Chapter 41

The New World ocean was a beast of its own, shifting from calm waters to boiling whirlpools in minutes. But for the next month, this unpredictable sea would be their dojo.

The Clockwork Rose sailed alongside the Thousand Sunny and Law’s submarine, the Polar Tang. A rope bridge had been rigged between the ships, allowing the crews to mingle—mostly because Luffy kept stretching over to steal Carmen’s food, and Law kept coming over to check Kurumi’s vitals.

On the deck of the Rose, the air was filled with the sounds of violence and progress.

The Laboratory of Madness

Deep in the reinforced galley, Caesar Clown was cackling nervously. He was mixing a bubbling purple solution in a centrifuge made from a modified rice cooker.

"More stability!" Kurumi ordered, sitting on the counter, her arm hooked up to an IV drip. "If this 'SAD-Serum' explodes, I'll rewind your age until you're a zygote."

"Shurorororo! You monster!" Caesar poured a glowing green liquid into the mix. "This is highly experimental! It tricks your mitochondria into a hyper-metabolic state! You'll burn calories like a furnace, but your cells won't age! It's basically liquid cancer!"

"Perfect," Kurumi injected the serum into her arm.

Her veins glowed gold for a second. The exhaustion that had plagued her since the fight with Vergo vanished. Her Clock Eye ticked rhythmically, no longer stuttering.

"Capacity restored to 40%," she flexed her hand. "Good work, Clown. Now, make more. I need enough to stop time for ten seconds."

The Sniper's Horizon

High in the rigging, Laki was blindfolded.

"Pull!"

Perona released five ghosts. They moved erratically, phasing in and out of the material plane.

Laki didn't use her eyes. She used Mantra.

Mosa Mosa: Split Shot.

She fired one bullet. Mid-air, she multiplied it into five. Each bullet curved, tracking the spiritual pressure of the ghosts.

Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop.

"Hey! That stings!" Perona rubbed her ghostly head. "Stop hitting me with Haki pellets!"

"Stop moving so slowly," Laki smirked, lowering her rifle. "If I can hit a ghost, I can hit a flamingo."

The Samurai's Lesson

On the main deck, a different kind of training was happening.

Carmen, the Flamenco Chef, was panting, her skin glowing a dull red. Opposite her stood Kin'emon, the Foxfire Samurai. He had hopped over from the Sunny to escape Sanji’s cooking (which he claimed was "too French" for a warrior's palate).

"Your heat is impressive, woman," Kin'emon sheathed his katana. "But it is wild. Unfocused. You burn the air, the ground, and yourself."

"I'm a pressure cooker, not a candle!" Carmen snapped, wiping sweat from her brow. "I melt things. That's my style."

"Melting is brute force," Kin'emon lectured, adjusting his topknot. "A true master of fire cuts the flame. He commands it."

Kurumi walked out onto the deck, her new energy humming under her skin. She watched the interaction.

"Kin'emon-san," Kurumi called out.

The samurai stiffened. "Commander Kurumi. Your presence is… intimidating."

"You're a master of the Kitsunebi-ryu (Foxfire Style)," Kurumi walked down the stairs. "You can cut fire. You can generate fire. And most importantly… you can burn inside a target without scorching the skin."

She looked at Carmen.

"My cook needs to learn that. Her Atsu Atsu no Mi is powerful, but against Logias like Kuzan or Akainu, external heat fails. She needs to learn to project heat internally. Like Ryou."

Kin'emon frowned. "Ryou? That is the Wano term for Haki. It is not easily taught."

"We have a month," Kurumi crossed her arms. "And I have a proposition. What's in it for you, Samurai guy?"

Kin'emon looked at the sea. "I must save my son, Momonosuke. And my comrade, Kanjuro. And Lord Oden's dream…"

"Sentimental," Kurumi cut him off. "Let's talk practical. Doflamingo has a 'Birdcage'. It's made of strings so sharp they cut meteors. Can you cut those strings, Kin'emon?"

Kin'emon hesitated. "I… do not know."

"Exactly," Kurumi stepped closer. "If you train my cook to control her fire… I will teach you how to cut the uncuttable. I know the weakness of Doflamingo's threads. And I know where your friend Kanjuro is being held."

Kin'emon’s eyes widened. "You know where Kanjuro is?!"

"Dressrosa. The Underground Scrap Heap," Kurumi lied (partially—he was actually in the toy house, but close enough). "Teach Carmen the Foxfire Style. And I guarantee you’ll leave Dressrosa with your family intact."

Kin'emon drew his sword. His face was set in stone.

"Very well, Witch of Time. If this woman has the spirit of a warrior, I will teach her to burn the heavens."

The Duel of Heat

"Alright, top-knot," Carmen cracked her knuckles, her hands igniting. "Show me this 'Foxfire'."

Kin'emon didn't move. He held his sword low.

"Lesson one," Kin'emon whispered. "Fire is not anger. Fire is breath."

Carmen charged. 10,000 Degree Punch!

Kin'emon swung. Kitsunebi-ryu: Homura Saki (Flame Split).

He didn't block the punch. He cut the heat wave itself. Carmen’s fire split in two, passing harmlessly around him.

"What?!" Carmen gasped.

"You push the heat out," Kin'emon tapped her forehead with his hilt. "Keep it in. Let it cook your blood. Then… release it only at the point of impact."

One Month Later

The training was grueling.

Carmen learned to condense her heat into a blade-like focus, mimicking the Foxfire style with her bare hands.

Laki learned to shoot curve bullets that defied physics.

Perona learned to act as a living radar, extending her range to 50 miles.

And Kurumi…

Kurumi stood at the bow of the Clockwork Rose. The serum coursed through her. She felt dangerous. She felt ready.

"Land ho!" Perona shouted from above.

Through the mist, the jagged rocks of Dressrosa appeared. The island of passion. The island of toys.

"It’s time," Kurumi adjusted her gloves. "Kin'emon, get back to the Sunny. Stick to the plan. Luffy enters the tournament. Law goes to Green Bit."

"And you?" Kin'emon asked, jumping onto the railing.

"Me?" Kurumi smiled, her clock eye ticking toward midnight.

"I'm going to have a chat with a blind admiral."

Next Stop: Dressrosa.
