Chapter 84

1979, February 14th, Wednesday Evening.

“Aren’t you going home, Ammy?”

“No, Newt, you know I need to get this done.”

“Are you not attending that family dinner with Sirius?”

“I told him to try and patch things up with Moony — I’ll just come up with an excuse for my parents.”

“Visha could go in your stead.”

“Yeah sure, if you find me someone that looks like Sirius. Besides, she doesn’t get along with them, it’d end horribly.”

“Forgive me, Amaya, but…is something troubling you — you’ve been locked in here for quite some time, I –“

“I’m fine, Newt!”

“You –” Newt hesitated, “– you should not raise your blood pressure, stress is not good for the baby.”

“Good for the baby? Good for the — if I don’t get this done, if — if I don’t fix this Atlas will be dead before she can walk, Newt! This must be — I must –“

Newt rushed forward, the greying man helping the pregnant woman to a seat, crouching down in front of her, examining her condition.

“It can wait — the tests can wait, you need sleep. Sleep will help you go further in the long run.”

“I can’t, I — Newt, please, if I don’t do this I’ll never get to see my little girl grow. We need this to work. I know this isn’t what you signed up for, this was all research, in the beginning, trying to understand the habits of this ancient magic but — I need to make it — otherwise, the magic will –“

“Kalo!” A large feathered being flew into the room, perching himself on a light. “Make Amaya some tea please.” He flew away.

“We really need to get an elf.”

“If we pay them.”

“Naturally,” Amaya stared up the pictures littering the walls. “We’ve been at this for two years, Newt…and I only have a few months before my due date, I — I need to do this…we need to finish this.”

“We’ve come far, you’ve come far. You created Kalo, you brought him back from beyond the veil…that is something Amaya.”

“I have never told you how…”

“I…don’t want to know.”

“Newt you know you can leave, you don’t have to help me.”

“I don’t think my creatures would let me…”

“Lucky me then…”

There was silence for a moment.

“You’ll figure it out, Amaya. For now…take a break, add more to that book your writing while I translate more of those scripts Visha found. These Obscurus are not like anything I have ever seen…I must figure out what they truly are.”

“When you do…let me know. It might help.”
