Chapter 31
Kyoshi rolled out of bed, not nearly as gracefully as she would have liked, almost falling over when she tries to stand. Rangi squinted at her, before mumbling for 5 more minutes. And she gets mad at me for overworking myself.
The house was so peaceful early in the morning, not that it was ever loud. Hei Ran always keeps a very orderly space.
Before she knew it she was facing the pile of unorganized letters. Kyoshi pulled a chair up to the table and began to read through them all. Making categories of urgency, from most to least.
It felt like the last time she had gotten this many letters, they told her of the towns that were being overrun but the Balanced Nation was what she guessed was the name that the spiritual group had decided on, and all the measures they were taking to get their way. Not very balanced pulling spirits over, and using them as weapons to aid your strength. She thought.
Kyoshi put down one of the papers, informing her of a smaller town being taken over. So many people are paying for my mistake.
As she went to open another, she couldn’t bring herself to tear the seal. What good was she doing reading these if she didn’t have the solution. What good would it do for these people? Sure she could go around reclaiming towns but that seemed like it would be a lot of effort for little results. This Balanced Nation would likely gain more followers if they continued. It would be pointless to try and run around stopping them all, reckless even. I sound like Rangi
Leaving the piles of letters in the room she wandered outside, settling herself in the grass. Maybe someone could have the solution. Having access to the past lives had to have some use right?
Kyoshi tries to think who would be the most helpful, and who she had met. I guess I’ll just be lucky if I can talk to anyone.
The longer she sat there cross legged the more frustrated she became, she wasn’t doing anything. She was so much better at talking with her past lives when it was by accident.
“Oh wow, I’m going to go train more. It would be terrible if I got interrupted” Kyoshi tempted the universe. Worth a shot.
“I can’t even do this right” She mumbled to herself. Taking a breath she attempted to recenter herself trying again. Just let me talk to Kuruk, Yangchen, anyone. Please
“What can I do for you today Kyoshi,” She looked up to see Kuruk infront of her. She instantly felt a little bit more relieved, at least she could still do this.
“What do you know about portals?” Kyoshi blurted out. Kuruk shrugged, “That they cause a lot of problems I guess. Why do you ask?”
“Because I may or may not have restored one of father glowworm’s” Kyoshi admitted, looking down.
“I already knew that” Kuruk replied. Kyoshi felt a small weight in her chest release. Not having to re-explain that part brought her a little comfort.
“Is the spiritual balance really that bad?” Kyoshi asked, secretly hoping that he would decide not to respond, but knew that the issue had caused other problems in both realms. “It’s not the best”
“Great, just great” Kyoshi scoffed as she stood. “What mess haven’t I caused at this point?”
“I don’t think you’re giving yourself enough credit,” Kuruk commented as Kyoshi continued her rant.
“Am I not an absolute disaster of an avatar? I mean I can’t help with politics much, I was barely holding onto my spiritual connection as is. And now I created an extra hole that some dumbass on a power trip is using to exploit bad spirits, adn use them for strength to take over innocent towns”
“For the love of Rava slow down a sec, geez I come and talk to you for like two minutes and you’ve already seemed to have lost the reason I assume you wanted to talk in the first place” Kuruk replied with a sigh.
“Sorry”
Kuruk looked skeptical. “I really am, promise. I’ve just spent all the time after getting out of that cell in the hospital. I have been nothing but a burden to the people around me, I can’t even go a day without having some sort of melt down. Rangi’s had to deal with it all, she says I nearly killed myself over the matter-”
She paused for a moment thinking about what she had said, then she thought of something.
“So do you have a plan then?” He asked noticing the expression on her face.
“I guess, it’s not the best. But it will fix the damage I’ve done”
Now Kuruk was really skeptical. “And what’s that?”
“If I can get Naurkok to fight me, knock him down a couple pegs, enough that he would be so mad that he wouldn’t think straight, and would take me out without another thought” Kyoshi explained, choosing to look at the ground below her.
“You don’t mean that” He tried to call her bluff.
“Those were the conditions of the portal, between Naurkok and I we have to be so weak that the portal is on the verge of collapse. Then it can close. I can give instructions for the others to finish the task after I’m gone”
“You don’t have to throw your life away on something like this” Kuruk replied, mortified at what he was hearing.
