Chapter 4
“Well, got to make sure my little girl has a happy tummy,” Daisy smiled.
“I do,” Blakely agreed happily.
“And a happy face,” Daisy said, kissing the girl’s face. “And happy boobs, and a happy hiney and…”
A few weeks after Blakely moved into the home, Daisy was in the kitchen of Casa Ole when Martin Boyd of Boyd Investments Group happened to come through. The man was on his cell phone, talking with someone about Mickey’s Nightclub.
“Seriously? We need to just strike a match; that place is a dump,” Martin snapped. “What? Yes, yes, it’s licensed to serve food, but Jesus! Who would eat anything from there? I’m afraid to even sit on any of the chairs… Tell Tommy to kiss my ass… I’ve got to go; I’m at Casa Ole now. No, I’m standing right here in the kitchen. Again, tell Tommy the answer is no, the answer was no last week and the answer will be no next week. The answer is no.”
Martin smiled as he was introduced to the kitchen staff. The man asked each person about their jobs, about their treatment, both by the old manager, Billy Theriot and the new manager, Paige Guidry.
Miss Sassy, come on,” Morgan again demanded. “Tell us how you come up with this place.”
“Any time I ask my Blakely what she wants for supper? She always says ‘Hamburgers!’ So, I went to Martin Boyd, told him I’d put my house up for collateral; I wanted to open a hamburger restaurant,” Daisy said as Ally flipped the switch that lighted the ‘Open’ sign.
“But how you come up with the name?” Bryanna asked, even pointing to her right breast where the name ‘Sassy’s’ was imprinted.
“My date? Dennis DeFranco? He’d written on his business card that I was one sassy fuck,” Daisy said as the first customer entered the building. “Said he didn’t know how he had managed to handle all that heat.”
“Hi! Sit anywhere,” Ally greeted the customer.
“So, you put your house up for collateral?” Morgan asked a few hours later as the lunch rush was dying down. “Rodney, come on; table eleven, huh?”
“Sure did,” Daisy agreed. “That’s why, when y’all try get away with any shit? All I got to do is remind myself, this is my house y’all are fucking with.”
“That for table nine?” Bryanna asked, hurriedly putting the three plates onto a tray. “Rodney, table six, seven, and eleven; come on! We got people waiting.”
Rodney grumbled and muttered darkly as he grabbed his large bin. Isabella put a ticket on the spindle and hurried to pour a soda for Table three.
“Rodney, need glasses,” Isabella complained.
“Fuck! I only got two hands, huh?” Rodney loudly complained.
Daisy pursed her lips in disapproval; she hoped no customer would complain about the use of vulgarities. As it was, she planned to terminate Rodney’s employment. After all, this was her house, their house he was infringing upon. She had a stack of applications, hopefuls that wanted to work with half-dressed girls.
“Never mind,” Isabella snapped, sliding a tray of still steaming glasses into the service rack.
At a few minutes before five that evening, April Long came in through the rear door, stuffing her ankle length black hair into a hair net. She ignored Rodney’s far too effusive greeting and grabbed the first ticket from the spindle.
“Hi Miss Sassy,” Frankie Wilson, a short, pudgy brunette greeted April as she entered the rear of the restaurant. “Shut up Rodney; I don’t need none of your bull shit today, hear?”
“Fuck, whatever, stuck up bitch,” Rodney said as he put the rack of dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
“You’re pulling a double?” April verified with Rodney.
“Huh? No, no, Danny’s in the bathroom,” Rodney said. “This is my last load. Why? Want me to stick around?”
“Not if I don’t need you,” April said, slapping the patty onto the bottom half of the bun. “Flynn! Order up.”
“So, Miss Sassy, why you got us wearing these uniforms?” Isabella asked as she followed Daisy out into the rear parking lot.
“Yeah, my Daddy ’bout lost his shit,” Bryanna agreed, tugging on the half shirt.
“Why?” Daisy asked, smiling. “Uh? Because I like it?”
Isabella shook her head, smiling. Bryanna again flashed her breasts at Daisy, Isabella, and Morgan before getting into her father’s painstakingly restored 1964 Pontiac GTO Road Racer.
“Because,” Daisy said to herself as she closed the door of her car. “If I have to put up with a bunch of snotty little bitches, at least I can enjoy looking at y’all.”
While April kept Sassy’s moving, Daisy saw a strange automobile in her driveway. She was annoyed; the 2001 Toyota Camry with the New Mexico license plate was blocking access to her carport. She did wonder why Blakely had not told the visitor to move; Blakely often had study groups at the house but always made her fellow students park on the street.
“Hey Mom,” Grant smirked from his usual seat at the kitchen table.
“Grant,” Daisy gasped.
“So, uh, Mom? Anything you uh want to tell me?” Grant wore a knowing little smirk.
“No. Want to ask you where you’ve been for the past what, five years?” Daisy said, putting her purse on the side table.
“Uh, anything about uh, that cute little Mexican you got running around here?” Grant said, loutish smirk permanently etched on his face.
“My girlfriend,” Daisy said. “Where is she?”
“In your bedroom I think,” Grant shrugged.
“Well, I’ve been slaving over a hot stove all day; let me go shower,” Daisy said, fighting hard to keep her anger in check.
She wanted to slap that infuriating smirk from her irresponsible, insensitive son’s face. She was not ashamed of her homosexuality but her son’s knowing leer made it feel as if she should be ashamed of her relationship with the cute, loving and loveable Blakely.
“I don’t care if that is your son; he is a pig,” Blakely snarled when Daisy entered the bedroom.
“Yeah, he is. Call the police; he’s wanted for back child support,” Daisy hissed.
In the shower, Daisy allowed a few tears to slide down her face. Then she thought of the years of hand to mouth struggles, often skipping meals so that Grant, Graham and Felicity could eat. She thought of the numerous Christmases where she struggled to get gifts for the kids. She thought of her three granddaughters having to grow up in hand-me-down clothing, of mommies having to survive on Government assistance. With resolve, she scrubbed that day’s sweat from her flesh, then rinsed off.
Blakely looked up from her text book and licked her lips playfully as Daisy saunter, nude into the bedroom. Daisy smiled and softly kissed the girl before dressing in soft, comfortable clothes. With one more kiss to Blakely’s lips, Daisy left the bedroom, softly shutting the door behind her.
“So, Grant, where have you been?” Daisy asked, keeping an eye on the street just outside of her kitchen window.
“Was working in Canada for a while; God damn its cold up there, you hear? But the money is excellent,” Grant said.
“Canada?” Daisy asked, remembering that the Camry out front had New Mexico plates.
“Uh huh, then met this geologist? Alana? Anyway, she told me about these copper mines in New Mexico. Best thing? No snow all God damned winter,” Grant said.
“So, you been sending your child support to…” Daisy asked, seeing the DeGarde Police Department cruiser come to a stop just behind Grant’s car.
“Fuck them,” Grant sneered. “Stupid cunts believed…”
“No, Grant. Fuck you,” Daisy said as Leanne Schoenberger knocked on the side door, just as Blakely had advised them to do when she’d called the DeGarde Police Department. “Those girls? Those girls are your responsibility.”
“Aw, God damn it; you, you called the police?” Grant screamed, enraged. “Mom! Seriously? You, you called the fucking police? On your own son?”
“You damned right I did,” Daisy spat as she opened the side door. “Guess you don’t remember wanting to be Bat Man for Halloween? Guess you don’t remember wanting a new bike for Christmas? God damned right I called the police, you, you, you disgrace.”
“Dyke,” Grant spat hatefully at his mother.
“No. I’m a woman,” Daisy said as Leanne read Grant Ungelle his rights.
