Chapter 6
Paige’s POV
I don’t know what it is about this, but this moment feels perfect, even though we are actively on the run. With different circumstances, I would wish for this to never end. My beautiful girlfriend is sleeping next to me, clinging to me in her sleep. My teammates in the backseat are still talking to each other after their interrupted sleep.
Just the five of us.
On an open road, nothing in sight for miles. I know this won’t last much longer, but I’ll savor every moment while I can. I turn to look at the girl currently draping her head over my shoulder, her body positioned over the armrest.
She is so effortlessly perfect. The way she can read me like a book, how she constantly checks up on other people while simultaneously still taking care of herself, it’s all so natural for her. I realize she can feel my stares in her sleep as she starts to stir awake, looking up to me as she sits up.
“Good morning, princess,” I whisper, grabbing her hand.
She answers with a simple nod, lifting her eyes to stare at mine. “Where are we right now, baby?” she questions. I can’t help but zone out, forgetting about her question, staring into her eyes. The small twinkle in her brown eyes, pupils huge.
It must be more obvious than I think, as Aubrey shouts out from the backseat, “You’re so whipped!”
I roll my eyes, “You’re whipped for Jane, so don’t even.” That shut her up, making her roll her eyes in return.
The car grows in silence for a while before KK eventually speaks, “So boom, where are we going? Or do we even know?” She questions. The truth is, we are mindlessly driving down this street, there haven’t been any turns in hours, and the last time we saw another car was as we were leaving.
“I’m still figuring it out,” I say, making everyone in the car let out a sigh. “As soon as I figure it out, you will all be the first to know,” I say, trying to instill hope.
It doesn’t work.
“Baby, I can’t take being out here much longer. This car is too small, we’ve been driving for hours, and you still haven’t told me what we are running from.” The beautiful girl sat next to me says looking for any information at all.
“I just need you to trust me, princess,” I tell her.
She pulls her hand out of mine in annoyance, turning away from me. “Don’t be like that, Az.”
She doesn’t respond.
“Please don’t give me the silent treatment, baby,” I plead with her. She ignores my pleas.
This is going to be a long drive.

Azzi’s POV
I feel the car come to a stop, making me stir awake. I open one eye just enough to see my surroundings. I see Paige waking up our teammates and then walking over to my door, opening it. “It’s okay, you can go back to sleep, Princess.” She says, making me nod. I feel her lift me into her arms, bridal style, and close the door behind her.
The next time I open my eyes, I am surrounded by the feeling of comfort. I immediately spot Paige standing a few feet away from me, talking to someone. I look down and realize I am in a hotel bed.
She notices my eyes peeping open and walks back over to me.
“Hey, sleepy head.” She whispers, “You were knocked out for a while.”
I don’t respond.
She groans, “We are still doing this silent treatment thing?”
I just look into her eyes cockily.
She takes my silence as an answer. She starts walking away from the bed, annoyed, making me grow confused.
She walks around the bed, sliding in from the other side.
Not the reaction I expected at all.
“You annoy me sometimes, you know that?”She says, laughing slightly, while pulling me closer to her.
She pulls me onto her lap, facing her, wrapping her arms around my waist instinctively.
“Kamora, Caroline, and Aubs are sharing a room with us. They can figure out their sleeping arrangement themselves, and we will just share a bed.” She tells me already deciding.
“Hmm, I don’t know if you deserve to sleep in the bed; you could take the couch,” I say, smiling.
She rolls her eyes, “So we are talking now?” She says, looking up into my eyes.
“Only because you annoyed me too much to remain silent,” I say jokingly.
She overdramatically gasps, making us both giggle.
Aubrey walks into the room and makes a look of disgust. “Oh, you’re WHIPPED.” She emphasizes.
“Did you come in here for a reason or just to insult me?” Paige asks, pulling me closer into her.
“We were wondering if you ripped the band-aid off yet?” Aubrey asks, making me look at Paige, confused.
Paige looks at Aubrey, throwing a pillow at her, “I was waiting for the right moment!” She says. Aubrey flees the room, not wanting to be victim to any more pillows.
“What does she mean, baby?” I question.
She doesn’t respond.
I slide off of her lap, falling to the side of her, “What does she mean, Paige. “ I say, starting to get worked up.
“It’s nothing important, Princess, I promise,” she says in a soothing voice, reaching for my hand. I swat her away, scooting further from her.