“But what if I have too, it might be the only way to make it right. So many people are going to suffer because of me. They are losing their homes, their lives!” Kyoshi yelled.
“I know you will be able to find another way”
Kyoshi sighed. “And if the time comes and I don’t, I know what to do. I couldn’t live on with my life knowing I gave them every tool they needed to succeed. Or know that I was too weak to live up to my own mistakes.”
“Kyoshi”
“Kuruk, that’s just how it’s going to be okay?” She snapped back.
He sighed in defeat taking a seat on the ground, “How’s Rangi doing?”
Kyoshi’s face fell. “It is not just you anymore, this doesn’t have to be the end. It shouldn’t be. Don’t be like me and force yourself to suffer so much all because of one thing that happened under your era” He replied.
“You mean my mistake?” Kyoshi scoffed. “Would it have been a mistake if Rangi was actually a hostage?”
Kyoshi stayed silent as he continued. “You just need the portal weak enough to destroy it” And with that he faded. She pulled at her hair, turning away from where Kuruk previously was squeezing her eyes shut. When did he become mister knowledgeable?
With a sigh she released her hair, knowing Rangi wouldn’t be happy seeing her continue the habit and reached for the ground behind her to sit back and think. Only there was no ground. Kyoshi didn’t remember when she had gotten so close to the turtle duck pond but now she was swimming in it. Sputtering the water from her mouth as she sat up, pulling the wet hair from infront of her face to see her fire bender glaring at her.
“I thought you were joking about drowning in a pond”
“Right on time as always” Kyoshi commented, noting how Rangi always seemed to show up after something like this had happened.
“I was watching from the windows over there, and when you started moving again I figured I came over, then watched you fall into the pond. It is a bit untraditional for a meditation though don’t you think?” Rangi replied.
“I was talking to Kuruk actually”
And just like that the firebender’s expression went blank. “You were talking to your past lives?” She asked.
“Yeah he was the only one I could get into contact with.” Kyoshi explained.
“What did you talk about then?” Rangi asked, but only got silence in response as Kyoshi turned slightly away from her to look at the pond.
“Does it have something to do with last night?” Kyoshi just gave her a blank stare in return. “I wish it wasn’t” She commented quietly at last.
Before Rangi could question it further Jinpa had approached them. “Am I interrupting?”
“No”
“Yes”
“Is there something that you need?” Kyohsi asked, trying to ignore Rangi’s response.
“I need an answer,” Rangi commented, showing more of her short temper.
“It can wait,” Jinpa replied casually, but Kyoshi really didn’t want to talk about the portal right now so she continued to try and push the firebender’s questions back.
“No you came all the way out here, what is it?” She replied, noticing the heat rising into Rangi’s face. This is not going to end well.
“Well I mapped out the site attacks, and they seem to be centering around-“
“No, what were you going to say Kyoshi? The thing I asked you about last night, I know you know. So just tell us.” Rangi demanded. There was no point in dragging this out any longer, she was going to have to tell them the catch of the portal eventually.
“I know how to destroy the portal”
For a moment the anger drained from Rangi’s face. “You found out? How?”
“I always knew actually,” Kyoshi admitted.
“What is it then, if we know how to help the sooner we can fix this” She replied quickly, eager for the response.
“Rangi I’m so sorry” Kyoshi felt her eyes glossing over, as she went to wring out the bottom of her tunic.
“I don’t know why you’re apologizing, you didn’t do anything-“
“I’m linked to the portal, so is Naurkok.” She took in a shallow breath, “The life of that portal relies on us, if we are both in critical enough condition it could be destroyed. If we were both just gone that would probably be the best case, make things the easiest ” Kyoshi explained, Rangi felt her heart shatter.
“No you’re lying” Rangi protested, “Jinpa she’s lying right, you’re fucking lying Kyoshi”
“Rangi I can’t change this, so many people are going to hurt because of what I did. I can’t live with that” Her breathing felt shaky, “If he takes me out, and someone else can deal with him, that would be our best shot”
“And what about me?” Rangi yelled tears spilling from her eyes. She refused to hear the plan that Kyoshi was telling her.
“What about me Kyoshi, and Jinpa, and everyone else who cares about you?” She asked again.
“Rangi I can’t-“
“No your plan fucking sucks, we’re not doing that end of story. So stop pretending giving yourself up like that is even an option.” Rangi exclaimed, pointing a finger into Kyoshi’s chest.
