Chapter 33

The Spectral Leviathan floated ominously above the blood-soaked valley, its skeletal cannons glowing with cursed blue fire. At Level 60, it completely outclassed every single person on the battlefield.

"Itsuki!" Maya roared, sprinting past the unconscious Spear Hero. "Get up! Command the surviving royal mages! Target the hull's underbelly!"

Itsuki, his pride entirely shattered by the reality of the Wave, scrambled to his feet. "Light arrows! Fire spells! Aim for the keel!" he screamed, his voice cracking.

A barrage of low-tier magic and glowing arrows slammed into the Ghost Ship. A shimmering, hexagonal blue barrier flared around the hull, absorbing the hits effortlessly.

"The magic shielding is too thick!" Ren yelled, gripping his cracked sword.

"Then I'll break it!" Maya shouted. She vaulted off a jagged boulder, launching herself high into the air directly beneath the galleon.

**[Equipping: Meteoric-Iron Gauntlet]**

The heavy, magic-nullifying metal encased her fist. As gravity began to pull her down, she drove a devastating uppercut right into the center of the blue barrier. The Meteoric Iron screamed against the magical frequency, and with a sound like shattering glass, the ship's defensive field exploded into useless sparks.

"Naofumi! Now!" Maya yelled as she fell back to the dirt.

Maya instantly swapped forms. **[Equipping: Spider-Silk Gauntlet]**. She aimed both wrists at the exposed wooden hull and fired two massive, thick cables of woven silk, anchoring them deep into the rotting timber.

She landed hard, her boots digging trenches into the soil. She grabbed the silk cables. "Grab a line, Shield! Pull it out of the sky!"

Naofumi didn't hesitate. He dropped his shield, grabbing the glowing white tethers with both hands. From Maya's shadow, Onyx erupted, clamping his massive jaws onto the silk rope. With the combined raw Strength stats of the Gauntlet, the Shield, and the Shadow Wolf, they leaned back and *pulled*.

The Spectral Leviathan groaned. The ship tilted violently, its massive wooden frame groaning against the strain as it was forcefully dragged down toward the earth, hovering just fifty feet above the ground.

"Air Strike Shield!" Naofumi roared, maintaining his grip on the tether with one hand while casting with the other.

A glowing green barrier materialized in mid-air, angled like a ramp. Then another. And another. A staircase of hard-light shields leading straight up to the deck of the grounded Ghost Ship.

"Vanguard, go!" Naofumi yelled, his muscles bulging as he and Onyx held the colossal ship in place.

Maya and Raphtalia didn't need to be told twice. They sprinted up the glowing green steps, leaping over the ship's railing and crashing onto the cursed deck.

The battle was absolute, extreme chaos. The spectral Kraken wrapped around the mast lashed out with massive, ghostly tentacles. Raphtalia was a blur of motion, her iron sword slicing through the spectral appendages to keep them off Maya.

Maya fought her way to the center of the deck, dodging point-blank blasts of blue fire from the skeletal crew. She took a glancing hit from a Kraken tentacle that threw her violently against the mast, dropping her HP by a terrifying thirty percent in one strike.

She spat blood, equipping the **[Granite Gauntlet]**. She charged the central grate, smashing through the wooden deck to reveal the ship's glowing, pulsing Level 60 Boss Core.

"Shatter!" Maya screamed, driving both heavy stone fists down with every ounce of momentum she had.

The core cracked, flared blindingly white, and detonated.

The Ghost Ship let out a deafening, otherworldly wail. The skeletal crew disintegrated, the Kraken dissolved into mist, and the massive galleon collapsed into a mountain of digital ash, showering the valley in high-tier loot.

Maya and Raphtalia landed heavily in the dirt, panting, completely covered in ash and bruises. Naofumi dropped to one knee, exhausted from holding the ship. Ren and Itsuki sagged in relief.

**[Wave Boss Defeated!]**

But the alarm in Maya's head didn't stop ringing.

She looked up. The sky was still black. The central dimensional rift hadn't closed.

"Why isn't it ending?" Itsuki panicked, lowering his bow.

From the center of the purple rift, a figure slowly descended, floating down as lightly as a feather.

It wasn't a monster. It was a woman. She wore a traditional, elegant black kimono adorned with a floral pattern, and her long black hair fluttered in the unnatural wind. In her hands, she held two ornate, steel-ribbed folding fans.

She touched down lightly on the ash-covered ground. She looked at the dissolving remains of the Ghost Ship, and then at the exhausted Heroes.

"How disappointing," the woman spoke, her voice calm, melodic, and entirely devoid of fear. "I was told the Cardinal Heroes of this world were formidable. Yet it took all of you to bring down a mere plaything."

"Who the hell are you?" Ren demanded, gripping his sword. He stepped forward, his pride wounded. Motoyasu, who had just regained consciousness, grabbed his spear, and Itsuki raised his bow.

The woman slowly opened one of her fans, obscuring the lower half of her face. "I am Glass. And I am the true enemy of your world."

"Let's take her!" Motoyasu yelled, charging forward blindly. "Meteor Thrust!"

"Lightning Slash!" Ren echoed, flanking her.

"Thunder Arrow!" Itsuki fired from the rear.

The three ultimate attacks converged on the woman in the kimono.

Glass didn't even adopt a fighting stance. She simply swiped her fan in a single, elegant, circular motion.

*“Reverse Snow Moon Flower.”*

A shockwave of sheer, unfathomable kinetic energy erupted from the fan. It completely shattered Motoyasu's spear thrust, obliterated Ren's sword beam, and deflected Itsuki's arrow. The shockwave hit the three Heroes with the force of a hurricane.

Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki were launched backward like ragdolls, their armor shattering. They crashed into the canyon walls, their health bars instantly plummeting into the deep red—one percentage point away from instant death. They collapsed, completely incapacitated in a single second.

Maya’s blood ran ice-cold. She quickly analyzed Glass.

**[Target: Glass. Level: ???]**

*Her level is masked,* Maya thought in pure terror. *She just one-shot three Cardinal Heroes without breaking a sweat. We are completely out of our league.*

Glass turned her dark eyes toward Maya and Naofumi, who were standing in front of the injured Raphtalia. "A Shield and a Gauntlet. Will you provide a better dance?"

Maya didn't hesitate. "Naofumi, maximum defense! Do not let her hit you directly!"

Glass moved. She didn't sprint; she simply vanished and reappeared directly in front of Naofumi, her steel fan aimed at his throat.

"Shield Prison!" Naofumi roared. The green dome erupted, trying to trap her.

Glass casually tapped the inside of the prison with her fan. *CRACK.* The impenetrable Level 33 shield shattered into a million pieces like cheap glass.

Maya was already moving. **[Equipping: Granite Gauntlet]**. She stepped into the opening, throwing a massive right hook aimed at Glass's temple.

Glass didn't dodge. She merely raised her closed fan, catching Maya’s heavy stone fist dead-on. The impact created a shockwave that kicked up a cloud of ash, but Glass’s arm didn't even tremble. She had completely parried a stat-boosted, heavy-form strike with one hand.

"Impressive physical strength," Glass noted coldly. She flicked her wrist, parrying Maya’s fist aside and driving the butt of her fan into Maya’s ribs.

Maya felt something crack. She was thrown backward, skidding through the dirt, her HP bar dropping by half.

"Maya!" Naofumi yelled. "Air Strike Shield! Second Shield!" He threw up two barriers to block Glass's advance, then lunged forward with Raphtalia, trying to catch Glass in a pincer attack.

Glass danced between them. She was untouchable. Naofumi's defenses were barely holding, and Raphtalia's sword strikes were being deflected by the steel ribs of the fans.

Maya forced herself up, spitting blood. *Raw damage won't work. Traps won't work. We just have to survive!*

"Ren! Itsuki!" Maya screamed, pointing at the bleeding Heroes slumped against the rocks. "If you don't want to die, give us covering fire! NOW!"

Ren, barely conscious and coughing up blood, managed to lift his broken sword. He fired a weak, desperate *Wind Slash*. Itsuki, his hands trembling, fired a basic iron arrow.

The attacks were pathetic, but they forced Glass to briefly raise her fan to deflect them.

It was the only opening Maya and Naofumi needed.

"Together!" Maya yelled, her Gauntlet shifting to the **[Chimera-Acid]** form.

Naofumi rushed forward, slamming his Wyvern-scale shield directly into Glass's fan, using all his strength to pin her arm for a fraction of a second. Onyx leaped from the shadows, biting down on Glass's kimono sleeve, anchoring her in place.

Maya pivoted, putting her entire body weight into a glowing green punch aimed directly at the center of Glass's chest.

Glass’s eyes widened slightly. For the first time, she was locked in place. The acid gauntlet slammed into her chest.

*HISS.*

A localized explosion of kinetic force and corrosive acid erupted between them. Maya was thrown backward by the recoil, her gauntlet smoking. Naofumi was pushed back ten feet, his boots dragging in the dirt.

When the smoke cleared, Glass was still standing. Her kimono was slightly singed, and there was a small burn mark on her shoulder, but she looked entirely unfazed.

Maya fell to her knees, completely out of stamina, her Gauntlet automatically reverting to its base silver form. Naofumi's shield arm hung limp at his side. They had hit her with a perfectly coordinated, all-out combination attack… and it had barely scratched her.

"A commendable effort," Glass said softly, raising her fans to deliver the final, killing blow. "You two are the only true Heroes in this world. It is a shame you must die."

Maya gritted her teeth, staring death in the face. She couldn't feel her arms. Onyx was whimpering in her shadow. This was it.

Suddenly, a loud, resonant *BONG* echoed through the valley. It sounded like a massive cathedral bell.

The black sky above them violently shuddered. The dimensional rift, which had been perfectly stable, began to crack and fold in on itself, glowing with a chaotic red light.

Glass stopped, her fans hovering inches from Naofumi's neck. She looked up at the collapsing rift. A look of profound irritation crossed her elegant features.

"The time limit," Glass whispered, lowering her weapons.

The Wave wasn't just an invasion; it was a temporary bridge between worlds. And the hourglass had finally run empty.

A beam of red light shot from the rift, enveloping Glass. She was being forcibly pulled back to wherever she came from.

She looked down at Maya and Naofumi, her dark eyes completely serious.

"Gauntlet. Shield. I shall remember your faces," Glass declared as she began to float upward. "Survive until the next Wave. I will return to finish this dance."

The rift snapped shut with a deafening crack.

The unnatural darkness instantly vanished, replaced by the bruised, orange light of the late afternoon sun. The surviving monsters scattered, dissolving into the wind without the rift's energy to sustain them.

The valley was utterly silent, save for the groans of the injured.

Maya collapsed entirely onto the ash-covered dirt, staring up at the clear sky. Her lungs burned, her armor was shattered, and her cover was hanging by a thread. They had won the Wave, but they had lost the war.

She turned her head, making eye contact with Naofumi, who was slumped over his shield, breathing heavily.

They both knew the terrifying truth. The game was over. The real apocalypse had just begun.
