You wouldn’t have been calm either if you saw the girl you spent all day worrying about standing in front of you with wide, freaky eyes.

I screamed like a banshee.

With surprising quickness, Jennifer clamped a hand over my mouth. She put a finger up to her lips, silently ordering me to keep quiet.

I nodded in understanding and she pulled her hand from my lips.

We waited in silence for a few moments, waiting to see if my dad had woken up because of my scream.

Nothing.

I exhaled in relief. I sat down on my bed, urging Jennifer to sit next to me. Tentatively, she approached, sitting down shakily.

“Are you okay?” I whispered, still trembling from the shock. I took in her shuddering form. Clearly she was not okay. “What happened, Jen?”

“I am so hungry,” she whispered quietly, as though the confession pained her.

“Okay…” I nodded disbelievingly, not seeing why that was serious enough for her to climb into my window in the middle of the night, looking like this. “I can get you something to eat.”

I stood up but Jennifer grabbed my arm firmly, pushing me back down.

“No,” she growled, her pupils dilating. “Sit.”

I chuckled nervously. “I want to help you, Jen. You’re hungry, so I will get you a bite. I will be back before you know it, I promise.”

“No, Lils,” she hissed urgently, “I am hungry.”

The word was so simple, yet the way in which she repeated it so desperately made me rethink.

“Jen… What exactly are you hungry for?” I asked hesitantly, as if trying to tame a wild animal.

Without answering, Jennifer smirked maniacally. She crashed her lips onto mine so fast that she sent me landing on my back. Her tongue moved inside me hungrily, her hands already groping me everywhere.

Involuntarily, I moaned. So was this what she was hungry for?

Part of me was thrilled. It was extremely arousing that Jennifer had come all the way here in the middle of the night simply to see me and touch me like this. It meant that I kept her awake and restless in the same way that she kept me.

But another part of me, a tiny, sensible voice deep inside me was alarmed. It was begging me to pull away and demand answers, real answers. After all, she could not just barge in as she pleased, after having abandoned me at school that very same day.

Reluctantly, I pushed Jennifer off of me just as her hands were sliding down to the part of me that throbbed the most. I had to do this, though. I deserved not to be kept in the dark.

“Woah,” I muttered, my cheeks flushed, “this was… I mean… Woah, Jennifer… You know, I feel the same way and trust me, I really want to take the next step with you, but first, we need to talk.”

Jennifer pouted, a dark gleam flashing into her eyes before vanishing just as fast. “Fiiiine,” she whined in a sweet voice that made me want to put her down and finish what she had started. Focus, I ordered myself.

“So…” I cleared my throat, “where were you today? I was worried.”

“Oh, you know,” she twirled her hair, “just too bored to show up to school. Can’t blame a girl for taking a break, can you?”

I scoffed. Her answer was not adequate, but I had more important questions. “Fine… then what the hell possessed you to show up unannounced like this in the middle of the night? Most people don’t do that, you know, Jen.”

She scowled, as though I had told her that something completely ordinary was abnormal. “I just wanted to see you. I did not get to see you at all today and I missed you. Simple as that, Lilith.”

“Well, it is not that simple,” I retorted sharply, “it honestly freaked me out, Jen. Don’t you understand that? You, coming here in the dead of night, looking lost and rambling about being hungry is not normal. It is weird and scary.”

Now Jennifer seemed really pissed. “Well, I’m sorry, Lils. Clearly, I overestimated you. I thought we were best friends. I thought you understood me.”

She went to stand up and this time I was the one reaching out to keep her in place. “No, Jennifer, you don’t get to walk out on me like that. What were you really talking about when you said you were hungry?”

“Why is it so hard for you to believe that I meant exactly what I did? That I came all the way here because I am so fucking hungry for you?”

“Because it doesn’t make sense, Jen! If you truly care about me so much then you should have shown up to school today. You should have texted me. You should have done something normal.”

Jennifer’s face turned red. “Wow, Lil,” she chuckled drily, “seriously, if there was an award for the biggest dickhead of the year it would be all yours.”

And then she muttered something under her breath that made my heart drop.

“At least Needy understood me. I miss her.”

She faced away from me. I grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at me.

“What the actual fuck, Jen? You’re saying that a psycho killer who, need I remind you, tried to murder you, understood you better? And you fucking miss her? Are you crazy?”

She smiled just as maniacally as she had prior to pinning me down and kissing me.

“Oh, Lils,” she moved forward, “you haven’t seen crazy,” she licked her lips like a predator, “but I could show you.”

“No,” I yanked her off of me, perhaps too aggressively. She fell off the bed, groaning in pain.

Immediately, I regretted what I’d done. I rushed to her side. Her eyes were shut and there was blood running down the side of her head.

“Oh gosh, Jen,” I swallowed back a sob. I rushed out of my room, heading towards my dad’s. I banged on the door, crying out. “Dad! Wake up! Dad!”

After what seemed like an eternity, the door swung open. My dad stared at me as if he had seen a ghost. “Lils, what is wrong?” he asked fearfully, “are you hurt?”

“No, dad, but Jennifer is,” I sobbed, “she fell off the bed and she hit her head and she is not moving.”

“Jennifer?” my dad asked in confusion, “I must be dreaming. What the hell is Jennifer doing here in the middle of the night?”

“I don’t know, dad, it was all so sudden,” I cried violently, “but we need to help her, dad, come on.”

“Okay, okay…” my dad whispered placatingly, as if trying to soothe a child, “let’s see.”

We walked back to my room. My sobs had subsided, but I was still quaking, scared about what I might see.

My dad entered the room first. I stood in the doorway, anticipating his response, hoping to hear Jennifer’s voice.

However, when my dad approached me, he shook his head incredulously, as if I had pulled a bad prank on him.

“Lilith… Jennifer is not in your room.”
