Chapter 44

The glow of the phone screen lit up your bedroom. Dani’s face filling it with her familiar grin. She was curled up in a hotel bed somewhere in New York, hair damp from the post-show shower, her voice warm and teasing.

“Show was insane tonight,” Dani said, her eyes sparkling. “The crowd was loud as hell. I swear my ears are still ringing.”

You smiled, adjusting your pillow. “Good ringing or bad ringing?”

“Good,” Dani laughed. “The kind that makes you feel alive.”

You talked like you did every night – Dani asking about your day at work, you asking about the set-list, Dani teasing you about missing out on tour chaos. It was comfortable, routine, the kind of conversation that stitched the distance together.

“What did you eat today?” You asked, smirking.

“Uh…” Dani frowned, pretending to think. “Coffee. A protein bar. And… fries backstage.”

You groaned.” That’s not a meal.”

“It’s tour life,” Dani said, grinning.” I’ll survive.”

“You’re impossible.”

“And you love it,” Dani teased, her grin softening.

The conversation drifted into laughter, Dani recounting a moment from the show where Sophia nearly tripped on stage, you telling her about your coworker’s ridiculous outfit. You teased, you laughed, you filled the gap between you with words.

“Three weeks feels like forever,” Dani admitted softly, her grin fading into something tender. “I miss you.”

Your chest tightened, but you kept your voice light. “I miss you too.”

You talked until Dani’s eyelids grew heavy, until you whispered goodnight and promised to call tomorrow. Dani drifted off not knowing tomorrow wouldn’t be another face-time – it would be the surprise of her life.

*

Your flight to New York was early, the kind of bleary-eyed morning where excitement outweighed exhaustion. The other Katseye girls knew – Sophia had squealed when you told her, Lara had promised to keep Dani distracted, Megan had winked knowingly. They were in on it, but Dani was blissfully unaware.

By evening, you were tucked into the family section of the arena, surrounded by parents, siblings and friends. The energy was electric – the crowd buzzing, the stage glowing, the anticipation thick in the air.

Katseye stormed the stage with their usual fire. Dani front and centre, her voice strong, her movements sharp. Your heart raced watching her, every lyric, every smile, every laugh sending warmth through your chest.

The set-list was stacked, each song hitting harder than the last. When Gnarly started, the crowd erupted, the bass shaking the floor. Dani’s dancing was sharp, powerful, every move commanding the stage. Your eyes were glued to her, singing along, your voice lost in the roar of the arena.

“She’s insane,” you whispered to yourself, smiling.

Then came Gabriela, the lights softer, the choreography fluid. Dani’s voice soared, her movements graceful, her smile radiant. You sang along again, your heart pounding, your eyes never leaving Dani. Every lyric felt personal, every glance toward the crowd making you ache to be seen.

The set built toward the finale, the crowd roaring as the opening notes of My Way filled the arena. Dani’s voice soared, the girls harmonising, the lights flashing. You sang along, smiling, your eyes locked on Dani.

At first, Dani didn’t notice. She was lost in the performance, in the rhythm, in the crowd. But then – mid-chorus – her gaze swept the family section. Her eyes landed on you.

She froze for a beat, her jaw dropping, her grin exploding across her face. Shock, joy, disbelief – all at once. She kept singing, but her eyes didn’t leave you.

You sang along cutely, smiling back, your heart pounding. Dani’s grin widened, her voice brighter, her energy sharper. The other girls noticed too, exchanging quick smirks, but they kept the performance rolling.

The song ended with the girls lowered beneath the stage, the crowd screaming. Dani disappeared from view, but you know what was coming.

*

The green room buzzed with family and friends congratulating the girls. You waited, nerves and excitement tangled in your chest.

And then Dani burst in.

She spotted you instantly, her eyes welling up, her grin breaking into something raw and emotional. “Y/N!” She cried, running across the room.

You barely had time to open your arms before Dani collided with you. You lifted her up off the ground, spinning her in a tight hug as she buried her face against your neck. Dani clung to you, laughing and crying all at once.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” Dani whispered, her voice trembling. “I missed you so fucking much.”

You held her just as tightly, tears pricking your eyes. “I missed you too. Three weeks felt like forever.”

You kissed, soft and desperate, the kind of kiss that made up for every day apart. Dani cupped your face, laughing through tears. “You’re insane. You flew all the way here?”

You grinned. “Surprise.”

She kissed you again, longer this time, her body pressed close, her laughter spilling between kisses. “Best surprise ever.”

You stayed tangled together, Dani refusing to let go, whispering how much she’d missed your laugh, your touch, your presence. You kissed her forehead, her cheeks, her lips, soaking in every second.

*

Later that night, the chaos of the show faded into quiet. Dani tugged you through the hotel hallway, her hand tight in yours, her grin wicked.

“You know what this means right?” Dani whispered, her voice low and teasing.

You smirked. “What?”

“Fun night.” Dani said, her eyes sparkling. “I haven’t seen you in three weeks. You’re not leaving my side.”

You laughed. “Clingy much?”

“Clingy as hell,” Dani admitted, pressing her lips to yours quickly before dragging you toward the door. “You’re mine tonight. All mine.”

You groaned, laughing against her lips. “You’re ridiculous.”

“And you love it,” Dani whispered, kissing you again, deeper this time.

The hotel room door clicked shut behind you, Dani pulling you inside with a mischievous grin. She wrapped her arms around your neck, refusing to let go, whispering cheeky promises about how the night was going to make up for every second apart.

“Three weeks without you was torture,” Dani muttered, kissing you again. “So I’m not letting you sleep. Not yet.”

You laughed breathlessly, kissing her back. “You’re insane.”

“Insanely obsessed,” Dani corrected, her grin wicked. “Now come here.”

The night stretched ahead, full of laughter, kisses, and the kind of reunion only three weeks apart could ignite.
