Chapter 19

“I’m Bowie and she’s Prince”

October 31st

Sofia’s in her bedroom, making sure her costume is in place when her phone starts ringing.

“Hello?” Sofia asks, not expecting any calls.

“Hi, Sofy” Nancy says with a sigh.

“What’s up?” Sofia asks, sitting in bed.

“Look, could you take the boys to the little club reunion today? That is if you don’t have plans-” Nancy says.

“Yeah, I can take them, don’t worry. Is anything wrong?” Sofia asks, sensing some tension in Nancy’s voice.

“Yeah, I’m just having a few problems with the paper” Nancy says, sounding distracted by something.

“Oh… do you need help?” Sofia asks, although she doesn’t feel like writing right now.

“No, thanks though. Well, I gotta go, I’ll tell Mike to be ready by 7” Nancy says quickly.

“Alright, bye!” Sofia says and Nancy hangs up.

Still in her pajamas, Sofia decides to start doing the makeup. She has written down what the makeup should look like from the video clip she saw on MTV.

With her makeup done, she starts doing her hair. She was going to put a wig on, so she had to pull her hair back in a bun.

In the middle of the process, the doorbell rings. “Dusty, door!” Sofia screams from her room. A few seconds later, she hears Dustin’s footsteps and then the door opening.

A moment later, someone knocks on Sofia’s door. “Who is it?” she asks.

“It’s me, dingus” she hears Robin say, and her face instantly lit up.

“Come in!” Sofia says, putting the bobby pins down.

Robin opens the door, gets inside, and closes it. She’s already in her costume: black pants, a classic button-down shirt, a costumed purple overcoat, classic shoes, and a wig (pic of the costumes next).

Sofia smiles at Robin’s costume and walks up to her. She holds Robin’s hands, getting very close to her.

“Hi” Sofia says, quietly.

“Hi” Robin says with the same tone.

Sofia holds Robin’s face and kisses her. Robin moves her hands to Sofia’s waist, pushing her closer to her.

They haven’t told anyone that they’re dating yet. They agreed to only tell Steve and Dustin, since they’re the only people who know about their sexuality. Telling them will take time though.

Sofia pulls Robin way, holding her collar. “I like your costume” she says, out of breath.

“Thanks” Robin says and keeps kissing Sofia.

They slowly move to bed. Sofia sits down and looks up at Robin, holding her by her pants. Robin, who’s looking down, holds Sofia by her hair and starts kissing her.

Sofia slowly leans back, feeling Robin get on top of her. The kisses were now faster, rougher.

She placed her arms around Robin’s waist, as she held Sofia’s face. She moves her lips to Sofia’s cheeks and then to her neck, leaving a trail of small kisses.

“Hey at what- WOAH” Dustin screams, as he opened the door and saw Robin on top of Sofia. He immediately closes the door, feeling his cheeks getting red.

Sofia and Robin look at each other with worry. “Shit” Sofia whispers, as Robin gets off top of her.

She opens her bedroom door as Robin follows her. They find Dustin sitting on the kitchen counter.

“Dusty…” Sofia says, realizing that she doesn’t know what to say.

“Are you two dating?” he asks, not letting escape any emotion.

“Yes” Sofia responds.

Dustin’s lips curl into a big smile. “Finally!” he says.

“So, you’re chill about it?” Sofia asks, needing reassurance.

“Of course! I’ve been rooting for you two for ages” he says, opening the fridge and taking out a can of coke.

Sofia and Robin chuckled and sighed in relief. “Can you just please not tell anyone? Only you and Steve are allowed to know”

“Alright” Dustin says, walking to his room. “Next time put a sock on the door or something!”

Sofia chuckles, holding Robin’s hand. Robin smiles, looking at Sofia, and closing the gap between them with a kiss.

At almost 7pm, Sofia and Robin are ready to go.

“What the hell are your costumes?” Dustin asks, as he sees the two girls in suits and Sofia with a lot of blue eyeshadow.

“I’m Bowie and she’s Prince” Sofia responds.

“No one is going to get it” Dustin says.

They get in the car and Sofia picks up Lucas, and then Mike.

“Hey, Sofia?” Mike asks in the back of the car. The three of them are with their Hellfire Club shirts. They asked Eddie to have a game tonight because they didn’t want to go trick or treating without Will.

“What?” Sofia asks, looking at him through the rearview mirror.

“What’s up with your costumes?” Mike asks.

“Ha! I told you no one would get it” Dustin says immediately after Mike, loudly.

