Chapter 18

                             Chapter Eighteen

          ~~~~~ Kylie – Meet My New Friend~~~~
     “Don’t jump!” Kylie screamed to the guy. She slowly walks to the edge hoping the guy won’t do anything drastic. He simply looks at her then turns his back to Kylie once again facing forward.
“Go away.” He tells her swinging his legs while looking down below him.
Kylie walks ever closer wiping her tears away. Every thought of what had happened escaped her mind. When running over to the abandoned warehouse, Kylie never expected to see a man sitting on the edge of the roof deliberating whether to jump or not.
This was her secret place. The warehouse was her home away from home. Apparently she wasn’t the only one who knew about this place.
“Nice view.” Commented Kylie sitting down on the edge as well. She had seen it many times, but of course she was not about to let the guy know.
Kylie looked at the guy closer. His blue button down shirt was dirty. His jeans were ripped but not in a fashionable way. His face was emotionless as he looked down below him with a beer in hand. The guy appeared to be a drunken mess.
“You come here often?” Kylie tried to use a little humor but the guy didn’t even crack a smile. Kylie shook her head at the guy for she was not about to give up that easily. She would make it her job to convince the guy not to jump.
The guy scoffed and took another drink out of the bottle figuring that his time of painfulness was indeed over. A few seconds went by with pure silence while the guy kept drinking his beer and Kylie thought of different things she could do to save the guy.
Car horns could be heard in the distance. A woman was yelling at her husband to hurry up and get out the bathroom in the nearby apartments. Below them was a couple who were fighting and screaming at each other from the top of their lungs. To the right Kylie observed how a bird had been injured and was desperately trying to extend it’s wings and fly away but the injured wing made that impossible.
That was the reason she came to the warehouse in the first place. There was always someone who had it worst. There is always someone hurting more.
“So, do you come here often.” Kylie tried again. This time the guy stopped mid-drink and turned to look at Kylie not fully annoyed but certainly not glad that she was there next to him.
“No, first time actually.” He took one last drink and threw the bottle in the air. Kylie watched as it broke into a million pieces once hitting the pavement while the guy reached to get yet another beer out of the case. Kylie whistled as she brought her body back up.”That is a long way down.”
“Shouldn’t you be in school or something?” The guy asked sick of the company already. He grabbed the beer bottle firmly as he positioned it on the edge of the building so he could hit the top of the bottle and get the tap off. Just as he did so, the tap went on the long journey down to the pavement to join the million pieces of the beer bottle it had been next to in the case.
“Shouldn’t you be working?” Kylie countered. The man laughed dryly and handed Kylie a beer of her own knowing she wasn’t going anywhere for a long time. Kylie was about to deny the drink but the guy’s face told her otherwise.
“So what is a guy like you doing out here drowning 3 cases of beer on top of an abandoned warehouse?” Kylie looked into the distance and pretended to take a sip of the drink but then wished she didn’t once her tastebuds tasted the bitter drink.
The guy looked away not wanting to talk about it. A hint of pain registered in his features for a split second but was gone as soon as he realized he had an audience and composed himself back to the expressionless face Kylie was used to. “I don’t want to talk about it.” He said trying to make his point loud and clear, but as he would find out, Kylie loved a challenge.
“How about this? You tell me what brought you here and I’ll tell you what brought me. Then we’ll see who has it worst.” Kylie holds out the beer bottle waiting for the guy to close the deal. A loud clink is heard as the bottles make contact sealing a deal.
“I lost my job.” He said quietly almost ashamed to be confessing this to a teenager who he didn’t even know afar from her being annoying the hell out of him.
“Welcome to the club.Kylie Kylie laughed happy to know that she was not alone but mentioned for him to continue.
“My girlfriend cheated on me.”
“So did my boyfriend boo hoo.” Kylie said mockingly.
The guy creases his eyebrows together getting serious. Who was this girl to mock his life. She had no right.
“My mom threw me out the house.” He said thinking he finally got the upper hand and win whatever sick game they were playing.
“Sorry buddy, I have a drunken father who hits my mother every time he decided decides to grace us with his presence. I left that place and lookat me now,” Kylie raised her hands and pointed to herlesf in emphasis. She pretended to take another drink finaly able to understand her situation. This time she took to long to spit the liquid back into the bottle and tasted the bitter sweet drink.
“yeah you’re sitting on a rooftop talking to a nobody.” Said the guy laughing at how pathetic that all sounded.
“Yeah well, I rather be here than at home any day.” Kylie stopped to analyze what she had just said and realized it was completely true as she went back to looking down below her. Her brows creased as she begin ot think of anything that would prove her wrong but at the time, she could not think of anything.
“That man that she cheated on me with, was my best friend.” The guy said looking at Kylie smiling. There was no way she could top that off. He had won.
“I’m…gay.” Kylie said taking a long drink. “And before you say “cool” or “that’s awesome”, she doesn’t even know I like her.” Kylie felt the tears coming back to haunt her.
The guy looked up in deep thought. Surely there was something in his life that could top that off.
“Oh my dog died.”
