My name is Lilith Cove and what I am about to tell you might spook you a lot.
My girlfriend is, was, a succubus. As in, a sex demon. Like those you’d find in a book. Only she was not a mythological creature—she was very much real.
But I am getting ahead of myself.
It all started in September of 2009, when my father and I moved to Devil’s Kettle in Minnesota. I know, I know, the name should have raised a red flag, but, instead, it only made me more curious to see what this small, unknown town was all about.
I will admit that initially I was frustrated that we were moving from our lovely home in Malibu to all the way up in Minnesota. I had a wonderful life, one that most teenagers would kill for. But I guess that my parents’ divorce was too harsh on my dad and he was eager to get as far away from mom as he could.
So here we were, in the cold, lonesome, mysterious Devil’s Kettle.
What I remember distinctly is the suspicious looks we got when we first arrived.
Friendly and welcoming as he is, my dad was not let down and he took it upon himself to greet all of our new neighbours the minute we’d settled down.
I remember how jarred he looked when he returned home. He sat down on the couch next to me and gravely told me that there had been a massive killing spree in this town a little less than a year ago. They’d caught the culprit, a girl named Anita Lesnicki, who was currently locked up in an asylum. Apparently, the girl was nuts and rumour had it that she’d even drank her boyfriend’s blood before killing him, as well as attempting to murder her best friend, Jennifer Check, who still attended Devil’s Kettle High School, the school that I was going to.
Needless to say, I was unnerved by the news, but my dad assured me that it was all okay now, that the threat had been extinguished and that the town had not suffered another loss since Anita Lesnicki’s arrest.
I didn’t sleep very well that night, but I confess that I was excited to see if I would bump into Jennifer Check on my first day of school.
What can I say? Horror thrilled me.
If only I knew that this would turn out to be way worse than any thriller I’d ever seen. In fact, it would be its own horror movie…
