Chapter 3
“Beautiful,” Sarah quietly corrected, softly kissing her fiancé’.
Rain wanted to sit next to the window. Unfortunately, it was an overcast day so she only saw the tops of fluffy grayish white clouds. And that only kept her quiet for two and a half minutes. Then she demanded to know why they were flying to, where, where in the hell was Tutite anyway? And what was in Tutite?
After their Eleven hour flight thanks to a two hour layover in Fletcher, Maine, Sarah was ready to kill her fiancé’. Stepping off of the airplane at Tutite Airfield, Rain screamed in outrage; it was minus twelve degrees and snow and ice was everywhere.
“No, no, that’s Celsius; they do their degrees in Celsius,” Sarah stated, hoping Rain would not figure out that minus twelve degrees Celsius was still quite cold.
“Snow? Snow? We, We’re spending our Valentine’s Day in snow?” Rain demanded. “Celcius or not, that’s snow Sarah.”
Sarah bustled Rain into the stifling heat of the airport and approached the counter. The young man spoke passable English and agreed that the next boat would be along in thirty minutes. It took all of Sarah’s strength and determination to drag Rain from the warmth of the airport to the dock. The fifty four minute boat ride from Tutite airport to the island of Nysol softened Sarah’s homicidal resolve; both she and Rain were horribly seasick from the North Sea’s rough waves.
The lodge was very warm and the hostess very welcoming. She smiled an understanding smile and fixed both women some soothing mugs of tea guaranteed to soothe their tummies.
Rain yawned deeply halfway through her mug. Sarah soon yawned as well. With a chuckle, the hostess led them to their room and bade them a good evening.
Whatever was in the tea did the trick; Rain was very revived by the first rays of morning. Sarah felt much refreshed after their hearty breakfast and urged Rain to hurry; their ceremony was in two hours.
“Cer, what ceremony?” Rain asked, dutifully following Sarah to their room once more.
The hike up the side of the volcano renewed Sarah’s resolve to kill Rain. How was she to know Rain did not like heights?
“Now, why’d we come all this way?” Rain demanded as they stood on a natural rock ledge just inside the lip of the volcano.
“Our wedding,” Sarah smiled, beginning to wiggle out of the warm winter clothing.
“Welcome! Welcome to the altar of Freyr, our Nordic ancestor,” Ilsa intoned as she and Heidi approached the two women. “We are the daughters Hnoss and Gersemi.”
“Sarah!” Heidi squealed, recognizing Sarah.
Rain stood, mouth open in shock as the two blonde beauties emerged from a large lava tube, fully nude except for flowers woven through their long blonde hair. She recognized that the blonde on the left was pregnant and the blonde on the right had obviously borne a child quite recently; she bore the slight scarring on her flat belly. Her light green eyes opened even wider as the pregnant blonde squealed her fiancé’s name and ran to hug Sarah. The other blonde also ran to embrace Sarah.
“Rain,” Sarah laughed happily, disentangling herself from the hugs and kisses of Heidi and Ilsa. “This, this is Ilsa and her sister Heidi. Ilsa? Heidi? This, this is Rainbow Larsen, my fiancé’.”
“Oh!” both blondes sighed, approaching Rain with outstretched arms.
“These, these were your friends?” Rain asked as the two nude women embraced her.
“Yes!” Sarah giggled happily, now nude as well. “Come on, come on; you’re holding everything up.”
“Come; the ceremony is about to begin,” Heidi smiled, urging Rain to undress.
“Who comes to the altar of…” Ronnie intoned, entering the flat ledge from his own grotto. “…Sarah? I, oh, oh my God!”
“Hey,” Sarah giggled happily, hugging and kissing the Nordic priest. Rain, this is Ronnie Reischman. Ronnie, this is…”
“I am the reincarnated Freyr,” Ronnie smiled as he embraced Sarah.
Disrobing, Rain hid behind Sarah. Gently, Heidi pulled Rain to stand by Sarah. She whispered into Rain’s ear that she should always stand by her partner, never be subservient to her partner.
