Chapter 11
The return to Water 7 was quiet compared to the chaos of the Buster Call.
Kurumi had transferred custody of the giants, Oimo and Kashii, to a secure prison convoy midway to Impel Down. Her report claimed "urgent structural damage" to her own ship, necessitating a return to the shipyards of Water 7.
In reality, she just didn't want to miss the show.
She stood on the dock, her uniform pristine despite the battles of the last few days. Her rank insignia had been updated. Commander. The World Government, desperate for a win after the humiliation of Enies Lobby, had latched onto her "capture of the traitor giants" as a major victory.
"Commander Kurumi," a nervous ensign approached. "Vice Admiral Garp's ship has arrived. He… uh… he demands to see the Straw Hats immediately."
Kurumi looked at the massive ship with the dog figurehead dominating the harbor. "The Hero of the Marines," she mused. "Finally."
"I will escort him," she said, adjusting her gloves. "I know where they are hiding."
The Wall Breaker
The Galley-La Company headquarters was serving as a makeshift hospital for the pirates. It was supposed to be a safe house.
CRASH!
The brick wall exploded inward. Dust and debris filled the room where Monkey D. Luffy was sleeping while eating.
"WAKE UP!"
A fist, devoid of Haki but heavy with "love," slammed into Luffy’s rubber head.
"GYAAAH! IT HURTS!" Luffy screamed, clutching his head.
"It hurts because it's love!" The massive, broad-shouldered man in the dog mask laughed, stepping through the hole he had just made. Behind him, two young officers—Coby and Helmeppo—looked embarrassed.
And behind them, stepping through the rubble with the grace of a ballroom dancer, was Kurumi.
"Vice Admiral," Kurumi said, her voice cutting through the noise like a silver bell. "There is a door, you know."
Garp pulled off his dog mask, revealing his gray hair and manic grin. "Bwahahaha! Doors are for people who have time to waste! You must be that Kurumi girl Sengoku won't shut up about!"
He looked her up and down. To anyone else, it was a casual glance. To Kurumi, it felt like being scanned by a predator.
"You're small," Garp stated bluntly.
"And you are loud," Kurumi replied with a polite curtsy, her mismatched eyes unblinking.
The room went silent. Sanji and Chopper, who were tending to Zoro, froze. A Commander talking back to Garp?
Garp stared at her for a second, then burst out laughing. "BWAHAHAHA! I like her! She’s got guts! Coby, take notes!"
The Reunion
As Luffy and Garp began their chaotic family reunion—revealing Dragon as Luffy’s father, shocking the entire room—Kurumi leaned against the unbroken wall, observing.
She watched Coby. The pink-haired boy had changed. He was taller, stronger. She could feel his Haki—it was raw, unrefined, but it was there.
"You're staring," a voice said.
Kurumi shifted her gaze. Helmeppo, holding his kukri knives, was eyeing her warily.
"I am merely assessing the future of the Navy," Kurumi smiled. "You two are Garp's protégés. I expected… more."
"What did you say?!" Helmeppo bristled.
"Easy, Helmeppo," Coby interrupted, stepping forward. He looked at Kurumi with serious eyes. "You're the one who fought Luffy at the gate, aren't you? The one who took down the giants."
"I did my duty," Kurumi said smoothly. "Unlike some, who let emotions cloud their judgment."
She glanced meaningfully at Luffy, who was currently getting put in a headlock by Garp.
The Test
"Hey! You!"
Garp suddenly turned, dropping Luffy. He pointed a massive finger at Kurumi.
"Sengoku says you're a prodigy. Says you use some weird fighting style." Garp grinned, cracking his knuckles. "Show me."
"Here?" Kurumi asked, raising an eyebrow. "We are in a hospital, Vice Admiral."
"Bwahaha! A little spar never hurt anyone! Coby! Helmeppo! Two on one! Take her down!"
"EH?!" Coby and Helmeppo shouted in unison.
"Now!" Garp roared.
Coby moved instantly. Soru.
He was fast. Much faster than the average Marine. He appeared behind Kurumi, aiming a chop at her neck.
Kurumi didn't turn. She tilted her head to the left. Coby’s hand whiffed through the space where her neck had been.
Helmeppo.
The blond officer swung his kukri knives low, aiming to trip her.
Kurumi jumped, pushing off Coby’s extended arm like a springboard. She flipped in the air, her dress fluttering, and landed on the ceiling—holding herself there with Geppo (Moonwalk) steps against the rafters.
"Impressive coordination," Kurumi noted from above. "But linear."
She dropped.
Rankyaku: Rain.
She kicked the air furiously, sending a shower of small, stinging air blades down. Coby and Helmeppo were forced to dance back, deflecting the blasts.
As they looked up, she was already on the floor, right between them.
She tapped Coby’s forehead with her left index finger and Helmeppo’s chest with her right palm.
Shigan (Finger Pistol) – withheld.
"Bang," she whispered.
Both boys froze. If she had used real force, Coby would have a hole in his skull, and Helmeppo’s heart would have stopped.
"Winner!" Garp shouted, clapping his hands so hard the windows rattled. "Not bad, little girl! You move like a ghost!"
Kurumi straightened up, smoothing her skirt. She wasn't even breathing hard. "Thank you, Vice Admiral. Your students have potential. They just hesitate to kill."
The Warning
Later, as the sun set over Water 7, Kurumi stood on the balcony with Garp. The Straw Hats were inside, celebrating.
"You let them go at Enies Lobby," Garp said suddenly. His voice had lost the jovial tone. It was low, dangerous.
Kurumi didn't flinch. "I was overwhelmed. Monkey D. Luffy… he has a power that defies logic."
Garp snorted. He took a bite of a rice cracker. "Don't lie to me, girl. I can smell it. You saw something in my grandson."
He turned to look at her, his eyes serious. "You're playing a dangerous game. Whatever your ambition is… don't let it consume you. The justice of the Marines isn't always black and white."
Kurumi looked at the ocean. She thought of her goal. The Time Fruit. The power to rewrite destiny.
"I know," she said softly. "I am not looking for justice, Vice Admiral. I am looking for… time."
Garp stared at her for a long moment, then crunched his cracker. "Hmph. Weird kid. Just make sure you're on the right side when the war comes."
He walked away, leaving her alone in the twilight.
The War, Kurumi thought, a chill running down her spine. Marineford is coming. Ace is already hunting Blackbeard. The clock is ticking.
She looked at her hand. It was trembling slightly. Garp's presence alone was enough to shake her core.
"I need to be stronger," she whispered. "Moria… you're next."
