“And would you like to upgrade to the Mega-Pass?” the chipper young red head asked, finger poised to strike the corresponding key on her keyboard.

“The what?” Tia Manaken asked; the speaker made the young woman’s voice hard to understand.

The woman was seated inside of a glass enclosure; Tia was sure it was bullet-proof. She was speaking into her headset microphone but the speaker was garbled and the sounds of the 10,000 Lakes Amusement Park all around them made it very difficult to understand her.

The park employee explained that the Mega-Pass upgrade was only fifty dollars more and came with a free meal at any of the park’s six restaurants, got you to the head of the line; you did not have to wait in line for any of the rides, and you could see all four of the park’s stage productions and the two movies.

Tia’s Aunt Emily had insisted that Tia get out of the house, get some fresh air and exercise. It was the last few days of summer before college; Tia needed to do something, anything other than sitting around reading books all day.

Her cousin Viola Pennerlin and Viola’s best friend Thea were going to the 10,000 Lakes Amusement Park and Aunt Emily insisted that Tia join them. Tia did not miss the annoyed look that her cousin shot her. But Aunt Emily insisted, pressing two rumpled twenty dollar bills into Tia’s hand. Tia was sure her mother would have to repay Aunt Emily for the forty dollars; Aunt Emily was not known for her generosity.

Tia would have been happy just lying in the hammock in the back yard; she had a few good books she could read. She was only a few chapters into ‘Steamboat Paddle Girl,’ a ‘steampunk’ novel about a young eighteen year old girl that sees steamboats traversing the Missouri River and invents a ‘spanking machine’ that she uses on herself, giving herself a most deliciously reddened posterior. The next chapter was entitled ‘The Moving Dildo’ and Tia was sure that Zelda, the heroine of the novel had plans to invent a steam-driven phallic device.

“No, thank you,” Tia said, shaking her blonde head.

“Yeah, Aunt Emily; what am I supposed to eat with?” Tia asked herself as she entered the park when the red headed employee electronically released the gate.

Suddenly, the four foot, eight inch tall girl was slammed to the asphalt. She found out after the fact that when the employee released the gate, two teenaged boys had rushed the now open gate, hoping to get entry into the park for free. They were sure they could get lost in the hundreds of acres of the park, disappear without being discovered.

Unfortunately for them, a park employee had happened to be walking by at that very moment. With ease, she swept the feet out from both young hooligans and quickly zip-tied the left ankle of Suspect A to the right ankle of Suspect B. She spoke into the microphone of her headset and two security guards bustled over.

“Oh Sweetie, you okay?” the employee then asked Tia, who had just recovered enough wind to begin wailing.

“I didn’t even want to come here,” Tia wailed, more frightened than hurt.

After verifying that Tia was not physically harmed, the park employee had Tia’s entrance fee refunded and had the red head issue a Mega-Pass wristband for Tia. Again, the beautiful blonde woman made sure that Tia was not hurt before attaching the 10,000 Lakes Mega-Pass wristband to Tia’s slim wrist. The employee then told Tia to have fun.

First, Tia decided to get a shaved ice treat; even at ten in the morning the park was already quite warm. After all, she now had Aunt Emily’s money to spend on food.

“Um, a small bubble gum,” she said to the young man behind the counter.

“A uh, a small? With the Mega pass, you get a medium,” the young man disclosed.

“Oh! Oh, well then, a medium,” Tia smiled.

“Bubble gum, huh?” the blonde employee smiled as Tia sat in one of the benches to enjoy her treat. “That’s my favorite too.”

“Yeah,” Tia agreed, stuffing another spoonful of the sticky sweet cold treat into her button mouth.

A hank of her knee length whitish blonde hair fell in front of her startling light blue eyes. Tia brushed the offending hank of hair back and smiled up at the very pretty employee. The employee smiled a little wider before responding to something in her headset. Tia watched as the five foot six inch woman strode away with purpose.

“Oh, roller coaster!” Tia said, dropping her empty cup into the trash barrel.

“Kid, what? What are you doing?” a young boy asked as Tia got into the very long queue for the roller coaster.

“Huh? I, I’m getting in line,” Tia answered, offended at being called ‘Kid’ by a young boy.

“That’s a Mega-Pass,” the kid responded, pointing to the plastic wristband Tia wore. “You just go right up to the front right there.”

“Oh!” Tia said, seeing two other people standing next to the gate for the roller coaster.

Suddenly, the eighteen year old girl was not offended by being called ‘Kid’ since the twelve year old boy had helped her. With a giggle of happiness, she sprinted to where the male park employee stood. The young man nodded as Tia held up her left arm to show him the Mega-Pass.

“Worth every penny, eh?” a young man said, smiling at Tia.

“Yeah,” Tia said, not bothering to tell him she’d acquired hers for free.

“We’re on our Honeymoon!” the young woman shrilled, looking up at the young man with adoring eyes.

“Oh wow! Congratulations!” Tia said.

Tia was a little aggravated that the park employee made her stand next to the sign that said she had to be a certain height to ride the ride. By a few inches, she cleared and was allowed to board the roller coaster.

She caught sight of her cousin and her cousin’s friend when she bypassed the long line for the next roller coaster. She was not surprised to see them with Viola’s boyfriend, a preening posturing buffoon that she and her mother and Aunt Emily strongly disliked. There was another boy that was standing with his arm around Thea’s thick middle, trying to act cool and manly. Tia did not even greet the quartet as she approached the employee.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m tall enough,” Tia groused but stood next to the display.

