Chapter 19
"Myne, you've been working so hard for me," Maya said the next morning, pouring the princess a fresh cup of tea. "I think today, you deserve a break. The Dragon's Rest has a private, luxury spa. I've already paid for a full day of treatments for you—massages, aromatic oils, the works. You should go pamper yourself."
Myne’s eyes widened, shimmering with genuine delight. A free day of ultimate luxury, funded by her seemingly devoted, wealthy pawn? It was a spy's dream come true.
"Oh, Maya-sama! You are far too generous," Myne cooed, reaching across the table to squeeze Maya's hand. "But what will you do? I cannot leave you unprotected."
"I'll just be at the library," Maya lied smoothly, returning the squeeze. "Reading up on basic monster lore. It's completely safe. Go. Relax. I'll join you in the baths this evening."
An hour later, Myne was deeply asleep on a massage table, and Maya was standing in a damp, torch-lit cavern beneath the city's slums.
The underground arena was a cacophony of roaring beasts and shouting gamblers. It was a place where the kingdom's laws didn't reach, run by the black market syndicate. In the center of the cavern was a massive fighting pit, stained dark with old blood.
Maya pulled her hood low and stepped up to the fighting ledger. She slapped down three of her Queen-given gold coins.
"Put me in the pit," Maya told the scarred bookie. "Against whatever you have in the cages that hasn't eaten in a week."
The bookie grinned, revealing missing teeth. "You got a death wish, little lady? Fine by me."
Ten minutes later, the heavy iron gates of the pit groaned open. Maya stepped onto the blood-soaked sand. Across from her, a massive iron cage was unlocked.
A Level 25 Armored Cave Bear lumbered out. It was twice the size of a grizzly, its fur completely covered in thick, naturally occurring stone plating. It let out a deafening roar that shook dust from the cavern ceiling.
The crowd cheered for the girl's impending death. Maya just smiled.
[Equipping: Chimera-Acid Gauntlet]
The silver plates shifted into a sickly, glowing green metal. Maya cracked her neck. She didn't have Myne here to weaken the beast. She had to rely entirely on her own stats, her real-world skills, and the shadow stretching beneath her boots.
The bear charged, the ground shaking with every massive step. It swung a paw the size of a boulder, intending to crush her instantly.
Maya didn't block. She used the incredible Agility boost from her party buff to slide perfectly under the massive swing. As she slipped past the bear's guard, she drove her glowing green fist directly into the thickest part of the beast's stone armor.
HISS.
The Chimera Acid instantly reacted, violently corroding the stone plating, melting it away to expose the vulnerable flesh underneath. The bear roared in confusion and pain, rearing up on its hind legs to crush her.
"Now, Onyx!" Maya commanded softly.
From the dark shadow cast by the rearing bear, a pair of glowing red eyes snapped open. Onyx launched himself upward from the two-dimensional darkness, his jaws opening wide. The shadow wolf's obsidian fangs sank deep into the bear's unprotected, acid-burned flank.
The synergy was flawless. Onyx's raw attack power, boosted by the Cardinal Weapon's bond, dealt massive damage. As the bear thrashed, trying to shake the wolf, Maya seamlessly shifted forms.
[Equipping: Iron Gauntlet]
She pivoted, planting her feet firmly in the sand, and delivered a devastating, momentum-fueled roundhouse kick directly to the bear's knee. The joint gave way with a sickening crunch. As the massive beast toppled forward, Maya drove a brutal, iron-clad uppercut into its jaw, snapping its head back and shattering the rest of its health bar.
The massive bear dissolved into a mountain of digital pixels and high-tier loot.

[Level Up!]
[Level Up!]
[Current Level: 21]
The crowd went dead silent, then erupted into deafening, frantic cheers. The mysterious hooded fighter had just dismantled a boss-tier monster in less than a minute.
Maya scooped up the monster drops, letting Onyx melt seamlessly back into the shadow of her cloak, and walked out of the pit before anyone could ask questions.
That evening, the air in the Dragon's Rest private spa was thick with fragrant, jasmine-scented steam.
Maya, having thoroughly scrubbed the blood and grime of the arena from her body in the antechamber, slipped into the massive, sunken hot spring.
Myne was already there, resting against the smooth stone edge of the pool. Her long, crimson hair was pinned up, though a few wet strands clung to her neck. Her eyes were closed, a look of absolute, pampered bliss on her face.
Maya waded through the hot, soothing water, stopping just behind Myne. She picked up a soft sponge and a bar of expensive, floral soap, and gently began to wash the princess's shoulders.
Myne let out a soft sigh, leaning back into Maya's touch. "Mmm… your hands are magical, Maya-sama. The library must have been so incredibly dull compared to this."
"It was quiet," Maya murmured, her hands moving in smooth, rhythmic circles over Myne's collarbone. "But looking at you now, I definitely prefer the view here."
Maya’s eyes traced the elegant curve of Myne’s neck and the flawless, pale skin of her shoulders. In the privacy of her own mind, behind the calculated facade, Maya allowed herself a moment of total honesty.
I have to admit, Maya thought, her dark eyes entirely focused on the woman in front of her, she is breathtakingly beautiful. The steam, the heat of the water, and the quiet intimacy of the room created a heavy, undeniable tension. Myne was the enemy. She was a manipulative, cruel, and selfish royal spy who had tried to ruin Naofumi's life on day one.
If she actually had a good personality, I probably would have fallen for her by now, Maya admitted to herself, her thumb gently brushing a stray lock of red hair from the nape of Myne's neck. It would be so easy to get lost in this.
Myne shifted slightly, tilting her head back to look at Maya through half-lidded, emerald eyes. There was a dangerous, alluring smirk playing on her lips—the look of a predator who firmly believed she had captured her prey.
Maya met her gaze, a strange thrill sending a shiver down her spine that had nothing to do with the hot water.
But who knows… Maya thought, a dark, hidden smile curving her own lips. It’s actually still good this way. I think I like her wild, toxic personality a little bit. It makes the game so much more interesting. Taming a viper is far more satisfying than petting a dog.
"You're staring, Maya-sama," Myne whispered, a teasing, melodic lilt to her voice.
"I'm just admiring," Maya replied smoothly, letting the sponge drop into the water. She leaned forward slightly, closing the distance between them until they were mere inches apart. "You are truly a work of art, Myne."
Myne’s breath hitched slightly, her trademark vanity completely swept up in the magnetic, almost possessive energy Maya was radiating. For a split second, the master manipulator wasn't entirely sure who was actually holding the leash.
