Chapter 27
The Director stepped forward, script in hand, and let his gaze sweep across the cast and crew. “Alright, everyone, ready to get started?” he called out, his voice carrying easily through the set. “Remember—emotions may run high in today’s scenes, and that’s exactly what we need. But if at any point it feels like too much, don’t push through it. Just say so, and we’ll take a break. The work matters, but so do you.” He gave a firm nod, signaling both encouragement and authority, before motioning toward the cameras. “Let’s make it count.”
SCENE TWENTY
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE BEDROOM SET – MORNING
Soft sunlight filters through the curtains. The room is quiet except for the distant sound of birdsong piped in by the crew.
The DIRECTOR leans toward the monitors.
DIRECTOR
Scene Twenty — the morning after the attack. Izzy wakes with Vega still beside her. Play it tender but restrained — more about safety and trust than romance.
(beat)
And… action.
ON SET – BEDROOM
IZZY MARQUEZ (Rowan) stirs beneath the blanket, eyes fluttering open. She blinks against the light, disoriented at first. Then she realizes — she’s still curled against ELENA VEGA (Celeste).
Elena lies on top of the covers, propped halfway up against the headboard, suit vest still on. One arm rests protectively across Izzy’s shoulders. She hasn’t slept.
Izzy lifts her head slowly, looking up at her.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
You stayed.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
I said I would.
Izzy sits up slightly, brushing her hair back, her eyes searching Elena’s face.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Did you sleep at all?
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Not my priority.
Izzy shakes her head softly, a faint smile tugging at her lips despite the lingering fear.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
You can’t keep carrying the whole world on your shoulders.
Elena glances at her, expression unreadable but softer now.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Maybe I don’t know how to stop.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The close-up frames their faces in the morning light — Izzy’s vulnerability against Elena’s quiet strength.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
(whispering)
I meant it, you know. Thank you… for saving me.
Elena studies her, then nods once, voice low and firm.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Anytime.
A silence settles. Izzy leans back into her pillow, her eyes lingering on Elena. For the first time, suspicion isn’t in her gaze — just trust.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut! Beautiful. That’s the shift we needed. Print it.
ON SET – BEDROOM
The crew exhales. Rowan sits up, still half in the emotion of the moment. Celeste smooths her vest, calm as ever, but her eyes flick to Rowan before she steps aside.
The Director reviews playback, nodding with satisfaction.
DIRECTOR
That’s the morning-after dynamic. Next scene, we bring the father back in to complicate it.
SCENE TWENTY-ONE
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE STUDY SET – DAY
The set is dressed with sunlight streaming through the curtains, a half-empty glass of whiskey on the desk.
The DIRECTOR briefs the cast and crew.
DIRECTOR
Scene Twenty-One — Marquez confronts Vega in private. Heavy suspicion. Vega holds her ground. Play it tight.
(beat)
And… action.
ON SET – STUDY
MR. MARQUEZ (50s) sits behind his massive desk, posture rigid, hands folded. Across from him stands ELENA VEGA (Celeste), suit crisp, her stance calm but alert.
A long silence.
MR. MARQUEZ (IN CHARACTER)
You’ve saved my daughter’s life. For that, I’m grateful.
Elena inclines her head slightly, offering nothing more.
MR. MARQUEZ (IN CHARACTER)
But gratitude doesn’t erase questions.
(beat)
What are your intentions here? With her… with my family?
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
My intention is simple. Keep your daughter safe.
Marquez leans forward, eyes narrowing.
MR. MARQUEZ (IN CHARACTER)
And what do you expect in return?
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Nothing.
MR. MARQUEZ (IN CHARACTER)
(voice hard)
No one gives without wanting something back.
Elena steps closer to the desk, lowering her voice but never softening.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Then think of it this way — if I wanted something, you’d already know.
A long pause. Marquez studies her, then delivers the warning.
MR. MARQUEZ (IN CHARACTER)
If you hurt her… there won’t be a place on this earth where I won’t find you.
Elena’s smile fades into steel. She leans in just slightly, voice respectful but cutting.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Sir… respectfully, you don’t know me.
(beat)
And I don’t take threats lightly.
The air thickens. Marquez leans back in his chair, unsettled but hiding it.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The tension in the close-up is razor sharp: Marquez trying to assert dominance, Elena refusing to bow.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut! Perfect.
DIRECTOR
Exactly the edge Vega needed. Next scene, we bring Izzy back in and let that tension bleed into their dynamic.
SCENE TWENTY-TWO
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE HALLWAY SET – AFTERNOON
Warm light spills through tall windows. The study door opens. ELENA VEGA (Celeste) steps out, her suit sharp, expression smooth and unreadable.
Waiting just outside, arms crossed, is IZZY MARQUEZ (Rowan).
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
What was that about?
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Nothing that concerns you.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Every time you say that, I know it means the opposite.
Elena exhales softly, as if amused, but her mask doesn’t slip.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Then maybe you should trust me when I tell you there are things you don’t want to know.
Izzy steps closer, eyes flashing.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
What did he say?
(beat)
I know how he is. He’s protective of me — too protective sometimes.
Elena studies her for a long moment, then lowers her voice.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
He came into your room last night. He saw you curled against me. And he wanted to know my intentions.
Izzy blinks, caught off guard, but recovers quickly.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
(quiet, pressing)
And what are they?
Elena takes a step closer, her tone steady, her eyes locked on Izzy’s.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
I’ll tell you the same thing I told him.
(beat)
To keep you safe. No matter what.
A silence lingers — Izzy’s suspicion battling with something warmer rising inside her.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The camera holds on their faces, the unspoken tension hanging between them like a thread pulled taut.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut!