“Please you have to understand, this is all my fault-“
“Then some if it’s mine too isn’t it? I let the guy take the pin, you only opened the portal to protect me. So the way I see it, it’s just as much your fault as mine. Why don’t I just let him take me too-“
“Both of you just shut your mouths for one second” Jinpa intervened. Rangi crossed her arms impatiently waiting for Jinpa’s explanation, while Kyoshi looked as if she would cry no matter what happened next.
“One this isn’t just one person’s fault here, two nobody is going to give themselves up to fix this. No matter how convinced you are otherwise” Jinpa explained, shooting Kyoshi a look.
“So, we’re all going to take a breath and figure this out”
Rangi looked over to Kyoshi who now looked like she was hunching over to one side. This was probably too long for her to stand.
“Let’s just go inside, we’ll start with the map Jinpa made” Rangi instructed as she turned to leave, before spinning back to face Kyoshi. “Do you need any help?” Her eyes stayed focused on the grass. Sure she was mad at her, but she wasn’t heartless.
But Kyoshi just shook her head as she headed back for the house. “I’m going to go change”
As they revised the sites of the attacks it stayed relatively quiet. Kyoshi sat there scribbling something down on scroll, while Rangi was fixated on the maps. How the hell did I end up in the middle of a lover’s quarrel? Jinap found himself thinking. Though it happens rarely, anytime Rangi and Kyoshi disagreed on something and didn’t relove it then and there it was weird.
They generally stopped talking, maybe to prevent from saying something they would regret. It will pass, Jinpa reminded himself. As soon as Kyoshi realizes how precious to Rangi she actually is, and Rangi accepts that Kyoshi does feel like she is to blame for the whole situation, it will pass.
He looked out the window, it was already dark out. Jinpa didn’t recall that much time passing. He supposed that they did accomplish a lot. They had nearly all the initial, and location information they needed. Now all that was left was the actual plan, and that could wait until tomorrow.
“I’m going to head out,” Jinpa stated as he started to gather up some scrolls, one of which Kyoshi was working on. “What was that for?” She yelped, at the sudden removal of the paper. “I’m taking some of these with me so you won’t work through the night.”
“Damn monk” Kyoshi mumbled, he knew her too well now.
“See you all tomorrow” He said with a wave, I know if I leave them to talk it will sort itself out. He pushed the front doors open as he headed out into the courtyard. They just need to talk.
Kyoshi pushed her chair out before slowly standing. Jinpa has taken all of the scrolls with her notes, so she saw no point in continuing. She would probably end up working in circles.
She glanced back at Rangi who, who not so surprisingly, was staring back at her. Kyoshi tried to show her a soft smile.
“When you’re done here can you-” But Kyoshi’s sentence fell short. She couldn’t come up with any reason to ask for Rangi’s attention at the second, she just knew she wanted it.
“I can take a look at the stitches if you’d like. We probably need to make sure they’re not infected” Rangi said simply as she turned to roll the maps she was examining.
Kyoshi couldn’t help but smile, just like that she knew a small part of Rangi had forgiven her. She found it easy to put down the work then as she headed down the hall.
Quickly she heard Rangi at her heels, and before she knew it the firebender was back by her side. Kyoshi hoped that there would never be a day where she would leave that spot.
“It’s just red, maybe a little inflamed but it looks okay” Rangi stated, being careful not to touch the fragile skin as she examined the stitches.
“I think that’s the most boring health report you’ve ever given” Kyoshi laughed to herself. Rangi’s face twisted with confusion. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, it’s just there always seems to be something more wrong, and this just seems so simple,” Kyoshi explained as she sat up.
“You had to get stitches”
Kyoshi only found herself laughing again. “There she is”
“Who?”
“My overprotective girlfriend”
Rangi melted at the statement, her face flushing. “I’m still mad at you, you know” She argued cover her face with one of her hands.
“I think you have every right to be,” Kyoshi replied quietly. “I probably would be”
“Then why would you propose something like that?” Rangi asked, feeling the same emotions from before rising to the top once more.
“Because I’ll do anything to fix what I caused”
“It doesn’t have to cost your life, dummy,” Rangi snapped back. Kyoshi sighed, there was no way she was going to convince her.
