Chapter 5

“No, no, it, well, I just didn’t want everybody and their dog knowing, that’s all,” Ayesha grumbled.

“So, how long have you two been…” Barbara whispered, taking a seat across from Liadan and Ayesha.

“Since Halloween,” Liadan said happily, clutching onto Ayesha’s left arm.

“Last Halloween?” Barbara verified.

“No, no, I didn’t even know her last Halloween,” Liadan giggled.

Barbara cocked an eyebrow as she looked from Liadan’s beaming face to Ayesha’s bland face. Then she smiled tightly and picked up her slice of vegetarian pizza.

“Well, Congratulations,” she said.

By the time the clock managed to drag to quitting time, Ayesha had come to accept the situation, such as it was. After all, yes, for this moment, she was in love with the happy, bubbly, affectionate Liadan. All they had was this moment. The previous moment was already gone and the next moment may or may not arrive.

“Happy Halloween,” Ayesha said as they climbed into her car.

“Happy Halloween,” Liadan whooped out loud.

“Happy Halloween,” Ayesha laughed and started her car.

Arriving to her apartment, Ayesha went to her bedroom, Liadan on her heels. Ayesha stripped out of that day’s work attire, putting the blouse into her dry-cleaning bag. Before she could put on a pair of shorts and a tee shirt, Liadan grabbed Ayesha and guided her to the bed.

“I know you want to get started on our supper, but there’s something I been wanting to do ever since Tuesday night,” Liadan said.

She put Ayesha on her bed on her belly. Then, quickly stripping out of her clothes, Liadan scrambled onto the bed and lay on top of Ayesha, her breasts to Ayesha’s shoulder blades, her sprigs of pubic hair tickling Ayesha’s buttocks.

“I love you,” Liadan whispered then softly nipped at Ayesha’s shoulder.

“I love you with all my heart, body, mind and soul,” Liadan whispered and softly nipped at Ayesha’s other shoulder.

“Oomph!” Ayesha complained lightly when Liadan shifted, bringing much of her weight to bear on Ayesha.

“You. You make me so happy,” Liadan whispered as she gently bit along Ayesha’s back.

“You make me happy too,” Ayesha confessed as Liadan nibbled at her back.

“Love, love, love you,” Liadan chanted as she kissed, nibbled and licked every square inch of Ayesha’s back.

Ayesha had never realized how erogenous her back could be. But, as her lover nipped and caressed her back, Ayesha could feel her excitement trickling from her wet folds. Thinking back, she remembered how she had enjoyed Chad’s ‘Special Backrubs’ when they’d been lovers. She remembered a girlfriend applying sunscreen to her back and how she had hoped the soft, gentle rubbing would go on just a little longer…

Spreading Ayesha’s thighs, Liadan knelt between Ayesha’s thighs and gnawed on Ayesha’s buttocks. Then she used her hands to part Ayesha’s buttocks and Ayesha groaned as she felt Liadan’s hot breath against her anus.

“Liadan, you, you ain’t going to…” Ayesha protested then grunted as she felt Liadan’s tongue lapping earnestly at her tightly crinkled rosebud.

Liadan released Ayesha’s left buttock and reached for Ayesha’s sex. Ayesha gasped out loud as Liadan thrust two fingers into her drooling pussy, thumb mashing firmly against Ayesha’s clitoris.

“Oh! I, ack!” Ayesha cried out in orgasm.

Leaving her fingers in Ayesha, Liadan again lay on top of Ayesha, pressing her firmly against her mattress. Ayesha could smell Liadan’s slight tinge of sweat; it had been slightly warm in the work area that day. She could feel Liadan’s breath against her left ear, could feel Liadan’s long hairs tickling her flesh, and could feel Liadan’s smooth flesh against her back.

“I love you, my Ayesha,” Liadan whispered, then gently bit Ayesha’s ear lobe.

“I love you too,” Ayesha whispered, safe and comfortable even as Liadan’s weight pressed heavily against her.

Their romance was not perfect; what romance ever is? In many aspects, Liadan Kelly was immature; she was only eighteen. And, this was her very first true relationship.

Liadan’s parents both denounced the relationship between Liadan and another woman as sinful. Liadan’s mother referred to Ayesha as ‘that n—-r’ and the Reverend Monjuri found several Scriptural references, no matter how vaguely worded that doomed lesbians to the pits of Hell. Liadan earned no points when she asked how many Scriptural references there might be against stealing a married woman from her husband.

Liadan’s father and her two brothers also called Ayesha a ‘little n—-r’ and were not shy about calling Ayesha that to her face. As one form of punishment, Liadan’s father reclaimed Liadan’s car. After all, his was the name on the title, he was the one paying the insurance. Liadan’s disinterested little shrug infuriated him.

Ayesha held the sobbing girl when she returned to their apartment after that last little skirmish with her father. Dipping into her nest egg, Ayesha bought a pre-owned Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and gave Liadan her Smart Car. Liadan immediately dubbed her bright green car ‘the Jellybean’ and wished Ayesha a Happy Halloween.

