Chapter 57
“So do you think he’ll take the deal?” Rangi asked, watching as Kyoshi finished applying her makeup the following morning.
“Absolutely not,” She paused, setting the brush down. “But for the sake of not being known as a tyrant myself, I have to give people options. Even if it’s know they’re stupid enough to decline”
“All the more reason to kick his ass” The fire bender replied, grabbing Kyoshi’s gloves for her.
As Kyoshi made their way across the village’s ground there was a crowd where the gates once stood. So people seemed worried, wishing for reassurance that they wouldn’t have to flee. Others wished luck, and seemed optimistic.
“Why does she have that makeup on?” A small voice called.
Kyoshi looked down to see Koko in the crowd, she looked maybe the most worried of all. “I just have to take care of something really quick, I’ll be back before you know it.” Kyoshi smiled at the child, crouching down to her height.
“When will you be back?” Koko asked.
“I’ll be back for noodles and stories tonight” Kyoshi reassured the girl.
“So you think he’ll actually show?” Rangi asked, as Kyoshi stood up adjusting the fans in her sash.
She nodded, starting to walk away as she went to wave to the child and the warriors that were stationed at the edge of the village.
“I don’t know what he decided on but one way or the other this will be dealt with.”
“And you don’t want any help?”
But Kyoshi shook her head, as she pulled Rangi close for a moment. “I don’t know what he’s planning to do, and I don’t know if the village will be caught in the crossfire. But if anything happens, please Rangi take everyone. Take everyone and run. I won’t allow for them to be left defenseless again”
Rangi looked up, a sense of understanding in her eyes. “Just kick his ass, he deserves it for making us run all over the damn kingdom” Rangi laughed lightly.
“But you’ll take them all somewhere safe if I-“
“I promise” She replied, going up on her toes to kiss Kyoshi’s cheek. “Protect our home”
Kyoshi had turned to leave, beginning her walk to the middle ground between the two villages. There was no scenario that she would lose anymore, she wouldn’t allow it.
Home, a weird word Kyoshi thought. For a long time she had cursed this place, and everyone in. Letting her basically perish before the time she turned eight. But the people she had brought here, they probably could have made anywhere feel like a home.
When she got to the neck of the peninsula, Chin was in fact there, a massive army at his back. Lines and lines men, multiple flags of Chin’s waving in the air. Some bore shields, and weapons of there’s nothing at all.
“So you choose the ladder?” She shouted, across the distance. A grin formed on the short man’s face.
“I was thinking about your offer, and I don’t quite agree. However I would gladly take your little village as consolation for the inconvenience”
Absolutely the fuck not.
Some of the men marched forwards past their leader, presenting their flag with pride. Briskly taking her fans from sash, she raised a ripple of earth pushing the line of soldiers back. Like a wave moving across the ground.
She would make sure no one could pass her.
“You realize the path you have chosen, right chin?” She asked, taking a step forward.
“That’s Chin the Conqueror” He snapped. “I have accomplished more than you ever wish you could, I have an empire” He yelled.
“No, you’re a cowardly tyrant, who’s been on the run until you found enough people to back you up before you’d even considered speaking with me.”
“I had no obligation to entertain you for tea, but now I will take Yokoya now for your rude ignorance.” He stepped forward taking up a battle stance.
“You will not touch our home,” Kyoshi said as they stood in front of each other.
She was thinking of the people at the village, the people that she met there, the women who had seemed to gain a strong connection to the place as well. The little girl that snuck into her tent at nights to keep warm. She thought of Rangi and all the women guarding the front gates if she were to fail.
I will not allow this to fall to them.
“Do what you must to protect what’s close to you Kyoshi” She recognized Yancheng’s voice ringing through her head.
“One woman alone cannot stop us, or even me. Your village will be the next addition to the empire.” Chin shouted, pointing at her.
“You forget Chin, I am not one person, I have wisdom of hundreds before me. More than you could hope to count.” Kyoshi shot.
