Chapter 33
dani didn’t even realize she was shifting forward until the moment they collided.
it wasn’t dramatic. it wasn’t planned. it was just the kind of accident that happens when two people exist in the same gravity for too long without acknowledging it. her shoulder hit megan’s, soft but enough to jolt both of them out of whatever fragile silence they’d been standing in.
and suddenly everything went still.
megan froze first, like her body didn’t know how to process the contact before her mind caught up. her breath hitched, her fingers twitching at her sides as if she wanted to reach out and hold onto the moment but didn’t trust herself to. dani stayed exactly where she was, heart thudding against her ribs, her brain screaming at her to step back, to say something, to do something—but her body felt like it had turned to glass, too fragile to move without shattering whatever this was.
“i—”
megan’s voice broke before the word even finished forming, like it got caught on the weight of everything she hadn’t said. she took a half-step back, just enough to create space between them, but not enough to break the pull entirely. her eyes were already shining, that glassy, unsteady kind of wetness that meant she was trying not to fall apart but losing the fight piece by piece. “i’m sorry,” she said, too quickly, like the words were chasing each other out of her throat. “i’m sorry, i’m sorry, i’m sorry, dani please…”
each repetition came softer than the last, like her voice was running out of strength to carry them. her shoulders trembled slightly, her gaze flicking over dani’s face like she was searching for something she wasn’t sure she deserved to find.
dani didn’t respond. not because she didn’t want to. because she couldn’t.
her mouth felt sealed shut, her lungs tight, like everything inside her had been caught mid-motion and frozen there. the apology hit her harder than anything else could have, because it wasn’t defensive, wasn’t angry, wasn’t distant. it was just… real. raw in a way that made her chest ache in a place she hadn’t touched in a long time.
megan dragged in a shaky breath, her voice dropping into something smaller, quieter, more broken.
“i thought you’d say something,” she admitted, barely above a whisper. “i thought you’d fight it, or tell me i was wrong, or—anything.” her lips pressed together for a second, like she was trying to hold herself together, but it didn’t work. “i didn’t think you’d just… disappear like that.”
her eyes finally met dani’s again, and whatever control she had left slipped further.
“i didn’t want you to go.”
the words came out softer than the rest, stripped of everything except honesty. it landed heavy in the space between them, like something neither of them knew how to carry.
dani’s fingers curled slightly at her sides, a small, almost imperceptible movement that gave away just how much she was holding back. her chest felt tight, her throat even tighter, like she was trying to swallow something too big to fit.
megan shook her head faintly, tears slipping free now, tracking quietly down her cheeks.
“i was stupid,” she whispered. “i thought if i didn’t say anything, if i just let things be the way they were, it would stay that way.”
a breath.
“but it didn’t.”
her voice cracked on the last word.
she took a step closer again, slower this time, like she was approaching something fragile. something she wasn’t sure she deserved to touch. her hand lifted slightly, hovering near dani’s arm but not quite making contact, like she was asking without words if she was allowed to be there at all.
then crashed her lips into dani’s. it didn’t land clean at first. it was messy, uncertain, like both of them were still figuring out how to exist in the same breath. but there was intention in it too, a kind of quiet urgency that made it impossible to mistake for anything accidental. megan’s hands hovered for a split second longer before one finally settled lightly at dani’s waist, as if asking for permission even in the middle of the kiss.
dani didn’t pull away.
that alone changed everything.
the tension that had been coiled tight between them didn’t snap, it unraveled, thread by thread, until there was nothing left but this fragile closeness. megan exhaled against her lips, the sound barely there, like she’d been holding her breath for too long and finally let it go. her grip steadied, not pulling, just anchoring herself there like she was afraid that if she let go, the moment would dissolve into something she couldn’t reach again.
dani’s hands, which had been frozen at her sides, moved slowly, hesitantly, until one came up to rest against megan’s arm. not pushing her away. not pulling her closer. just there, like she was testing whether this was real or something she was about to wake up from.
the kiss deepened, not with force, but with a kind of quiet certainty that neither of them could fully explain. it wasn’t perfect. it wasn’t neat. but it was honest in a way that made everything else feel smaller by comparison. when they finally broke apart, it wasn’t abrupt. it was soft, reluctant, like neither of them wanted to be the one to step back first. their foreheads hovered close for a second, almost touching, breaths tangled together in the space they’d just left behind.
megan’s voice came out shaky, but lighter than before. “i meant that,” she whispered, eyes searching dani’s face like she was trying to memorize the way she looked right now. “i didn’t want to lose you.”
her thumb brushed faintly against megan’s arm, a small, almost unconscious movement that said more than words could. her eyes flickered, something soft and uncertain lingering there, like she was standing on the edge of saying something she hadn’t been brave enough to say before. ‘
“WOOOOO!!!!! YESSS, LARZ YOU OWE ME FIFTY BUCKS” a shout emerged from behind them. manon. “FIFI, DID YOU SEE THAT?!!! MY SHIP HAS SAILED!”
sophia turned the corner. “manz, what ship? you ship like fifty peo-” her jaw dropped.
dani’s face was pressed into the all-rounder’s neck, and sophia’s hands shook. “no… there’s no way. there’s absolutely no fucking way. duuuuuuuude,” she whined. “now i have to go explain to beck why our all-rounder was making out with our ex-main dancer. i’m so cooked… but megs? i’m glad you fixed it and ended things with adri. i’m proud of you.” sophia cracked a small smile, and dragged manon with her.
“you can come suffer with me, love,” she declared.
“DANI SAVE ME” manon hollered as sophia dragged her away.