Family issues aside, Ayesha found living with another woman somewhat challenging. Liadan seemed to have no boundaries and did not acknowledge Ayesha’s boundaries. She thought nothing of barging into the bathroom when Ayesha was in there, no matter what Ayesha was doing. Using Ayesha’s soap, razors, essential oil spray; nothing was off-limits to Liadan Kelly.

“Should have seen that,” Ayesha reminded herself as she refilled the candy dish. “I’ve had maybe three, four peanut butter cups out of this thing? And here I am, having to fill it up again?”

And her annoying habit of greeting Ayesha every morning with soft, loving kisses and ‘Happy Halloween!’ was no longer cute. It was annoying. December 25th was not Halloween, damn it. December 25th was Christmas.

And, of course, Liadan already knew what Ayesha had bought for her for Christmas; she had ransacked the apartment until she found the gaily wrapped presents. Ayesha vowed, next year, if she did not kill Liadan Kelly before then, she would hide everything at a co-worker’s home. She couldn’t hide it at her mother’s apartment. Either her mother or her two sisters would take the gifts for themselves. Or her two brothers would steal them for one of their baby mommas.

And when Liadan had her little visitor she truly did turn any day into a nightmarish Halloween. Ayesha demanded the girl make an appointment with Dr. Ellen Sweethman; Liadan’s symptoms were extreme. Even with medication, Liadan was frightening when it was that time of the month.

Liadan swept into the room, elegant white wedding dress with full skirt highlighting her beauty. Right behind her, dressed in a tuxedo, a beaming Ayesha entered.

“Look! Look! Happy Halloween!” Liadan insisted, showing Yvette her simple engagement ring.

“Yvette did make the appropriate noises, congratulating both women on their engagement. Tearing her eyes from the couple, the receptionist greeted Wendy Wilson as the dour woman entered the lobby.

“Oh God. Is it, it is, isn’t it? It is Halloween,” the HR manager grumbled.

“Every day is Halloween,” Liadan cheerfully announced as she swept down the hall, Ayesha in tow.

And at lunchtime, Liadan and Ayesha sent notices to Martin Boyd and Wendy Wilson that they may be a few minutes late returning from lunch. Yvette bade them a good lunch, smiling as Liadan excitedly proclaimed ‘Happy Halloween!’ just before exiting the building.

Apparently, they were not the only people planning a Halloween wedding; there were twelve couples ahead of them at the St. Elizabeth Parish Courthouse. And, they were not the only same sex couple; an older man and his much younger boyfriend waited in line three couples ahead of them.

“Happy Halloween, Sweetheart,” Liadan whispered, leaning her head on Ayesha’s shoulder.

“Happy Halloween,” Ayesha agreed, softly kissing her beloved on the side of her head.

Their wedding feast was a quick meal at the Chinese buffet. After all; this was where they’d eaten their first Halloween meal together.

The Friday after Halloween, Ayesha drove them to the St. Ann Municipal Airport and they boarded a Cavalier Airlines jet for their eight day honeymoon on King Philip IV Island in the Avignon Island Group.

“Eight days!” Liadan whispered excitedly as the flight attendant went through the safety spiel. “Eight whole days of sun and fun and no clothes!”

“Uh huh,” Ayesha laughed. “Hope you packed plenty of sun screen!”

“Don’t worry, Mrs. McMann; it’s all under control,” Liadan assured Ayesha.

If you asked Ayesha what the highlight of their honeymoon had been, she would name nude snorkeling around the crystal clear waters of the French Caribbean as her second favorite. Her absolute favorite was experiencing everything through the delighted eyes of her bride. Nothing was mundane, ordinary to Liadan. Everything, everything was an adventure and everything must be savored.

Liadan would have agreed, nude snorkeling had been thrilling, exciting, even a little scary when they saw two large sharks nearby. Their snorkeling instructor assured them, the sharks they’d seen were not man-eaters, though. But her absolute favorite part had been the nude moonlit strolls on the warm sands, the sounds of the ocean, the unbelievable view of the millions of stars overhead, and her wife’s loving embrace.

“Happy Halloween,” Liadan whispered the morning of their last day on the island.

“Happy Halloween and happy honeymoon,” Ayesha agreed. “Well, Mrs. McMann, ready to go home?”

“Ready to start my diet; I know I’ve gained at least a hundred pounds,” Liadan exaggerated.

“Oh? Then maybe you’ll leave them peanut butter cups alone?” Ayesha teased.

“Those? Oh no, those? Those are zero calories,” Liadan assured her wife.

“And on Monday? We’re meeting with Tammy Hale,” Ayesha casually mentioned as they waited to board the Cavalier Airline jet.

“Why we meeting with who? Tammy…” Liadan asked, taking one last look at Avignon.

“She’s a real estate agent,” Ayesha smiled.

“Real estate…” Liadan mused as they climbed the steps of the airplane. “Real… As in, a house?”

“As in a house,” Ayesha agreed, entering the airplane.

“Happy Halloween!” Liadan whooped, garnering the mixed race couple some odd looks from fellow passengers and crew.

“Happy Halloween, Sweetheart,” Ayesha agreed, softly kissing Liadan on her lips.