Instead of responding Kyoshi simply crawled into bed, feeling the relief of lying down. Rangi didn’t say anything more either as she made her way next to her, tucking herself under Kyoshi’s chin.
“If you don’t outlive me, I promise I’ll take you out in the next life, and everyone after.” Rangi blurted out in the silence. Kyoshi sighed, that sounded good to her. She thought back to what Kuruk had said. It wasn’t just her anymore, Rangi truly was something to live for.
We’ll make another plan, a better one. So Rangi won’t have to go through with her promise.
Rangi listened to the change in Kyoshi’s breathing, letting her know that she was finally asleep. At least one of us is sleeping.
She tried not to turn too much out of fear of waking Kyoshi up. But seriously, what was Kyoshi thinking? Out of all the things she had done over the years, that plan had to be the most reckless.
What was it going to take to prove to her that she was worth it. And what’s going to convince me that she actually means it?
Before Rangi knew it she felt Kyoshi stirring, she wasn’t sure how much sleep she had actually gotten. But nonetheless she decided to get up with Kyoshi and start the day, getting ready beside her.
“We should head out today,” Kyoshi suggested as she tied her sash.
“I guess we could, are you up for that?” Rangi asked, unsure if that was really a good idea.
“Positive, please just for a little walk. I feel stuck, I just want to get out of the house for a bit before I start to feel like a prisoner” She whined.
“And you call me the dramatic one,” Rangi huffed. “But sure, and for the record you are not stripped of your free will. Only when your hobbling into a battlefield while bleeding out”
Kyoshi just shrugged. “That’s fair”
“Come on, lets go” She smiled as she took Rangi’s hand, taking off down the hall.
Rangi let herself be dragged down the hallway. Before noticing something a little odd. “No fans today,” Kyoshi shrugged. “It will be fine, plus I have you to protect me right?”
“Right, of course” Rangi said as she felt her face heat up. Kyoshi had dropped her hand as they left the gates. It made sense, but still hurt all the same. Rangi tried not to focus too hard on it as they began to head through town.
The longer they walked the more Rangi had noticed Kyoshi was slowing down, a clear sign to her that she needed a break that she probably wouldn’t take.
“Let’s just take a second here” Rangi said as she guided Kyoshi to take a break on a bench. “Rangi, I’m fine”
“This is the most you’ve walked in a week, sit” Rangi instructed. Kyoshi only sighed as she sat down on the bench. The truth was that this was a lot for her, but she would never admit it. Not in front of Rangi, that would mean that she was right. But she was just glad to get outside, she had important things to do.
The streets were busier today, Kyoshi had guessed that school had been recently released with all the children flooding the streets. She smiled as she watched them all pass by, when she thought she had herd a familiar gasp.
A little girl was suddenly at her side pulling on her sleeve. “Avatar Kyoshi!” She cheered.
“please be careful-” Rangi tried to say but Kyoshi interrupted her mid sentence. “Rangi it’s fine, she won’t hurt me.” She gave her a smile, as she turned to look back at the girl. Kyoshi was well aware that Rangi was going to be protective, probably forever. But this girl was not going to hurt her, even if she was still recovering.
“I’ll be right back,” Rangi said, excusing herself quickly, heading over to a soldier patrolling the streets, probably asking if they had seen any of the group’s activities in the town.
“We’ve met before haven’t we?” She asked the child. She nodded quickly with a smile. “I’m MaryLynn- wait where are your fans?” She asked suddenly.
“I don’t need them today,” Kyoshi replied, impressed with the girl’s perception.
“Why?”
“I have her to protect me so I’ll be fine.” Kyoshi explained, pointing to Rangi.
“Your husband, no wait, your wife was that right? Because she protects you like Daddy does. I remember from last time” She said proudly.
Kyoshi only laughed, as she looked over to Rangi who was now talking with the soldier patrolling the street. She guestered for the girl to come closer, whispering in her ear. “Not yet”
The girl gave her a confused look. “Can you keep a secret?” She nodded quickly, with stars in her eyes. “Come here”
As soon as the girl was close enough that she was sure that Rangi couldn’t see even if she broke off her conversation she pulled a box out of pocket. Kyoshi let the little girl open it revealing the ring.
“So you are getting married?” She whispered as she looked at the ring. Kyoshi nodded. “Hopefully, she just needs to say yes” She explained as MaryLynn gave her back the ring to tuck away.
