Chapter 14
The reason why I said yes to this date was to keep my mind distracted from Lucy who’s been on my mind for days now. Also, I really wanted to give Reed a chance but no matter how much I tried to distract myself, I couldn’t get Lucy off my mind. As I wake up every day, it was her who I’m thinking of. As I go to sleep, she’s the one tattooed on my mind. Even in my freaking dreams, she’s always there.
Do I want to stop thinking about her? Maybe, no. I don’t know
Or maybe I was just confused and really liked hanging out with her too. But there’s this happiness I feel whenever I’m with her, and whenever we touch. There’s something there that wasn’t there before.
And yes, I did just quote Beauty And The Beast.
As I woke up this morning, I kept myself busy just to fill my mind with other things than her. Did it work? Not even a bit. I got ready for my date. I took a bath, brushed my teeth, tied my hair in a bun, and got dressed.
I was excited and looking forward to this date. It’s been years since my first relationship, I wasn’t used to dating around and someone actually liking me. When I found out that Reed likes me, my brain stopped working and I kept asking myself, what does he see in me?
Reed arrived around 11 am with a beautiful bouquet of roses. I gladly took it and put it in a vase before leaving my house. The suspense was killing me, still not knowing where he’ll be taking me.
“I’m still curious about where you’re taking me,” I said, fixing my seatbelt.
“You’re gonna love the place!”
“How can you be so sure?”
He shrugged. “Everyone loves that place,”
I faked a gasp. “Are we going to Disneyland?”
“That’s a nice place for a date, but not quite,” He chuckled.
He turned on the stereo and we were bopping along with the music. His music taste wasn’t bad. I actually love RnB. After an hour, we finally arrived at the place that he picked.
“Roller skating.” I got out of the car and scanned the oh so familiar place, squinting my eyes as the sun shone brightly at us.
He walked to the passenger side, locking the car. “I hope you don’t know how to skate,” He smirked.
“Let me guess, so you can catch me?” My eyebrow raised.
His smirk grew wider. “You read my mind.”
“Hate to break it to you but, that’s one of the things I’m good at,” I shrugged.
His smirk faltered. “Really?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be the one to catch you.” I patted his shoulder and went inside, making him trail along.
The familiar place got me all too excited. I always go here twice a month, and I wasn’t even disappointed that Reed picked this. We got our skates and placed our things on our designated locker. So eager to skate, I started without him, skating around the rink, which doesn’t have much people in it.
“I’m guessing you’ve been here a couple of times?” He appeared on my side, wobbling a bit.
I chuckled at his state. “Mhmm. I go here every month with Lexi,”
“No kidding?” I shook my head. “So you’re disappointed that I took you here?” He said with a frown.
I spun around to face him, skating backward. “Not at all. I’m glad you brought me here,” I started to speed up, making sure that I wouldn’t bump on anyone in my way.
“Okay, that’s unfair. I can’t catch up with you,” He skated faster, but I knew better. I sped up, earning a groan from him.
“Keep up, Ivans!” I called out.
“So unfair! I don’t know how to skate that much,” He pouted.
“Why did you even pick this place then? Oh yeah! Because you wanna catch me when I fall, right?” I smirked.
His mouth perked up. “Alright, Stines. Don’t rub it in. Looking back, that’s a dumb thing to say,”
I shrugged. “I think it’s cute.”
“You think so?”
I snorted. “The corniest thing you’ve ever said,”
Reed let out a chuckle, agreeing with what I said. “Come on now, slow down and let me catch up,”
“What’s in it for me?” I narrowed my eyes, trying to flirt. It’s not my forte, but a girl was trying, okay?
His eyes sparkled, looking like he’s about to crack up. However, that also made him skate a little slower, “Are you trying to flirt with me, Amber?”
“Me? No. Pfft,” I lied, turning around and had a grimace on my face. My eyes closed for a while, embracing the embarrassing feeling I’m having at the moment.
“Now, that, I think is cute.”
At last, I stopped moving as I waited for him to catch up. I can’t say anything that will humiliate me and be the reason this date turns horrible. He appeared on my side, grasping my arm to support himself.
“Are you okay now, buddy?” I got a hold of his arm to support him too.
“Definitely. Now that you’re here,” He flashed me a smile that can make anyone melt.
I felt my cheeks flush but then an idea popped into my head. Smiling to myself, I took his hand that’s gripping my arm, ready to shake it off. “In that case-” I removed his hand off my arm, and added, “I’ll let you catch up again!”
“Amber!” I heard him yell from behind me.
“What?”
“Is this your way of flirting?”
“No. It’s my punishment for you picking this place, even if you don’t know how to skate, cause you wanna impress me with your ‘I’ll catch you when you fall.’” I mocked, snorting out loud.
“You’re a mean one!” I smirked at his reply. “You know, at this moment, you remind me of Lucy!”
As I heard the woman’s name, my feet stopped moving, like when someone steps on the break of a car real hard. I expected that he’s gonna sprawl on the floor sooner or later, but what I didn’t expect that it was me who sprawled. I saw Reed to my side, skating as fast as he could toward me. My eyes widened a bit, like he learned to skate when I fell.
Well I didn’t know that me falling could make him learn to skate.
“Aren’t you a clumsy one?” He snickered, slowly getting down to sit on the floor rather than helping me up.
“I thought you were gonna catch me when I fall?” I pouted.
“I can’t catch you when you’re far away from me now, can I? You were doing so well, what made you trip?” His eyebrows were knitted in curiosity. It’s like he knew that something happened but he wasn’t just sure what it was.
What made me trip? The moment you said Lucy’s name and how it sent a warm feeling to my stomach. Yeah. That’s the reason.
“I have no idea. At first I thought Lexi was here. She loves to trip me whenever we’re here,” I pursed my lips.
Reed chuckled. “Alright. Come on, let’s take a break for a while.” He removed his skates, ordering me to do the same or else I might trip again. I was gonna protest that I wouldn’t, but there’s a chance that he might be right.
He helped me get up, feeling pain in my butt, but it was tolerable. As we walked to our table, I was massaging my butt from the embarrassing stunt I did.
More people came as time went by, filling the vacant tables. The place got a little bit warmer than awhile ago, but it’s still cold.
“My sister texted me and she said she’s gonna go here,” Reed said, placing his phone on the table.
“Oh, where is she right now?” I asked.
“She’s also on a date with this girl and she said she’s on the way here.”
We waited for his sister before ordering anything, in case she wanted something too.
A blonde girl was walking up to us. She was wearing a black leather jacket with matching leather pants and her wavy hair was down, … She reminded me of Sandy from Grease when she had the makeover at the end.
And, not only that…
She reminded me of Lucy when she had blonde hair.
They kinda looked the same, and at first glance, you’ll think that it was her.
And oh god, my situation won’t get any easier.
