Chapter 18
Celeste sits tall in her chair, gown still flawless under the heat of the lamps. She exhales slowly, letting Elena slide off her shoulders for just a moment.
Rowan drops into the seat next to her, handing her script to an assistant. She’s calm, but the faint tremor in her hand doesn’t go unnoticed.
Celeste glances over, voice low, casual.
CELESTE
Good job in there.
Rowan looks up, one brow quirking. Then she lets a slow smile slip.
ROWAN
You too. Though… that laugh wasn’t in the script.
Celeste shrugs lightly, lips curving.
CELESTE
Neither was your stare.
A makeup artist leans in, brushing powder across Celeste’s jawline. Another adjusts Rowan’s lip color. For a moment, the silence stretches, broken only by the buzz of crew.
Rowan smirks, eyes flicking to hers in the mirror.
ROWAN
Guess we’re both guilty.
Celeste’s lips twitch, but she doesn’t answer. Instead, she holds her gaze in the reflection, just long enough to feel the weight of it.
The 1st AD strides over, clapping a clipboard.
1ST AD
Scene Two, people! Let’s reset on the ballroom.
Celeste exhales, looking back at her own reflection. Rowan caps her water bottle, rising smoothly. Their eyes meet once more before they head toward the set.
SCENE TWO
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE INTERIOR SET – NIGHT
The terrace doors swing open. ELENA VEGA (Celeste) steps inside first, her tailored black suit catching the low amber glow. She moves like a shadow slipping into place.
ISABELLA “IZZY” MARQUEZ (Rowan) follows, heels soft against the marble. She closes the doors, shutting out the hum of the “party” outside.
A chandelier sways overhead. Silence hums between them.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… action.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
You shouldn’t leave yourself alone out there. Too many eyes.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
(half-smile)
I thought that’s the point of parties—eyes everywhere, watching.
Elena steps closer, her hand brushing the back of a leather chair. She studies Izzy carefully, voice low.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Some eyes are dangerous. Some don’t care who they burn.
Izzy tilts her head, curious, steady.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
And yours?
(beat)
Which kind are yours?
CUT TO: MONITOR
The shot frames them close, shadows cutting sharp lines across their faces. The air between them hums with danger—and something else.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Mine… are practiced. I don’t look without reason.
Izzy takes a step closer. Their distance shrinks to almost nothing.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Then tell me—what reason do you have to be looking at me?
Elena falters. The script calls for a sharp deflection, but Celeste doesn’t deliver it right away. Instead, she hesitates.
ON SET
The crew exchange glances. Script supervisor leans forward.
Finally—
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
(quiet, weighted)
You’re… interesting.
It isn’t the line. Rowan blinks, caught off guard, but leans in.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Interesting can be dangerous.
Her delivery is softer than rehearsed, almost an invitation.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The camera captures a moment that blurs character and actor—Elena and Izzy, Celeste and Rowan.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
(whispering, awed)
Hold… hold…
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Then maybe I like dangerous.
A silence stretches. Both women stand too close, the line hanging in the charged air.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And—cut!
ON SET
The crew exhales, murmurs. Someone laughs nervously. The Director leans back in his chair, rubbing his jaw.
DIRECTOR
(half-grinning)
Well. That wasn’t the script… but I’m not mad at it.
Celeste straightens her jacket, clearing her throat. Rowan hides a smirk, her eyes glinting with something unscripted.
The Director points at both of them.
DIRECTOR (CONT’D)
We’ll keep that take. Reset for Scene Three.
FADE OUT.
SCENE THREE
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE LIBRARY SET – NIGHT
Dim light spills through tall windows painted with moonlight. Bookcases tower around them. A fireplace flickers. The room feels like it’s holding its breath.
The DIRECTOR leans in.
DIRECTOR
Scene Three. Vega corners Izzy in the study. Push and pull—truth and lies. Let it simmer.
(beat)
And… action.
ON SET – LIBRARY
ELENA VEGA (Celeste) closes the heavy door behind her, the click echoing through the silent study. She removes her gloves slowly, deliberate, like shedding armor.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Your family keeps too many secrets in this house.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
(arches a brow)
And you’ve been invited here to uncover them?
Elena steps closer, circling, voice measured.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Invited, no.
(beat, studying her)
Drawn… maybe.
Izzy doesn’t step back. She squares her shoulders, standing her ground.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Drawn to what?
CUT TO: MONITOR
The camera creeps closer, framing their faces in the firelight, every breath between them visible.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
To the only person here who doesn’t seem afraid to look me in the eye.
A flicker in Izzy’s expression—half her line, half Rowan herself.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Careful. Look too long, and you might see something you can’t unsee.
Elena takes another step, closing the space until only inches remain.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Maybe that’s exactly what I want.
ON SET
The script supervisor whispers, flipping pages. That’s not the line.
But Rowan doesn’t break. She leans in, her delivery lower, more intimate.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Then you’re not here as a guest. You’re here as a danger.
Their eyes lock, heavy, almost trembling with what isn’t written.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
(whispering)
Yes… yes… don’t move. Hold it—
The air on set thickens, the line between scene and reality dissolving.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
(whispered, unscripted)
Or maybe I’m here because of you.
Rowan falters, lips parting. For a second, she forgets to answer.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And—cut!
ON SET
The crew breaks into hushed chatter. Someone mutters, “That’s not in the script…”
The DIRECTOR points at Celeste and Rowan, suspicious and impressed.
DIRECTOR
Whatever you two are doing—bottle it. But keep it safe. We’re not making a love story… at least, not yet.
Celeste adjusts her suit jacket, hiding her hands that tremble faintly. Rowan looks down at her script, but the corner of her mouth betrays her with the smallest smile.
FADE OUT.
