Chapter 21
It’s now been a few months since Dani came out. Right now they’re all on a two-week vacation, which means they’re all away visiting their families, and let’s just say Daniela and Megan are not enjoying being apart.
Daniela is in Atlanta visiting her parents, while Megan is in Hawaii with her family, and the six-hour time difference is definitely not helping.
This past months, their relationship had developed so much. Some would think that being together almost 24/7 would get annoying, but not for Megan and Dani.. if anything, the girls had grown attached to being together all the time. They loved it.
They got used to each other’s routines, voices, presence… even sharing. Well. A lot of things. Clothes, food, late-night playlists… beds.
Lara and Manon had gotten tired of seeing them switching rooms everything so they just decided to room together instead.
And now? Now they were thousands of miles apart, reduced to glitchy FaceTimes, sleepy voice notes, and texting until one of them inevitably passed out from the time difference. It sucked.
They missed each other, loudly, dramatically, painfully. Dani was currently lying upside down on her childhood bed in Atlanta, her feet hanging over the headboard, phone pressed to her ear as Megan’s sleepy voice played through a voice note for the fifth time.
She could practically hear Megan’s soft, morning-raspy “good morning, babe: in her head. God, she missed her. She stared at the ceiling. “Esto es ridículo.” she muttered to herself, “¿Cómo se supone que voy a sobrevivir dos semanas? Necesito a esa chica. Yo…” Her mom’s voice cut through the door.
“Daniela, ¡baja a comer!” Dani groaned. “Ya voy !” she yelled back, then whispered dramatically to her phone, “She does not understand my suffering, Megan. She does not know I’m in emotional crisis.”
Meanwhile, Megan was in Hawaii, sitting on the beach with her little cousins building sandcastles or rather, pretending to help while doing absolutely nothing except staring at her phone, waiting for Dani to text. Her mom sat next to her, sunglasses on, eyebrows raised.
“You’ve checked that phone ninety times in the last ten minutes.” Megan didn’t even look up. “That sounds fake but okay.”
Her phone buzzed.
She straightened so fast she nearly kicked a bucket of sand over a toddler.
Dani <3: i miss u like actually i think im dying pls come home before i pass away dramatically Megan smiled so big her mom shook her head.
“You’re in love,” her mother said knowingly. Megan hid behind her phone, face on fire. “…No I’m not.” Her mom laughed. “Sure, sweetheart. And I’m Beyoncé.”

They hadn’t even made it a two day’s into break before the suffering began. Megan was lying face-down on her childhood bed in Hawaii, groaning dramatically into a pillow shaped like a giant pineapple. “I miss her so much it physically hurts,” she whined.
From the doorway, her older cousin rolled her eyes. “Girl, you saw her, like, two day’s ago.”
“Love is pain, Lila. Educate yourself.”
Meanwhile, across the country in Atlanta, Daniela was sitting at her parents’ kitchen table, chin on the table, staring at her phone like it had personally betrayed her. “Dani, cómelo antes de que se enfríe.” her mom scolded.
“No puedo,”Dani sighed deeply. “Estoy enferma de amor, es una condición.”
Her dad blinked. “¿Desde cuándo te enfermas por sentimientos?”
“Desde Megan,” she muttered, clutching her heart dramatically.
Her father chuckled, “Eres insoportable.”

Now it’s the next day, so 3 days since they were apart. It’s about 4PM in Atlanta, and 10AM in Hawaii, Dani is waiting for Megan’s FaceTime call, the girl was supposed to call her as soon as she wakes up, which should be any minute now. And as if on cue her phone started ringing and Megan’s contact photo was shown on the screen. Daniela answered so fast, grinning when Megan’s tired face popped up on screen. “Hi..” Megan says eyes half lidded, voice raspy. ”
Daniela visibly melted.
“Oh my God,” she groaned dramatically, flopping backward onto her bed. “That voice. Absolutely not. How am I supposed to survive this call?”
Megan blinked sleepily at the screen. “What?”
“You sound too cute. It’s evil.”
That earned a tiny giggle from Megan, the kind that always made Daniela’s chest feel warm. She adjusted the phone slightly, and Dani could now see that she was still wrapped up in blankets, hair messy in every direction.
“You literally called me at three in the morning crying because you missed me,” Megan pointed out.
“I was emotional.”
“You were dramatic.”
“I’m Latina, it’s cultural.”
Megan snorted so suddenly she almost dropped her phone.
God. Daniela missed making her laugh in person.
“Did you just wake up?” Dani asked softly.
Megan nodded, rubbing one eye. “Mhm. First thing I did was call you.”
Daniela pressed a hand to her chest. “Oh, she’s trying to kill me now.”
Megan smiled sleepily. “Missed you.”
That one sentence hit Daniela embarrassingly hard.
“I miss you too, mi amor,” she admitted, quieter this time. “Like… a stupid amount.”
For a second neither of them said anything, just staring at each other through the screen with matching soft smiles.
Then suddenly,
“MEGAN! Breakfast!” her mom yelled from downstairs.
Megan groaned loudly, shoving her face into her pillow. “Noooo.”
Daniela laughed. “Go eat.”
“I don’t want to.”
“You need food to survive.”
“I only need you.”
Dani gasped dramatically. “That was smooth. Write that down.”
Megan finally sat up a little, squinting at the screen. “Wait… why do you look so awake? It’s four in the afternoon there.”
“Because unlike some people, I don’t sleep until noon.”
Megan frowned immediately. “I do not sleep until noon.”
“Babe, it is literally ten AM and you look deceased.”
“I hate you.”
“No you don’t.”
“…No I don’t,” Megan admitted quietly.
Daniela grinned so hard her cheeks hurt.
Then Megan suddenly narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Wait. Have you eaten today?”
Daniela froze.
“…Maybe.”
“Daniela.”
“I had coffee?”
Megan gasped in horror. “DANI!”
“What? I forgot!”
“You can’t survive on iced coffee and yearning!”
Daniela burst out laughing so loudly her mom yelled from downstairs again.
“¡Daniela! ¡La comida!”
Megan pointed accusingly at the screen. “Go eat right now.”
“Bossy.”
“You love it.”
“…Maybe a little.”
Megan smiled triumphantly, then yawned so hard her eyes watered.
Daniela’s entire expression softened instantly. “You’re still tired, huh?”
Megan nodded miserably. “Time zones are stupid.”
“They are,” Dani agreed quietly.
A brief silence settled between them again, softer this time.
“I wish you were here,” Megan whispered eventually.
Daniela swallowed.
“Me too.”
Soft silence.
“Meiyok!” Megan’s mom called again.
“Okay I really have to go, call you after ?” She asked.
Dani nodded,”Of course,”
“Okay, i love you, bye” Megan said smiling,
Danj froze for a second, then,”Te amo Megan, call you later” then she hang up.
