Chapter 47

They didn’t plan it.

It just… happened.

One second, they were walking off the field, fingers laced together, still buzzing from the adrenaline and the weight of everything they’d finally said out loud. The next, Rowan was unlocking her car without really thinking, Lila leaning against the passenger door like she’d always belonged there.

“Where are we going?” Lila asked lightly as she slid into the seat.

Rowan glanced over, smiling. “I don’t know. Home?”

Lila’s brows lifted. “Your home or mine?”

Rowan hesitated for half a beat, then said, “Mine. If that’s okay.”

Lila’s smile softened. “Yeah. That’s more than okay.”

The drive was quiet in the best way. Music played low, something familiar neither of them bothered to change. Rowan rested her hand on the center console, not quite touching, and Lila slowly curled her fingers around it like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Rowan felt it again, that pull. The one she’d felt for so long before she ever let herself name it.

When they pulled into the driveway, the house was dark except for the porch light. Rowan’s parents were out, which she knew because the house had that still, untouched feeling like it was waiting.

“Unexpected detour,” Lila said as they stepped inside, slipping off her shoes.

Rowan laughed softly. “Yeah. Guess so.”

The door clicked shut behind them, and suddenly it felt quieter than the field ever had. No crowd. No teammates. Just them.

Lila wandered into the living room, looking around with an amused expression. “I’ve been here so many times,” she said. “And it feels different now.”

Rowan leaned against the doorway. “Different how?”

“Like… I don’t have to pretend I’m just your friend anymore,” Lila said gently.

Something warm bloomed in Rowan’s chest.

They dropped onto the couch together; legs tangled without effort. Rowan kicked off her cleats, groaning dramatically.

“Ugh. Soccer feet. I’m sorry in advance.”

Lila laughed, scrunching her nose. “I survived worse.”

Rowan glanced at her. “Worse?”

Lila smirked. “Remember sophomore year when you made me sit through that three-hour team fundraiser meeting?”

Rowan groaned louder. “Oh my god. I owe you for that.”

“You bought me fries after,” Lila said. “I considered us even.”

Rowan smiled at the memory, then stilled slightly as another one surfaced. “You always stayed,” she said quietly.

Lila looked at her. “Stayed?”

“Like… even when you didn’t have to,” Rowan said. “You were always there. Practices. Games. Dumb meetings. I thought you just liked supporting people.”

Lila tilted her head. “I did.”

Rowan met her eyes. “You just… liked me more.”

Lila didn’t deny it.

They sat there for a moment, letting the realization settle, the hindsight suddenly so obvious it was almost funny.

“Remember when you got injured junior year?” Lila said softly.

Rowan snorted. “How could I forget? Worst week of my life.”

“You pretended you were fine,” Lila said. “But you wouldn’t let anyone help you except me.”

Rowan frowned slightly. “I didn’t even notice that.”

Lila smiled, small and fond. “I did.”

Rowan shifted closer. “You used to bring me my homework.”

“And your favorite candy,” Lila added. “Even though you never asked.”

Rowan laughed quietly, shaking her head. “You were flirting with me.”

“I was absolutely flirting with you,” Lila said. “You were just oblivious.”

Rowan covered her face with one hand. “That tracks.”

Lila reached up, gently pulling Rowan’s hand away. “I think part of you knew, though.”

Rowan looked at her. “Yeah?”

“I think you felt it,” Lila said. “That pull. You just didn’t know what to do with it yet.”

Rowan swallowed. “I was scared.”

“I know,” Lila said softly. “But you still kept coming back to me.”

Rowan’s heart squeezed. “I always felt safer around you. Even before I knew why.”

Lila’s eyes shone. “Me too.”

They leaned into each other then, foreheads touching, the moment quiet and unhurried. Rowan pressed a kiss to Lila’s temple, slow, reverent.

“I keep thinking about all the almosts,” Rowan admitted. “All the times I stopped myself.”

Lila smiled gently. “But you didn’t stop yourself tonight.”

Rowan exhaled, resting her head against Lila’s shoulder. “I don’t want to anymore.”

Lila wrapped her arms around her, holding her close. “Good.”

They stayed like that, curled together on the couch, trading memories like confessions, late-night texts that meant more than they admitted, glances held too long, the way their hands always seemed to find each other in crowds.

At some point, Rowan laughed softly and said, “We were so obvious.”

Lila laughed too. “Painfully.”

Rowan kissed her again, sweet, unhurried, full of everything they’d been circling for years.

This time, there was no fear chasing the moment.

Just comfort.
Just warmth.
Just the quiet certainty that they’d been finding their way back to each other all along.
