Chapter 6
The gentle hum of her office space enveloped Sienna as she typed away on her laptop. The soft clinking of her coffee mug hitting the desk and the rhythmic tapping of keys were the only sounds filling the room. The article she’d written about Caitlin Clark was a roaring success, and while her inbox was flooded with congratulatory messages, Sienna was already onto her next project.
A sudden knock at the door pulled her out of her concentration. Her brows furrowed in confusion. She wasn’t expecting anyone.
“Come in,” she called softly, her voice carrying a curious edge.
The door opened slowly, and Sienna froze. Her breath hitched, and her eyes went wide as the person standing in the doorway came into focus. A bright, uncontrollable smile spread across her face, lighting up her features.
“Joseph! Oh my gosh, you’re back!”
Before she could process what she was doing, Sienna shot up from her chair, launching herself at her boyfriend. Her arms wrapped around his neck, her legs curling around his waist in a spontaneous embrace. Joseph laughed, his deep chuckle resonating through the room as he caught her effortlessly, his free hand—holding a bouquet of pink and white roses—balancing the two of them.
His other hand found its place on her thighs, steadying her as she buried her face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his familiar, comforting scent.
“I missed you too, princess,” Joseph murmured, his tone warm and affectionate.
Sienna reluctantly released him, sliding down until her feet hit the ground, though her hands remained locked around his neck. She pulled back slightly to look at him, her smile never wavering.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice laced with both curiosity and excitement. “Didn’t you have a meeting today with the investors at Clarity Co.?”
Joseph grinned, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her closer. “I rescheduled it for tomorrow,” he admitted. “I wanted to surprise you, spend some quality time with my favorite person, and celebrate your success with that amazing Caitlin Clark article everyone’s raving about.”
He winked, holding up the bouquet as a peace offering.
Sienna’s cheeks warmed, and she tilted her head with mock suspicion. “You actually read my article?” she asked, as she took the flowers from him and inhaled their sweet scent.
“Of course I did, princess,” Joseph replied, his grin widening. “And let me tell you, it was a masterpiece. I was hooked from the first sentence to the last.”
Sienna blushed at the compliment, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re biased,” she accused playfully, but her tone was light and teasing.
Joseph leaned in closer, his blue eyes sparkling. “Maybe. But it doesn’t make it any less true.”
A comfortable silence filled the room as they gazed at each other, but then a mischievous glint sparkled in Sienna’s green eyes. She leaned back slightly, a playful smirk tugging at her lips.
“So…” she began, drawing out the word, “what did you have in mind for celebrating my success?”
Joseph’s grin turned devilish. “Well, my lovely journalist ,” he said, his voice dropping to a playful drawl, “how about lunch at that new restaurant that just opened downtown? Word is, they’ve got a killer menu. You up for a treat?”
Sienna tapped a finger to her chin, pretending to think hard. “Hmm… That does sound tempting,” she said, drawing out the words. Then she added with a smirk, “As long as we get dessert afterward.”
Joseph laughed, his deep voice filling the room. “Of course, princess. Anything for you. But for the record,” he added, his gaze raking over her playfully, “I already know what I want for dessert.”
Sienna felt a rush of heat climb to her cheeks at his implication. Swatting his bicep, she tried to mask her embarrassment with mock sternness. “You’re incorrigible,” she muttered, but the smile tugging at her lips gave her away.
Laughing, Joseph held the door open for her as they exited her office. “You wouldn’t have me any other way,” he teased, falling into step beside her.
As they made their way out of the building, Sienna couldn’t help but feel grateful. The whirlwind of her professional life had consumed so much of her time lately, but Joseph always knew how to bring her back to the things that truly mattered.
Lunch promised to be a memorable celebration, but deep down, Sienna knew the real treat was having Joseph by her side.