“You, you’re right,” Rain agreed as Ronnie began the most sacred Nordic Unification ceremony.
He spoke in an odd language, mostly old Germanic. When Rain or Sarah was to respond, Ilsa or Heidi coached them on what to say, what to do.
“Reach. Reach into the bag,” Ilsa instructed Rain as Ronnie held out a black cloth bag. “Pull out hmm, three. Three runes. The stones will tell of your future with your chosen mate.”
Rain stepped forward, reached into the bag and dug around. She pulled three stones from the bag and attempted to make sense of what the markings might mean.
“Two. You pulled out two runes that mark that you shall bear two children for your partner,” Ronnie stated. The third rune shows that you will be the strength of the home.”
Sarah made eye contact with Ilsa. Ilsa smirked, seeing the amusement in Sarah’s eyes. Sarah gave Ilsa an almost imperceptible shake of her head; she knew that the flighty, beautiful Rain would not be the strength of the home.
Sarah’s runes showed that she would bear one child and would be the fierce warrior and protector of the home. Ronnie also stated that Sarah would be forgiving toward her spouse.
“Uh? In other words, I might not kill her if she gets knocked up?” Sarah thought, smiling at Rain.
“This, this is really happening, isn’t it?” Rain gushed, peering deeply into Sarah’s eyes. “I, we, we’re really getting married! And on Valentine’s Day!”
“Yes, my beautiful, sweet Rainbow, we are. We really are getting married,” Sarah laughed at Rain’s enthusiasm.
The changes were subtle but they were there. Sarah noticed that Rain was ready to leave for work on time; that Sunni’s diaper bag was fully packed and ready for the on-site day care.
On arriving home from their day at the office, Sarah noticed that Rain was quick to enter the kitchen, begin preparing their evening meal, rather than suggesting that they call House of the Dragon or Brick’s Pizzeria for delivery. Sarah noticed that Rain was researching menus, recipes for healthier foods. She was shopping at Nature’s Peak, the vegan grocery store on the ground level of their building. Thankfully, Rain did not remove all red meat from their diet; that would have been grounds for divorce.
Rain was also quick to get up should Sunni cry in the night. It was Rain that changed the diapers, even the stinky ones. Bath time was no longer relegated to Sarah. Instead, Rain invited Sarah to join her and Sunni as Rain bathed the child.
“I like this new Rain,” Sarah thought as she slowly, softly began light foreplay with her wife.
“I love this new Rain,” Sarah thought as Rain responded quickly to Sarah’s touches and kisses.
“I knew it. I knew it wouldn’t last,” Sarah thought as Rain claimed fatigue; could they order something from Brick’s? Or some delicious Cajun food from Boudreaux’s?
She also had no appetite. Her weight loss was noticeable. Rain even shied away from her beloved caramel Frappuccino.
“That’s it. I’m calling and getting you an appointment,” Sarah said when Rain called in sick for the fourth day in a row.
“I, I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” Rain sobbed out; her limbs and joints ached.
“You don’t have fever,” Sarah mused, feeling Rain’s forehead.
Because of their excellent medical plan through O’Malley Accounting, Rain was able to see a doctor quickly. Tests were performed and Dr. Silverstein grimly told the two women the harsh truth.
“Oh my God!” Sarah realized as she bathed the weak Rain. “It’s true; she, she did give me two children.”
“I, I’m so sorry,” Rain sobbed as Sarah helped her put a diaper on.
“And I forgive you,” Sarah thought as she lay the sobbing Rain on the hospital bed in their bedroom. “I forgive every little inconvenience, every little change I’ve had to make. Because I love you.”
Sunni was walking, running really, and talking. The beautiful little girl called Sarah ‘Mommy’ and Sarah did not correct the girl’s mistake.
“Mommy?” Rain whispered on February thirteenth. “Tomorrow, tomorrow’s our anniversary.”
“It sure is,” Sarah agreed, tears in her eyes. “What would you like for our anniversary, my beautiful Rain?”
“A hundred more anniversaries with you,” Rain smiled softly and closed her eyes.