“But why wouldn’t she, you’re the Avatar”
She smiled again. “Let’s hope that’s enough I guess”
“What are you two talking about?” Rangi asked, as she rejoined them at the bench. “Oh nothing,” Kyoshi replied simply.
Rangi then looked to the little girl who made a zipping motion with her hand across her lips, as if to seal her secrets. Only giggles escaping. “I think we should get going now if that’s okay. Are your parents around?” Rangi asked, offering Kyoshi a hand up.
“Yeah my mom’s just in the store, but she’s taking forever” She whined.
“Why don’t you go find her, I’m sure you’ll run into us again soon” Kyoshi said looking over to shops. “Okay, but bring your fans next time”
“I’ll try,” Kyoshi said, waving as the little girl ran off.
“What was that about?” Rangi asked as they headed back on their way.
“Oh nothing, she was just hoping to see my fans” Kyoshi tried to cover up.
“You’re such a bad liar”
Kyoshi just shrugged, “You’ll never really know will you?”
“Come on let’s go you dork”
They walked all the way through town and into the woods, not going too deep but far enough that the sounds of the town were minimal. They had found a break in the forest, Rangi flopped down, letting the sun hit her face. “I wish we could just do this everyday,” She said, closing her eyes.
She laid there for a couple of minutes, if only this was the only thing we had to worry about. Finding the right meadow to lay in.
Rangi wasn’t sure how much time had exactly passed. Only that she no longer could pick up the sound of Kyoshi’s breathing.
“Shit” She sat up frantically. “Kyoshi,” She called out. Where could she have gone, was she taken? I had only closed my eyes for what a minute or two? Wait, how long was I closing my eyes?”
“I was getting you these” A voice called from behind her.
She looked up to see a collection of red flowers, and a smiling Kyoshi. “I thought you were taken!” Rangi exclaimed as she stood.
“They’re red.” She replied with a sheepish grin as she pressed them into Rangi’s arms. “As a thank you”
“For what, you almost gave me a heart attack” Rangi asked, taking the flowers.
“For dealing with me”
“It’s not dealing with you if I volunteered” Rangi watched as another smile washed over Kyoshi’s features.
“You know standing here with you, makes me almost forget what a messed I caused”
“You know that’s not true” Rangi tried to argue, worry washing over her. The idea that Kyoshi blamed herself solely for it, and still was probably considering giving herself up for it made her sick.
They stood there for another minute looking up at the sky, since when had they ever had this sort of time? “This makes getting hurt worth it. Getting to spend time like this.” Kyoshi commented as she went to sit. Rangi couldn’t help but notice how Kyoshi winced as she sat on the grass.
“Don’t say that and you shouldn’t just ignore the pain you know”
“Why not? You are” Kyoshi shot back calmly.
Rangi looked shocked, as Kyoshi reached her arm out gesturing for Rangi to sit beside her. “I don’t know what your talking about”
“Yes you do”
Rangi turned her head, refusing to face Kyoshi. “I know you can read me better than anyone, but is it so hard to believe that I read you just as well after all this time? I know when something’s bothering you” Kyoshi replied to her own statement.
“I think I liked it better when you were just rocks for brains” She choked down her sob with a light laugh.
“I assure you I’m still an idiot, so please tell me what’s wrong.” Kyoshi said as she took Rangi’s face in her palms wiping the stray tear.
“I just hate all of this” Rangi cried as a set of tears fell from her eyes.
“I’m sorry, I made a mess of everything. I know you’ve been taking care of me, but this has to have been affecting you too.”
“No that’s not it”
“Then what is it?”
“It sounds so stupid” Rangi scoffed.
“I’m not convinced you could ever do anything stupid, even if you tried.”
“I’m just so afraid of losing you. All the time, it just doesn’t go away. Do you know how scary it is not knowing if you’re coming home, coming back to me. I felt like I was losing my mind”
Kyoshi just looked at Rangi wide eyed. “Look I know it’s a lot…” She trailed on as she stood, running her fingers through her hair.
“I know I’m a lot, I know I’m intense, and probably insane. Everything I’m saying probably doesn’t even matter. And why would it? You have so many more problems to deal with. That much is clear.”