Kylie laughed .”The girl I told you about… she was about to kiss a guy.” Kylie thought back to the scene. “right in front of me.’ She said softly and very slow knowing how much every single word hurt.
“Okay I give up! You’re more miserable, you win.”
“Yes!” Kylie screamed punching the air. She suddenly lost her balance and began to fall forward.
“Whoa there.” The guy says luckily holding onto Kylie stopping her from falling.
“Sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve won anything” Kylie apologizes. She takes another drink slowly getting used to the taste.
“So what now?” She asked out loud more to herself than to him. They looked at each other and shrugged.
“We could you know… talk.” Kylie punched the guy as he looked at her up and down stopping at her breasts. He rubs her arms before laughing and then taking a drink of beer.
The time passed very fast as they spoke about each other’s lives. The conversation got intense as they both shared things they have never told anyone else. None of them noticed the crowd that was forming below them. They didn’t notice the police nor the reporters wanting to be the first to get the scoop.
“Well you know what I found out helps in situations like ours?” The guys asks. Kylie shakes her head no. “Screaming. Screaming at the top of your lungs. Screaming like you mean it.” He puts his drink down besides him and gets up extending his hand to Kylie. Kylie takes and and is helped up by the guy who simply smiles for the first time since they’ve known each other.
A few seconds later the guy is screaming as if he is being killed or has just found out he has been accepted to Harvard. Kylie follows his lead and begins to scream almost instantly feeling better.
“AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!”
Their screams could be heard around the streets of the city. Everything that was stored inside for so long came out in the scream. They both bent backwards getting louder. Closing her eyes, Kylie felt it. The relief. The peace.
“Kylie!”
Kylie opened her eyes and looked down. The guy also stops screaming and looks down below only for his eyes to come upon the reporters. He then looks at Kylie who stares at a certain girl with glossy eyes.
“Is she the one?” The one you were talking about?” He asks sitting back down.
“Yeah, that’s my girl. No wait she’s not mine nor will she ever be.”Kylie looked at Alex one last time before sitting next to her new friend.
Once again the guy watched as Kylie’s eyes began to water.
Kylie sat thinking why she didn’t have the guts to break up with Anthony earlier. She wondered why she couldn’t just grow a pair and revealed her true feeling to the girl and not just some stranger.
“Hey hey now.” It’s okay.” The guy brought Kylie into a tight hug wanting to take all her pain away. They had become close in the little time they had been interacting. They both shred things that were both very personal and very private. They were strangers and yet the best of friends. The fact that their bonding was also joined with a few beers didn’t hurt either.
Kylie calmed down after a while and separated their bodies.
“I think we should get down.” Kylie suggests looking down at the lights and people below them.
“Why are all those people down there?” She asked out loud not fully understating what they were all doing.
“I kind of called my mother to tell her I was going to commit suicide.” The guy scratches his head embarrassed.
“Kylie took this time to truly look at him. She hadn’t really paid that much attention to the fact that he was going to end his life right before she got there.
“Will you?” Will you jump” She asked him not sure of his answer but seriously relieved once he shook his head. Kylie sighted in relief and got off the rooftop extending her hand to help him off too. The guy smiles and bows his head respectfully accepting her help.
Just when he is about to step down, the guy looses his balance causing him to fall backwards. Kylie hold onto his hand with all her strength and might. “God dude you need to loose some serious waight!” Kyle got both hands on the guys arm and tried to pull him up but he did not budge an inch. Since her natural strength was clearly not going to work, Kylie positioned her foot on the wall and once that proved to help a little she put the other leg on the wall and pulled harder.
“Just let go my friend or we’ll both go down.” The guy loosened his grip on Kylie wanting to save her at whatever price.
“No!” Kylie yelled determined not to let her new friend go. He was not going to die for her. Not as long as she had a say in it.
“Come on dude a little help would surely be appreciated right now!” Kylie pulled harder than ever before her breath cutting short and her entire body hurting. The guy nodded and swung himself closer to the wall so he could climb up.
Seconds later they were both laying on the ground breathless and exhausted. “Thank you” He says between breaths.
“Don’t mention it.” Kylie responded trying to control her beating heart. As their bodies begun to heal they got up and descended the stairs getting off the roof and back to safe ground where people were eagerly waiting for them.
Kylie wondered why the police had’nt come up but then remembered that the door was made out of heavy duty metal. The only way to enter was through a way that only Kylie and now the guy knew. Kylie also knew that the only way out was through that same metal door. It did not provide an entrance but it did provide an exit. Kylie went up to the door and began to push it open. The guy soon joined her also pushing the door open.
Camera flashed as well as people indulged them as they stepped out the building into the night. Reporters rushed to ask them questions while the police tried to keep everyone away.
“Kylie!” That same voice came again. Kylie turned around and was almost knocked down when another body collided into hers. Alex hugged the life out of Kylie while she stood there motionless not knowing what to do.
“Never do that again!” The girl once again embraced her tightly closing her airways.
“What are you doing here?” Kylie asked. Not that she wasn’t glad to see the girl, she was always glad to see Alex, but Kylie couldn’t help but ask why she wasn’t with Ismael.