“You made him say that!” Sofia says.

“No, I didn’t!” Dustin says, throwing his hands up in defense.

“Yes, you did!”

“I did not!”

“Oh my god…” Robin says. She turns back and looks at Mike. “I’m Prince and she’s Bowie!”

“Oh… it makes sense now” Lucas mutters.

After dropping the kids at school, Sofia drives to the Halloween party. Even though lots of people will be there, she and Robin wanted to go and judge other people’s costumes. And maybe get free weed.

When they got there, Sofia parked the car in a safe zone, and they walked to the door. It was wide open, and they could see people walking and dancing inside.

There were some people making out on the grass and they could hear people jumping into the pool.

“Remind me, why are we here again?” Robin asks, as they make their way to the door.

“To examine people and study their physical behavior” Sofia says.

“You mean watching drunk people?”

“Exactly. But if you don’t wanna be here we can go…”

“Nah, let’s go” Robin says, softly grabbing Sofia’s hand.

As they get inside, the loud music gets even louder, and they start getting overwhelmed by it. Seeing so many people in such a tiny space made Robin a bit panicky but being next to Sofia made her calm.

They made their way through the crowd, holding hands so they wouldn’t get separated. Suddenly, someone called Sofia’s name.

“Gareth?” Sofia asks, surprised. “Don’t you have Hellfire today?”

“Nah, I got a substitute” he responds, clearly high. Remarkably high.

“What you on?”

“Weed dude! Want some?” he asks, and Sofia shrugs.

“Sure, how much?” she asks. She only had 15 dollars with her. She hasn’t carried a lot of money with her ever since she got mugged.

“For you baby, it’s free” he says, going through his pockets.

“Don’t call me baby again” she says.

“Okay…. There you go… madame” he says, handing her two cigarettes.

“Thank you” she says, putting them in her pocket.

She and Robin quickly get out of the inside and find a place with nobody, just under some trees.

The ground was covered in dead leaves. They sit down, getting used to the difference of sounds.

“It was extremely loud in there” Robin scoffs.

“Right? So overwhelming” Sofia says and Robin agrees. “At least we got this for free”

“Totally… baby” Robin says, mocking Gareth. Sofia laughs as she takes them out. They lit it up and started smoking.

When most of the cigarettes were gone, it started to kick it. They were sitting closely, their legs were touching, but that was it. They were afraid of interlocking fingers and showing affection in public.

“Have you ever noticed that like… earth is the America of the galaxy” Robin says, with a distant voice.

“Oh… totally…” Sofia says, with the same tone. “And mars is the Europe of the galaxy…”

“Yes!” Robin replies with excitement. “And Pluto is the Antarctica of the galaxy…”

“We should be astronomers” Sofia suggests.

“Totally” Robin says.

Sofia notices the music fading out. She pays attention to the music that started playing. “Oh my God…”

“What?” Robin asks, jumping in place.

“They’re playing Abba! Let’s go dance” Sofia suggests, getting up and cleaning the leaves off her butt.

“No, I don’t want to” Robin whimpers.

Sofia extends her hand. “Pleaseeee”

“Alright” Robin says immediately, grabbing Sofia’s hand to get up. They ran to the inside of the house, where crowds of people were dancing.

Sofia and Robin blend in the crowd and start dancing. Mostly just jumping, they couldn’t really dance.

Don’t go wasting your emotion, lay all your love on me

It’s like the lights focused on them. They only had eyes for each other. Robin noticed every movement Sofia made, becoming aware of the way her hands were in sync with the music.

I feel a kind of fear when I don’t have you near-

They weren’t aware of the people around them, and it didn’t matter. They didn’t care if they were making a fool of themselves.

-Unsatisfied, I skip my pride, I beg you dear

Sofia looks at Robin right when the beat drops. She sees her moving her head around at the beat of the song. She notices Robin’s jumping in sync with the beat of the song.

Don’t go sharing your devotion, lay all your love on me

They wanted to kiss so bad. The moment would just be perfect. If they had one kiss, they would feel infinite.

“Follow me” Robin said, walking through the crowd. Sofia started following her. Robin opened a door and Sofia entered before noticing where they were.

“I’m not gonna watch you pee” Sofia says, as Robin closes the bathroom door, making sure no one saw them entering, and locks it.

“Sit” Robin orders, motioning to the washbasin.

Sofia felt her knees getting weak. Robin had a lot of control over her. She jumped into the washbasin as told.