“Need to CYA,” the man smiled and moved the gate aside for her.

Tia saw her blonde friend when she joined a long line in front of the women’s restroom. The woman spoke into her headset as she marched into the bathroom to find out why there was a long line.

“Come on, Sweetie,” the employee hissed to Tia. “There’s an overflowing toilet in there. Believe me, you do not want to go in there right now.”

“Then where?” Tia asked as the employee strode away with purpose.

“Employee’s Lounge,” the woman said, approaching a side gate.

“This comes with the Mega-Pass?” Tia asked and the young woman laughed.

“No. It comes with having me for a friend,” the woman said, punching a code into a door.

The employees’ lounge was exactly that; a lounge. It was a place where the park’s female employees could relax for a few moments out of the brutal Minnesota summer sun and heat. There were spacious stalls with clean toilets, sinks that did not have grime and soap scum and other residue caked on them. There were two padded stools and a counter where employees could refresh their makeup. There were even three softly padded chaise lounges in a curtained off area for the employees to relax for a few moments.

Even the toilet paper was soft; not the industrial paper products the park’s guest restrooms stocked. Tia sighed with relief as she used the comfortable, clean facilities.

“Better?” the employee smiled, applying some more sunblock to her pale face, making sure to thoroughly coat her ears.

“Yes ma’am,” Tia said, washing her hands.

“Ma’am? MA’AM?” the employee hooted. “Sweetie, I bet I’m not that much older than you. How old are you anyway?”

“I’m eighteen,” Tia said, now drying her hands with the reusable soft towels.

“See? I’m nineteen. So, can it with the ‘Ma’am’ stuff. Got it?” the employee smiled, getting up from the padded stool.

“Well, what’s your name anyway?” Tia asked. “I mean, you know I’m Tia Manaken.”

“Siggy,” Sigrit Corruvic said, guiding them outside into the bright sunshine once more.

“Siggy?” Tia asked, cute face scrunched in confusion.

“It’s really Sigrit, God! I hate that name,” Siggy said, opening the gate and allowing Tia into the park’s proper once more. “See you.”

“Bye Siggy,” Tia said, scampering toward the next roller coaster, ‘The Plummet’ which was the tallest roller coaster in the state of Minnesota.

“Three hundred feet,” the sign announced. The roller coaster took the riders up to the dizzying height of three hundred feet, paused for a long moment, then plunged the riders down two hundred and fifty feet before leveling out and climbing once more. If that plunge wasn’t scary enough, it also twisted forty five degrees to the right just before barreling off of the tallest precipice, then descended into a long curve to the left before another two hundred foot plunge and another twist to the right. That plunge sent the carts into a loop de loop that let out into a tight circle to the left that brought the exhilarated riders back to the gate.

“I have never been able to ride this,” Siggy confessed as Tia stood, waiting for the carts to return to the starting place.

“Chicken!” Tia playfully taunted.

“I used to like you,” Siggy retorted, twisting her pretty face into a scowl.

Once again, Tia had to stand against the sign, proving that she was indeed tall enough to ride The Plummet. The heavy set employee gave a disinterested shrug before allowing Tia to scamper to a cart. In front of Siggy’s watchful eyes, Tia bravely selected the first cart, although she would have been happy with any other cart. No one joined her; she had the first cart all to herself. She playfully stuck her tongue out at the smiling Siggy just as the employee released the brake and the carts began the three hundred foot ascent.

The scream caught in Tia’s throat as she could now see just how high up three hundred feet really was. She did let out the shriek when the cart slowly twisted on the track, beginning a deceptively slow approach to the plummet.

“Aaieegh! I, oh, oh my God!” Tia screamed, actually afraid she was about to faint as the car hurtled downward into the twisting descent.

“Well?” Siggy asked as a weak-kneed Tia made her way to the gate.

“I, I’m glad I tinkled before I got on that thing!” Tia confessed and Siggy let out a delighted laugh.

The Mega-Pass got her into a mini-concert venue. The local band was very good; they did the history of ‘The British Invasion’ in music from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones through Led Zeppelin to One Direction. Tia had fun standing and dancing to the music. She was not the only one dancing; the singer encouraged the audience to ‘Twist and Shout.’

“I’m hungry,” Tia realized.

“I’m on my lunch break; I usually go to the Mexican restaurant,” Siggy said, pointing toward ‘Casa Playa.’

“You following me?” Tia playfully accused.

“Really? I was about to say the same thing,” Siggy retorted.

“Great minds think alike,” Tia shrugged, walking with Siggy to the Mexican restaurant.

Siggy got the steak fajita and Tia decided on chicken enchiladas. Over the meal, Tia learned that this was Siggy’s third summer working at the park. She was a student at GW Norris University in Eastblanc, Nebraska, studying finance. Her cheerleading at Coronation High School had secured her a scholarship with the college; she smirked when Tia shook her head. The scholarship paid tuition, books and room and board; she worked at the park during the summer to pay for everything else.

“I’ll, I’m going to Coronation in a couple of days,” Tia admitted. “After my dad’s running off we just don’t have the money for anything else.”

Coronation Community: Nothing wrong with that,” Siggy encouraged.

“I, I’m going do it again,” Tia decided, waving to Siggy as she ran to the Plummet once more.

She saw Viola and Thea and the two young men standing in a long line for another ride. Tia waved but her cousin and cousin’s friend pretended they had not seen Tia. The young man with Thea assumed the friendly wave was for him and smiled, gave a little head bob then flexed his biceps for Tia’s admiration. Thea slapped his arm and moved away from him.