SCENE TWENTY-THREE
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE BEDROOM SET – NIGHT
The set glows softly under a single lamp. The crew is hushed, cameras trained for close angles.
The DIRECTOR leans forward.
DIRECTOR
Scene Twenty-Three — Izzy presses Vega past comfort. Vega must hold the line. Let the chemistry hit a wall here.
(beat)
And… action.
ON SET – BEDROOM
IZZY MARQUEZ (Rowan) lies beneath the blanket, turned toward ELENA VEGA (Celeste), who rests on top of the covers, hands folded across her stomach, eyes on the ceiling.
A silence stretches before Izzy speaks, voice soft.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
You smell good. What do you have on?
Elena flicks her eyes toward her, then back up.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Versace.
Izzy smiles faintly.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Keep wearing that.
She leans closer, pressing her nose near Elena’s neck, inhaling. Elena stiffens, her body freezing at the sudden intimacy. After a beat, she exhales slowly, forcing herself to relax — but her voice is firm.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Don’t do that.
Izzy blinks, surprised.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Why?
Elena turns her head slightly, her tone edged with restraint.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Because I’m trying to remain professional. My job is to keep you safe — not form relationships.
Izzy studies her, frustration and longing flickering across her face.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Well… what if I want it to be more than just a bodyguard and me?
Elena sits up abruptly, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. She stands, smoothing her vest, her expression hardening.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
That’s not possible.
She gathers her jacket from the chair, slipping it on with practiced precision.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Get some rest.
Without looking back, Elena strides to the door and exits, leaving Izzy staring after her, hurt and unsettled.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The frame lingers on Izzy alone in bed, emotions warring on her face.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut!
SCENE TWENTY-FOUR
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE HALLWAY SET – NIGHT
The corridor is dimly lit, sconces casting soft pools of light. Crew members stand quietly as the cameras set for a tracking shot.
The DIRECTOR addresses the cast.
DIRECTOR
Scene Twenty-Four — Izzy confronts Vega after she leaves. Push and pull — Izzy presses with emotion, Vega stays disciplined. Don’t let it tip into romance yet — this is a clash.
(beat)
And… action.
ON SET – HALLWAY
ELENA VEGA (Celeste) strides down the hall, jacket over her shoulder, her steps clipped and controlled.
IZZY MARQUEZ (Rowan) rushes after her, grabbing her arm. Elena stops but doesn’t turn at first.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
I know you feel something.
Elena finally turns, her face cool, unreadable.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Feelings aren’t in the job description.
Izzy stares at her, frustration burning. Before Elena can step away, Izzy suddenly leans in and kisses her — quick, insistent.
Elena freezes, then gently places a hand on Izzy’s shoulder, stopping her, breaking the kiss.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
You can’t do that again.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Why not?
Elena exhales, her jaw tightening.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
Because I don’t want to lose focus on the job. And I can’t… develop feelings.
Izzy’s eyes narrow, her voice sharp but tinged with hurt.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Seems like the feelings are already there.
(beat)
But okay.
She steps back, releasing Elena’s arm, then turns and walks away down the corridor, her posture stiff but her pace quick.
Elena watches her retreating figure, her expression conflicted. She shakes her head slowly, adjusting her jacket as she exhales.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The camera lingers on Elena alone in the hallway — controlled, but the flicker in her eyes betrays the cracks in her mask.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut.
SCENE TWENTY-FIVE
INT. SOUNDSTAGE – ESTATE GYM SET – NIGHT
The set is bare and industrial: a punching bag hanging in the center, weights stacked neatly along the walls.
The DIRECTOR briefs the crew.
DIRECTOR
Scene Twenty-Five — Vega alone in the gym. Raw emotion, no dialogue at first. Then Izzy catches her breaking down her mask. This is Vega’s breaking point.
(beat)
Action.
ON SET – GYM
ELENA VEGA (Celeste) slams her fists into the punching bag again and again. Sweat drips down her temple, her jaw clenched.
Her breath comes ragged, and under it, she mutters to herself.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
No feelings. No feelings. No feelings.
She hits harder, faster, until with one last blow — the chain snaps, and the punching bag crashes to the floor.
Elena staggers back, chest heaving.
She turns — and sees IZZY MARQUEZ (Rowan) standing in the doorway, wide-eyed.
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
Elena… are you okay?
Elena doesn’t answer. She just brushes past her, expression hard, heading toward the showers.
INT. ESTATE GUEST ROOM SET – SHOWER AREA – NIGHT
Steam rises. Elena stands under the running water, head bowed, trying to wash away the storm inside her.
The door creaks open. Izzy steps inside quietly, determination in her eyes. She slips off her robe, then pushes open the glass door of the shower.
Elena turns sharply, stunned.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
What are you doing?
IZZY (IN CHARACTER)
I want you.
Elena’s eyes widen. She pushes past her, grabbing a towel, dripping water across the floor.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
No.
She rushes out of the bathroom, clutching the towel around her. She grabs clothes from the chair in her room, pulling them on quickly, her movements urgent.
Izzy stands in the bathroom doorway, her expression falling.
INT. ESTATE HALLWAY SET – NIGHT
Elena storms out, now fully dressed. She stops one of the guards, her voice low but commanding.
ELENA (IN CHARACTER)
You’re in charge of her protection until I’m back.
The guard nods.
Without another word, Elena strides down the hall and out of frame, leaving Izzy behind in stunned silence.
CUT TO: MONITOR
The frame lingers on Izzy in the doorway, shaken and frustrated, watching Elena disappear.
DIRECTOR (O.S.)
And… cut.
