Chapter 41
The air was electric at Halloween Horror Nights. Neon lights flickered against the dark sky, the smell of popcorn and fog machine mist mingling together. Screams echoed from every corner of the park, followed by bursts of laughter. Dani was practically bouncing on her heels, her cropped leather jacket catching the glow of the lights, her grin wide and mischievous.
You, on the other hand, looked less enthusiastic. You tugged your hoodie tighter around yourself, eyeing the looming haunted house attraction with suspicion. The facade was massive – crooked windows, fake cobwebs, eerie red lights glowing from inside. A sign above the entrance read: The House of Shadows.
“Nope,” you muttered, shaking your head. “Absolutely not.”
Dani laughed, looping her arm through yours. “Come on, carino. It’ll be fun.”
“Fun for you,” you shot back. “I’ll have a heart attack.”
Dani leaned closer, her voice dropping into a teasing lilt. “Then I’ll save you. Hero girlfriend moment.”
You groaned. “You’re impossible.”
“And you love it,” she whispered, pressing a quick kiss to your cheek.
The other Katseye girls were already ahead, Sophia and Yoonchae practically sprinting towards the entrance, Lara and Megan laughing as they followed. Manon lingered behind, smirking at your reluctance. “You’re going to regret it if you don’t go in,” she teased.
“I’ll regret it if I do,” you muttered.
But Dani was relentless. She tugged you towards the line, grinning. “Trust me. You’ll survive.”
*
The line moved quickly, and soon they were stepping into the dimly lit hallway. Fog curled around their ankles, eerie music played faintly in the background. Dani squeezed your hand, her grin wide.
“This is amazing,” Dani whispered, eyes sparkling.
You clung to her arm, already tense. “This is hell.”
The first scare came almost immediately – an actor dressed as a zombie lunged from behind a curtain, growling. Dani screamed, then burst into laughter, clutching your hand tighter.
You yelped, burying your face against Dani’s shoulder. “Fuck! No, I hate this.”
Dani laughed harder, kissing the top of your head. “You’re adorable when you’re scared.”
“Shut up,” you muttered, refusing to let go of her.
You moved deeper in the maze, the walls narrowing, flickering lights overhead. Another actor popped out, this time in a clown mask, waving a fake chainsaw. Dani screamed again, then doubled over laughing.
You clung tighter, practically climbing onto her. “Why do people pay for this?”
“Because it’s fun!” Dani said, grinning. “Look at you, you’re practically glued to me.”
You groaned. “I’m going to kill you when we get out of here.”
Dani smirked, leaning close. “Promise?”
The maze twisted and turned, each corner hiding another scare. Actors popped out from trap doors, from behind mirrors, from the ceiling. Dani screamed every time, then laughed, her joy infectious. You however, were a mess – clinging to Dani, burying your face against her shoulder, muttering curses under your breath.
At one point, an actor dressed as a ghost slid across the floor, inches from your feet. You shrieked, jumping into Dani’s arms. Dani laughed so hard she nearly fell over.
“You’re ridiculous,” you muttered, refusing to let go.
“And you’re mine,” Dani whispered, kissing your cheek quickly before another scare made you both jump.
You stumbled through a hallway lined with mirrors, your reflections distorted. Dani grinned, spinning you playfully. “Dance with me, carino.”
“In a haunted house? Are you insane?” you hissed, clinging tighter.
“Insanely in love,” Dani teased, kissing you again.
Another actor popped out, and you screamed, clutching Dani’s jacket. Dani laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes. “You’re killing me,” she whispered.
“You’re killing me,” you shot back. “I’m going to die in here.”
Finally, you reached the last stretch – a long hallway filled with fog, strobe lights flashing. Actors lined the sides, lunging as they passed. Dani screamed and laughed, dragging you through. You clung desperately, muttering curses with every step.
When they burst out the exit, the cool night air hit them like a relief. You collapsed against Dani, breathless. “Never again.”
Dani laughed, wrapping her arms around you. “That was amazing.”
“You’re insane,” you muttered, still clinging to her.
“And you love it,” Dani whispered, kissing your forehead.
The other girls were waiting outside, laughing at their reactions. Sophia grinned. “You look terrified, Y/N.”
“I was,” you admitted. “It was awful.”
Yoonchae giggled. “Dani looked like she was having the time of her life.”
“I was.” Dani said proudly, still grinning. “Best night ever.”
You groaned. “You’re impossible.”
Dani kissed you quickly, her smile softening. “But you love me anyway.”
You sighed, leaning against her. “Unfortunately.”
Dani laughed, holding you close. “Haunted houses, horror nights, whatever – as long as you’re clinging to me, I’m happy.”
*
You wandered back through the park, the adrenaline fading into laughter. Dani teased you relentlessly, recounting every scream, every jump, every curse. You rolled your eyes, though your smile betrayed you.
“You’re never dragging me into one of those again,” you muttered.
“Next year,” Dani teased.
“Over my dead body.”
“Exactly,” Dani said, grinning. “Perfect theme.”
You groaned, but you couldn’t help but laugh too.
The night ended with you curled up together on a bench, the chaos of the haunted house fading into quiet comfort. Dani leaned against you, still grinning. “You’re the cutest scaredy-cat I’ve ever seen.”
You kissed her quickly, smiling. “And you’re the most annoying girlfriend I’ve ever had.”
“Best combo,” Dani whispered, pressing another kiss to your lips.
