Chapter 10
The atmosphere inside the Crypto.com Arena was electric as the Indiana Fever celebrated their 109-100 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. The energy of the crowd still lingered in the air, and Caitlin Clark stood on the court, scanning her surroundings. She was searching for one particular player-her former college rival and friend, Cameron Brink.
Her eyes darted across the court until she finally spotted Cameron sitting on the bench, engaged in conversation with her teammate, Rickea Jackson. Without hesitation, Caitlin made her way toward them. As she approached, she called out, “Yo Cameron, how’s the knee?”
Cameron looked up and immediately broke into a wide smile. “Oh my god, Caitlin! It’s so good to see you!” She stood up and pulled Caitlin into a tight hug.
As they broke apart, Cameron grinned. “The knee’s fine, Clark. But damn, you were on fire tonight. Good game!”
Caitlin laughed, shaking her head. “Don’t flatter me too much, Brink, or else I’ll be redder than a tomato.”
Over Cameron’s shoulder, Caitlin saw Rickea watching them with an amused expression. She waved at her. “What’s up, Jackson? You played great out there.”
Rickea smiled and nodded. “Thanks, Caitlin. And Cam’s right, you were unstoppable tonight.”
Caitlin’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Aww, stop it. Y’all are gonna make me get an ego.”
“It’s the truth,” Cameron and Rickea said in unison, sharing a knowing glance.
Rickea excused herself to talk to some of her other teammates, leaving Caitlin and Cameron alone on the bench. They sat down, catching up on life and reminiscing about their college days. After a while, Caitlin grinned and said “Congrats on your engagement, Cam. I wish you a lifetime of happiness.”
Cameron beamed. “Awww, Cait, that means so much.”
After a brief pause, Caitlin took a deep breath, ready to ask the question that had been nagging at her.
“So, Cam, can I ask you something?”
“Sure, Caity. What’s up?”
Caitlin hesitated for a second before speaking. “Do you know a Sienna Callaway?”
Cameron’s eyes widened in surprise. “Sienna Callaway? As in Sienna from Stanford? Help me understand, Clark, because I only know one Sienna Callaway, and she went to Stanford. She’s a journalist for ESPN now. That’s the last I remember. I haven’t seen her since graduation. Wait… how do you know her?”
Caitlin blinked, rubbing the back of her neck nervously. “Well, Cam, you see… she did an interview with me before our game against the Connecticut Sun.”
Cameron’s eyebrow shot up. “Wait, wait, hold up. That’s not just it, is it?”
Caitlin nodded slowly, feeling her pulse quicken.
“Well? Don’t leave me hanging, Caity. Tell me the whole story. I’m really curious right now.”
Caitlin exhaled and launched into the full story of how she met Sienna, recounting every detail she had previously shared with Kate, Gabbie, and Jada. When she finished, Cameron sat there, jaw slightly agape, processing everything.
Then, suddenly, Cameron’s lips curled into a wicked grin. Caitlin furrowed her brows in confusion. “Why are you looking at me like that, Brink? Is there something on my face?”
Cameron giggled and wiggled her eyebrows. “Sooo… the Caitlin Clark has a crush on a sports journalist-aka my college bestie, Sienna Callaway.”
Caitlin scoffed. “What? No! I don’t have a crush on Sienna.”
“Uh-huh. If you say so, Caity Boo,” Cameron teased, feigning indifference.
Her expression then turned serious. “You do know she has a boyfriend, right? And he’s, like, some kind of millionaire now? His name’s Joseph, I think.”
Caitlin frowned slightly. “How did Sienna meet her boyfriend?”
Cameron sighed, reminiscing. “It was during a basketball game against Duke-Stanford versus Duke. It was the men’s team. I had been bored and decided to drag Sienna along because she had never been to a game before. We were grabbing snacks when someone bumped into her. We looked up, and there was this ridiculously good-looking guy. He smiled at her, and Sienna tried to apologize, but he was all sweet about it. He asked for her number so they could hang out sometime, and she gave it to him. Then he winked, and she giggled. That was the first time I’d ever seen Sienna have a crush on a guy. I always thought she was into girls. Next thing I knew, they were dating.”
Caitlin absorbed the information, her mind racing. Before she could respond, she heard Lexie’s voice calling from across the court. “Hey, Caitlin! We gotta go! Flight leaves in an hour.”
Caitlin sighed and stood up. “Yeah, I’ll be there in a sec!” She turned back to Cameron and pulled her into another hug. “Thanks for talking, Brink. I’ll see you at the next game.”
As she walked away, she heard Cameron call out, “Hey, Clark, by the way… I think Joseph’s gay. Just a feeling. So, you still have a chance with Sienna.”
Caitlin turned back, smirking. “Thanks, Cam.”
And with everything she had just learned about Sienna Callaway, Caitlin couldn’t wait to make a move on her Sunshine.