Kyoshi slowly made her way to stand again next to Rangi. “I think it does, I mean I am an idiot. Who always goes in way over my head, but you always pull me out, and that’s why I know I’ll always come back” Kyoshi explained, taking Rangi’s hand.
“You will always be my idiot won’t you” Rangi laughed to herself.
“Want to make it official?” Kyoshi asked as she slowly got to one knee, almost falling in the process.
“If you’re really willing to put up with me and all that I put you through, will you marry me?”
Rangi’s face lit up.
“Damit Kyoshi”
It was Kyoshis who’s eyes now went wide, before squeezing them shut. “You beat me to it” She heard Rangi call, as she opened her eyes to see Rangi with a gold band. She had been carrying it around waiting for the right time, but Kyoshi had apparently beat her.
Kyoshi just laughed. “So I win?”
“I mean you can’t say no now,” Kyoshi said with a smile.
“Why would I?” Rangi laughed, through new happy tears.
“Well you haven’t said yes yet”
Rangi stepped forward as Kyoshi extended the ring outwards. “Of course I’ll marry you”
She pulled Kyoshi’s face towards her as their lips collided. “Officially my idiot” Rangi said between kisses. “That’s perfect”
“I can’t believe you want to marry me” Kyoshi said as they fell into a hug resting her chin on Rangi’s head. “I can’t believe I didn’t ask sooner,” Rangi replied, trying to hug Kyoshi as hard as she dared without hurting her.
“Although…” She paused for a second. “We should tell people even though it happened at the same time I proposed first” Rangi suggested.
“And why’s that, this is the only time I beat you. You can’t just let me have this one. Did you place a bet or something?”
“Well not exactly but some people may or may not know that this was a possibility.” Rangi replied, thinking back to Kirma .
“I guess if I’m marrying you, I’ll marry your ego as well, ” Kyoshi sighed, as they finally separated.
“It’s a package deal” Rangi shot back, rolling her eyes.
“Just one thing”
Rangi tilted her head, waiting for the question.
“How are you going to tell people that you asked first when you still haven’t even asked me yet?” Kyoshi joked.
Rangi raised an eyebrow at the statement, Kyoshi wasn’t wrong. “Fine, Avatar Kyoshi, wheelder of the four elements-” She laughed.
“You are not asking me like that!” Kyoshi interrupted. “Fine” Rangi began again clearing her throat. “Kyoshi, just Kyoshi not just the avatar but the person who I left in the middle of the night with because I had a good feeling that there was something special about you. The person who I swear is hoping to give me a heart attack one of these days, because she has a need to do everything possible to help people. Even if she puts herself at risk.”
Rangi took a breath. “You’re the person who chose me, even when you weren’t even sure I was really there. I promise to choose you every time even after we’re gone. Kyoshi, please marry me”
Kyoshi nodded as she began to cry falling into Rangi’s arms. “Your’s was so much better.” She whined.
“So does that mean we tell people I proposed first?” Rangi asked, Kyoshi looked at her for a second before pulling the forender in for a quick kiss leaving the firebender flustered. “Fine, as long as I’m marrying you its all the same to me”
“You definitely practiced though”
“Maybe I’m just that perfect.” Rangi suggested.
“A perfectionist maybe, that much is clear” Kyoshi replied as she looked at her ring, noticing how it was engraved, hand engraved. “So much of a perfectionist that you didn’t even trust them to engrave the ring so you did it yourself”
Kyoshi looked at it a little closer, taking off the ring to examine the inside of the band, “to my only?” She questioned as she read the engraving aloud.
“I know the Avatar will live a thousand lifetimes, but you will always be the only Kyoshi. No one will ever change that.”
“Okay you definitely rehearsed that part” Kyoshi accused her once more.
“I will not confirm nor deny” Rangi stated, crossing her arms.
“So how are we gonna tell people?” Kyoshi found herself asking, as she slid her ring back on.
“Oh I already told Kirma, I mean she was there when I decided so…” Rangi rambled.
“Well then I don’t think we really have anything to worry about, they all probably know by now then”
“Always a gossip” Rangi joked, with a laugh.
“I feel like we’re not that much better,” Kyoshi replied.
“Still, she’s probably told everyone by now” Rangi shrugged.
“They’re probably just waiting for the news,” Kyoshi said as Rangi took her hand.
“I guess we can put them out of their misery then”