“Tell me then.”
“Princess-“
“No secrets, Paige.”
“You know the story I told you? About the first night?” I nod. “I’ve been giving you vitamins every couple of days; you need them as a booster. You can go a couple of weeks without them, but-“ She babbles on. “Get to the point.”
“Right, well, they were supposed to give supplies every couple of months, but after they realized you found out, they pulled the supplies. They are currently trying to track us down to destroy the supply I still have and to take me back.” She says.
I don’t know how to respond, and she doesn’t push for a response. She grabs my hand, pulling me into her. Once I’m close enough, she pulls me back onto her lap, facing her once again. She tightly wraps her arms around my waist and looks up into my eyes, which are starting to tear up.
“It’s gonna be okay, I promise. We just need to hide out for a few days; they will stop searching for us eventually, and we will figure something out with the pills, okay. Don’t cry, princess. I hate watching you cry.” She says, wiping tears off my face.
“We have enough supplies for at least 6 months, if we give you one per week. That’s plenty of time to find more.”
“What if they take you?” I ask my voice quivering.
“You know what happens,” She whispers, making my tears flow even more.
KK, Aubs, and Caroline walk into the room, interrupting. “Guys, we gotta go, like now,” KK announces.
“Kinda busy here, KK. Why do we need to leave?”
“They are outside, the owners are distracting them, but they won’t be able to much longer.”
Paige groans before turning her attention back to me. “Do you want me to carry you?” She asks gently, and I nod, leaning my head into the crook of her neck.
She slowly stands from the bed, being careful not to drop me.
Next thing I know, we are outside the car, she opens the back seat door, and lets go of my legs, which she was supporting with her other hand. “Can you let go for a second? I have to do something; you can stay here with Aubrey.” She says, tugging at my arms wrapped around her neck.
“Do you have to go? Why can’t I go with you?” I question.
“Yes, I do, but I promise I’ll be back in a few minutes, and you don’t want to trust me.”
I reluctantly let go of her neck, falling into the backseat next to Aubrey. Paige walks back into the building after locking the door.
“What is she doing?” I ask Aubrey.
“They didn’t tell me.” She says, slightly frustrated, I can tell she’s telling the truth.
A few minutes go by, and KK comes running out to the car…alone? She mouths “Unlock the door,” and I quickly open it for her to get in.
“Where is she?” I ask, slightly worried.
“Her dumbass fought them, and now they are chasing me,” KK replies.
“Is she okay?” I ask fear intruding into my brain.
KK looks afraid to answer, which is enough of an answer for me. “Let me out of the car,” I say to KK, asking her to get out so I can exit.
“She explicitly told me not to do that,” KK says, making me groan in frustration.
“Let me out of the fucking car, Kamorea!” I shout, but as soon as I do, I see my girlfriend limping away from the building as fast as she can, with Caroline following behind her.
“Get in the front, KK,” I say, making her groan as she gets out of the car. She leaves the door open for Paige.
Paige quickly scurries into the seat next to me, grabbing at her leg. Caroline gets in the front seat and begins driving.
“What happened, baby?” I ask, touching her thigh, making her wince in pain.
“Nothing, don’t worry about that, I got you a couple more bottles.” She says, handing them to me.
“I am worried. What happened?” I say not letting her brush off the topic.
“It’s nothing, Princess.” She says, insisting.
I turn away from her, annoyed.
“How about you take a pill, hmm? I have some water.” She says, gently grabbing my hand.
I only hum in response.
“Not this silent treatment shit again.”
“Not this secrets shit again,” I reply.
That shuts her up.
“Just take one, okay?”
She says bringing a bottle of water to my lips. I push it away, refusing. “I don’t take food from people who keep secrets.”
“They stabbed my thigh, it was only a small cut, it just hurts.”
I grab her leg gently, she winces, I bring it closer to me, turning it outwards. There it is, the cut bleeding still.
“You could have just told me that, Paige.”
“Didn’t want to worry you. Now drink.” She commands.
I take a sip of the bottle she holds to my lips, and she pops the pill in my mouth for me, and I swallow it down.
“wasn’t that hard, hmm?”
I roll my eyes.
“You’re both so gay,” Aubrey says, reminding us of her presence.
“You haven’t even seen the half of it.” Paige jokes.
