Chapter 22
Maya crested the hill, her boots sliding in the ash-covered grass. In the center of a blackened crater stood the Wave Boss. It was a grotesque, towering monstrosity—a chimera fused from rotting timber, bleached bone, and pulsing purple sinew. It had three distinct heads: a skeletal wolf, a jagged wooden serpent, and a central mass of snapping, insectoid mandibles.
And the three Cardinal Heroes fighting it were an absolute disaster.
"Take this! Lightning Slash!" Ren shouted, his sword flashing. He actually managed to score a decent hit on the beast's leg, but before he could follow up, Motoyasu charged in.
"Out of my way, Ren! Meteor Thrust!" Motoyasu yelled, diving through the air with zero regard for positioning. He practically collided with Ren, forcing the Sword Hero to break his combo and roll away to avoid friendly fire.
Meanwhile, Itsuki stood completely still on a nearby rock, slowly pulling back his bowstring. "I will pierce your evil heart… wait for it…"
They're treating this like a single-player tutorial, Maya realized, her blood boiling. No aggro management. No tanking. Just three DPS classes spamming their flashiest cooldowns. The chimera let out a screeching roar. Its wooden serpent head lunged, completely ignoring Ren and Motoyasu, and snapped its jaws right at Itsuki, who was completely unprotected.
Maya sighed. She needed them to beat this boss to end the Wave, but if they won this easily by just throwing high-level stats at it, they would never learn. They needed a brutal, terrifying reality check.
[Equipping: Spider-Silk Gauntlet]
Maya launched herself into the crater, moving with the terrifying speed of her Level 21 Agility. She didn't attack the boss directly. Instead, she positioned herself right in the chaotic crossfire.
The chimera whipped its massive, bony tail in a wide arc. Motoyasu was mid-air, preparing for another flashy dive. Maya shot a thick thread of silk at a massive chunk of debris, yanking it violently into the path of the chimera's tail. The impact didn't stop the attack; it merely deflected it slightly upward—right into Motoyasu’s trajectory.
SMASH.
The Spear Hero was swatted out of the air like a bothersome fly, crashing into the dirt with a pained yelp. His health bar plummeted into the yellow zone.
"Ah! My ribs!" Motoyasu groaned, spitting dirt.
At the same moment, the central insectoid head reared back, its mandibles glowing with a sickly purple light, preparing an area-of-effect poison blast. Itsuki was still standing on his rock, finally releasing his arrow.
Maya "accidentally" stumbled backward, dodging cleanly out of the blast zone, leaving Itsuki directly in the line of fire. The purple sludge hit the rock, exploding into a corrosive mist. Itsuki coughed violently, his pristine armor sizzling as the poison status effect drained his HP into the red.
"Help! It burns!" Itsuki panicked, tumbling off the rock.
Ren backed away, his cool demeanor entirely shattered. He was panting, looking at his battered companions. "Nothing we do is doing lasting damage! Its armor is too thick!"
"That's because you're hitting the reinforced plating, you absolute morons!"
Maya’s voice cut through the chaos like a whip. She stepped to the center of the crater, the silk dissolving as heavy, dark metal slammed onto her forearms.
[Equipping: Meteoric-Iron Gauntlet]
"Listen to me, or you're all going to die right here!" Maya roared, dropping the naive maiden act completely for the sake of survival. Her eyes burned with absolute, commanding authority. "This is a raid boss! Stop fighting for the spotlight and do your damn jobs!"
The three boys, bruised, poisoned, and terrified, stared at her in shock.
"Ren!" Maya barked, pointing her iron fist at the Sword Hero. "You have the highest sustained DPS! Keep the serpent head busy! Parry its strikes, don't just tank them!"
Ren, recognizing the logic of a seasoned gamer, nodded sharply and dashed to the right flank.
"Itsuki!" Maya yelled, tossing him a low-tier antidote potion from her inventory. "Drink that, get off the ground, and use your piercing arrows to blind the wolf head! Stop charging your ultimate and just spam crowd-control!"
Itsuki downed the potion, coughing, and scrambled backward, rapidly firing arrows into the skeletal wolf's glowing eye sockets, forcing the beast to thrash blindly.
"And you!" Maya snapped, glaring down at Motoyasu as he struggled to his feet. "You have the longest melee reach! Stop jumping! Stay on the ground and cripple its back legs!"
"Y-Yes, ma'am!" Motoyasu stammered, his arrogance beaten out of him. He gripped his spear and rushed the chimera's flanks, thrusting at the knee joints.
With the three Heroes finally managing the boss's extremities and drawing its aggro, the chimera’s central core—a glowing, purple crystal embedded in its wooden chest—was left wide open.
This is it, Maya thought. Time to claim the MVP.
Maya sprinted straight at the towering monster. The insectoid head snapped down to bite her in half. Maya didn't dodge. From the shadow trailing behind her, a blur of midnight fur shot upward.
Onyx materialized mid-air, his jaws clamping shut over the insectoid mandibles, wrenching the massive head entirely to the side with his boosted strength. The beast screeched, completely off balance.
Maya leaped, using the beast's lowered neck as a ramp. She vaulted into the air, perfectly aligning herself with the glowing purple core. She pulled back her right arm, the Meteoric Iron glowing white-hot with the friction of her speed.
"Shatter!" Maya screamed, driving her iron fist directly into the crystal.
The heavy Gauntlet connected with a sound like a thunderclap. The magical barrier nullification of the Meteoric Iron bypassed the boss's defenses instantly. The core exploded into a shower of purple shards.
The massive chimera froze, letting out one final, echoing wail before it dissolved completely into thousands of digital polygons, washing over the crater like a wave of light.
[Wave Boss Defeated!]
[MVP Awarded: Maya Lin (Gauntlet Hero)]
[Bonus Loot Acquired: Chimera Core, Wave Forged Iron, Boss Soul]
The violent purple rift in the sky instantly slammed shut, taking the unnerving darkness with it. The afternoon sun broke through the clouds, shining down on the scarred battlefield.
Maya landed softly in the ash, breathing heavily, but her health bar was completely full. Onyx had already melted back into her shadow, completely unseen by the others.
Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki collapsed onto the ground, exhausted, covered in dirt, and staring at Maya with a mixture of utter shock and newfound, undeniable respect. She hadn't just saved them; she had completely commanded them.
