Chapter 21

The sky above Lute Village didn't just break; it shattered.

A torrent of nightmarish creatures poured from the jagged purple rift in the sky, crashing into the rolling fields like a tidal wave of teeth, claws, and rusted armor. In the distance, flashes of brilliant light indicated that Ren, Motoyasu, and Itsuki had engaged the main force near the rift, completely ignoring the tidal wave of monsters breaking off toward the defenseless village.

Maya stood directly in the center of the open village gates, slamming her silver fists together.

[Equipping: Wyvern-Scale Gauntlet]

Heavy, crimson-and-black scaled plating encased her forearms, radiating a faint, defensive heat.

"Myne!" Maya roared over the deafening screech of the monsters. "Take the high ground! Burn anything that tries to climb the palisades! I will not let a single one through this gate!"

Myne, positioned safely on top of the wooden wall and eager to play the beautiful savior, raised her rapier. "Leave it to me, Maya-sama! Hellfire Barrage!"

Volleys of fire rained down from the wall, incinerating the vanguard of low-level zombies and insectoids. But there were simply too many. A towering, grotesque creature that looked like a stitched-together ogre barreled through the flames, raising a massive club to smash the gate.

Maya didn't flinch. She stepped forward, planting her feet, and threw a brutal straight punch perfectly timed to meet the ogre's descending club.

CRACK.

The Wyvern-Scale Gauntlet completely shattered the wooden club. Before the ogre could recover, a blur of midnight fur shot out from Maya's shadow. Onyx leaped into the air, his jaws clamping down on the ogre's throat with terrifying, predatory force. The monster dissolved into pixels instantly.

"Next!" Maya shouted, falling into a flawless fighting rhythm.

For ten agonizing minutes, the gate was an absolute meat grinder. Maya punched, kicked, and grappled, using her real-world martial arts to efficiently dismantle anything that got close, while Onyx struck from the blind spots. But as a squad of heavily armored Undead Knights marched toward the gate in a disciplined formation, Maya felt her stamina bar dipping. She couldn't break their shields fast enough before the horde overwhelmed the villagers behind her.

Suddenly, a figure dropped from the trees bordering the dirt road.

A small, sturdy shield, reinforced with the exact Wyvern scale Maya had secretly bought from the black market, slammed into the lead Undead Knight with the force of a battering ram. The knight staggered backward, its formation broken.

"Naofumi!" a young, determined voice cried out.

From behind the Shield Hero, a small demi-human girl with raccoon ears and a fluffy tail darted forward. She wore sturdy leather armor and gripped a short iron sword. Moving with surprising speed, she slipped past the staggered knight's guard and drove her blade cleanly through the glowing core in its chest.

Maya's eyes widened, a massive, hidden smile spreading across her face. Naofumi. You used the gold to buy a slave, but you didn't buy a worker… you bought a sword. And you geared her up perfectly.

"What is that Demon doing here?!" Myne shrieked from the wall, her fire magic sputtering in sheer indignation. "Maya-sama, kill him! He's trying to steal our glory!"

Maya knew she had to keep her cover flawless. She locked eyes with Naofumi across the chaotic battlefield.

"Stay out of my way, Shield!" Maya yelled loudly, pointing her Gauntlet at him. "If you cross the center of this road, I'll smash you myself!"

Naofumi caught the hidden meaning instantly. Take the left flank. I'll take the right. "Wouldn't dream of dirtying my hands with your kills, Gauntlet!" Naofumi shouted back, stepping smoothly to the left side of the gate. He raised his shield, a green aura flaring as he triggered a skill. "Air Strike Shield!"

A massive, glowing green shield materialized in mid-air, completely blocking the path of three charging monsters.

"Raphtalia, now!" Naofumi ordered.

"Right!" the raccoon girl shouted, using the glowing green shield as a springboard to launch herself into the air and strike the monsters from above.

The coordination between the two parties was a masterpiece of silent communication. Maya and Onyx held the right; Naofumi and Raphtalia held the left. Whenever a monster tried to flank Raphtalia, Maya would "accidentally" throw a severed monster limb or a heavy stone right into its path. When a beast lunged at Maya's blind spot, Naofumi would "carelessly" shove an Undead Knight into its trajectory, throwing it off balance.

To the militia and Myne, it looked like the two Heroes were fiercely competing, aggressively fighting side-by-side but completely ignoring each other. In reality, they had formed a perfectly synchronized, impenetrable wall of defense.

But as Maya shattered the skull of another gargoyle, she looked out at the rolling plains. The dimensional rift wasn't closing. The horde was growing thicker.

Holding the line isn't enough, Maya realized, wiping monster blood from her cheek. If we just play defense, we'll run out of stamina before the timer ends. Ren and the others must be struggling with the Wave Boss.

Maya made a split-second tactical decision.

"Myne! Keep the walls clear! Militia, hold the barricades!" Maya roared over the din of battle. She turned slightly, locking eyes with Naofumi, projecting her voice so only he could hear the true meaning. "If the village falls while I'm gone, I'm blaming you, Shield!"

Naofumi smirked, bashing a monster with his shield. "Don't trip on your way out!"

[Equipping: Chimera-Acid Gauntlet]

The heavy scales melted into the glowing, highly corrosive green metal.

"Onyx, with me!" Maya commanded.

She abandoned the safety of the gate. Like a cannonball fired into a dense forest, Maya dove headfirst into the sea of monsters. She abandoned defensive strikes entirely, fully unleashing her Level 21 stats. Her glowing green fists carved a literal path of melted armor and dissolving flesh through the horde. Onyx was a blur of black fur and red eyes at her side, tearing the throats out of anything that tried to attack her from behind.

She pushed deeper and deeper into the fields, moving away from Lute Village and heading straight toward the epicenter of the Calamity, where the sky was bleeding the darkest purple.

As she crested a small hill, the true horrors of the Wave came into view. She could see Ren's sword flashing and Motoyasu's spear thrusting in the distance, but they were surrounded. And hovering above them, emerging from the rift, was the Wave Boss-a monstrous, multi-headed chimera made of rotting wood and bone.