She looks down at Robin as she places her forearms on Sofia’s thighs and looks up.

“Have I told you… that you look very hot?” Robin says in a low voice. Sofia could just melt by her touch and her words.

“You’re basically just saying that Bowie is hot, ya know?”

“Nah, I think it’s you” Robin says, putting her arms around Sofia’s lower back.

Sofia puts her hand on Robin’s head and plays with her hair. She softly pushes Robin by her hair and kisses her.

They start kissing faster, as both start feeling turned on. Robin moves her hands to Sofia’s butt, making her lower her hands to Robin’s neck and warping her arms around it.

Robin suddenly takes Sofia off the counter, making her wrap her legs around Robin’s waist. With Sofia in her arms, she turns around and puts her against the wall, abruptly.

Sofia lets out a quiet moan, not expecting it. She gets out of Robin’s waist and is now standing on the floor.

Sofia trails to Robin’s neck, leaving a trail small kisses and making Robin moan slightly. She sucks her neck a bit.

“That’s gonna leave a mark” Sofia whispers, looking at the hickey forming on Robin’s neck.

They start kissing again until they hear a knock on the door.

“I gotta puck, you prick!” they hear a voice say.

They quickly fix their hair and costumes and run out of the door so the person wouldn’t notice who they were. It was safer.

They walk back to the spot in the garden where they were before and lie down, looking at the sky.

“So many stars” Sofia whispers.

“Don’t count them… you’ll die or something” Robin warns. “Holy shit it’s raining”

“It’s not raining, it’s the sprinklers” Sofia says.

“Oh…” Robin whispers. “Do you think we blended in easy?”

“Sure… I think we’re the most sober people in here”

“Really? Other people much be in shit…” Robin says, playing with Sofia’s hands.

“Holy shit…”

“What?”

“Are you real? I think I saw your hand going through mine…” Sofia says, very slowly.

“Maybe it’s the universe or something…”

Sofia looks at her hand and down at her watch. “Shit, it’s midnight already”

“So?”

“I gotta pick the kids up” Sofia says, quickly getting up. Robin gets up very quickly too but loses balance and falls into Sofia’s arms.

“Hello prince charming” Sofia smiles, as Robin gets on her feet.

“You know, I’m already unsteady enough… being high doesn’t help” Robin says, as they start walking to the car.

When they get to school, Sofia stops the car in front of the boys plus Eddie. Sofia had never really talked to Eddie, maybe once or twice, but since Dustin joined the club, she talked to him a couple of times.

The four of them get up, as Eddie walks to the window, which Robin rolls down.

“I just wanted to make sure they didn’t get kidnaped or something” Eddie says.

“Thanks” Sofia smiles. 

Eddie furrows his eyebrows. “Are you guys high?” he asks, with a small smile forming on his lips.

“Maybe… why” Robin says, trying not to laugh.

“Your eyes are all red” Eddie points out.

“Thanks” Sofia says with a chuckle.

The three enter the car, say goodbye to Eddie and Sofia drives away. For the entire ride Sofia and Robin couldn’t stop laughing. Mike, Lucas and Dustin were definitely confused but didn’t bother to say anything.

After dropping the kids at home, Robin decides to take Sofia’s invitation and sleep over. Sofia parks the car, and they quietly get in. Dustin was half asleep, so he didn’t question Robin’s presence.

They go into Sofia’s bedroom and Robin falls into bed, her face hitting the pillows. The weed was starting to lose effect.

“Rob, you gotta change” Sofia says, feeling sleepy.

“I need sleep” Robin complains.

“Come on” Sofia says, sitting in bed. She starts to take off Robin’s overcoat.

“If you wanna get me naked you could just ask” Robin mumbles, making Sofia blush.

Robin sits down, takes off her coat and starts to unbutton her button-up. Sofia stares at her with wide eyes. She quickly brushes the thoughts away and goes to her drawer to get a shirt.

She can’t help but look Robin up and down as she changed. She’s so beautiful. Sofia also gets her black sweatpants. It all suits her so perfectly.

Then, Sofia changes, feeling Robin’s eyes on her. She lies down next to Robin.

“It was fun” Robin whispers, smiling.

“It was” Sofia smiles.

“Goodnight Sof” Robin mumbles, putting her head on Sofia’s chest and her leg on top of Sofia.

Sofia kisses the top of Robin’s head and holds her hand. “Goodnight love”.

Sofia wanted to stay in that moment forever. It felt so comfortable. It felt like home.

Home. The word which Robin taught her the meaning.