Despite this, if Chin called for a charge there was no way to stop them all from advancing, she could cut off the monster’s head in due time. But right now this was between her and Yokoya.
“Yokoya will perish, I should have burned the rest when I had the chance” Chin’s hand flew forward he had given the signal to charge, retreating back behind his men.
Soldiers continued to rush forwards in waves, and Kyoshi could feel herself starting to grow more and more behind as these groups got closer before she could disarm them.
They won’t stop coming. She thought of sending a stone wall forwards.
Both fans drawn she made a strong strike to her left and right leaving massive faults in her wake, before jumping down to split the earth completely, allowing a small trench to form as rocks tumbled down into the deep waters below.
But he did not acknowledge her warning shots, as more men shouted, making their charge. Chin himself tried to take a shot at her, disks of earth hurling towards her.
When they were far enough from Chin’s reach and nearly just falling with gravity, Kyoshi pulled the slabs down to fall into the faults she created.
“You will not take our home” She said looking up for one last look at Chin as she pulled what earthly material she could through the gap. Lava soon filled the space between the land, but that wasn’t enough. Lava would cool, people could still infiltrate their home in time.
With an explosive burst of fire, Kyoshi pushed the line of men back with an enormous gust of air. So strong it had also removed most of Chin’s horrendous attire.
No one will touch my home, or people who helped to make it one after all these years.
Kyoshi pushed harder, feeling the elements bend at her will as the earth separated from one another, as the now island was removed from the peninsula.
As the island was moved further and further away as wind pushed in all directions, Kyoshi looked up to see chin on the edge of it all screaming curses. Before the land he stood on was too fractured from Kyoshi’s actions and gave way, allowing him to fall into the dark waters, and rocks below. The head had been severed.
Before Kyoshi could recognize the rest of what was going on the main land was completely out of sight. The land she stood on had come to a halt, and the raw edges that were coated with lava had started to cool.
Her breath began to slow as she looked out to the waters, how far were they now off of the earth’s kingdom’s coastline?
I’ll have to go back to deal with the rest of the men soon. She thought dusting the rubble from her tunic.
“KYOSHI”
She would recognize that firenders yell anywhere. She spun to see her fire bender sprinting at full speed towards her.
“YOU TURNED YOKOYA INTO A FUCKING ISLAND” She shouted, “THIS IS NOT WHAT I THOUGHT YOU MENT BY ‘I WILL TAKE OF THINGS’ KYOSHI”
But we are safer for it. Kyoshi thought, taking a couple careful steps in the fire bender’s direction, starting to feel the weight of the battle.
“I didn’t expect that to be the outcome” She said her words shaking slightly, as her fans went loose in her grip.
“But Chin is gone, he is no more-” With that Kyoshi’s knees gave out, falling forward into the firebender.
Cradling her head Rangi kneeled in front of the slumped Avatar, “you’ve done all you set out to do then” Rangi said carefully. “I’m sorry that had to be the resort.”
The two stayed like that, staring out into the sea for a bit until Kyoshi could muster to stand with the help of her wife. “But since when could you move a fucking continent?”
As they walked back to the village, Kyoshi was met with wide looks. Pushing off the fire beer to stand by herself fully she took a breath.
“Chin is no more” She declared, “And we are all safer for it”
As she finished her sentence a small force came crashing against her legs. She looked down to see Koko at her feet grabbing at the skirts of her tunic. “Can we have noodles now?”
Okay writing this was harder than I thought cause I wanted to stay as true as possible to the original scene from the show, but I think it turned out okay. Please let me know what you think! The next chapters will probably jump around a bit more timeline wise, but I’m open to ideas for future chapters as well.
All in all thank you for waiting, I was able to pass my exams. But then had to wait out like a two day migraine that took me out to the point where I couldn’t even look at my computer screen so that’s why the wait was little longer than expected. Either way thank you for reading, and have a good day/night <3
