomates since day one, and she trusted manon. really trusted her.

but she didn’t cry. because she had to be strong for sophia. she had to be strong because manon was planning on proposing. she had to be strong because she couldn’t let megan see through her.
