Chapter 94

The living room was bathed in a soft amber glow from the TV, the sound of a movie playing low in the background. Jennie was curled up on one end of the couch, half-under a blanket, while Lisa lay beside her with her head resting comfortably on Jennie’s lap.

It was one of those rare quiet evenings—no schedules, no chaos, just warmth and peace.

At least… until—

“MOMMYYYYYYY!”

A tiny voice shattered the calm.

Before either of them could react, a small blur launched itself straight onto the couch.

Thump.

Jennie let out a startled “oof,” and Lisa blinked as their three-year-old daughter, Ruby, bounced directly between them like a very determined fluffy meteor.

Ruby giggled immediately, completely unbothered by the impact she just made. Her tiny hands pressed on Lisa’s chest for balance while she wiggled her way into the middle of the couch like she owned the place.

Which, honestly… she kind of did.

“Ruby,” Lisa laughed, gently steadying her, “you just attacked us.”

“No I didn’t!” Ruby declared confidently. “I hugged you… very strong.”

Jennie chuckled, brushing Ruby’s messy hair away from her forehead. “Very strong indeed. What’s going on, little miss chaos?”

Ruby paused. Her big eyes flicked between both of them seriously, as if she had come to deliver very important national news.

Then she said it.

“I wanted a baby sister.”

Silence.

The movie kept playing in the background, forgotten.

Lisa slowly turned her head toward Jennie.

Jennie slowly turned her head toward Lisa.

Ruby, meanwhile, was still sitting perfectly between them, hands folded, waiting patiently like she had just ordered something from a menu.

Lisa blinked. “You… want a what?”

“A baby sister,” Ruby repeated, nodding firmly. “So I can share my toys. And teach her things. And we can be a team.”

Jennie covered her mouth with her hand, trying not to laugh too loudly. “That’s… very thoughtful of you.”

Lisa leaned closer to Ruby, her expression softening. “Where did this come from, hmm?”

Ruby shrugged dramatically. “I saw a video. Big sister was feeding baby. It was cute.”

Jennie exhaled a quiet laugh. “Of course it was a video.”

Lisa gently poked Ruby’s cheek. “You know babies don’t just… appear because you want them, right?”

Ruby tilted her head. “Why not?”

That question hung in the air like it had just defeated both adults in one hit.

Jennie looked at Lisa again, silently saying you answer this one.

Lisa sighed, smiling. “Because it takes time, and a lot of responsibility. And also… we already have you.”

Ruby immediately frowned. “But I can share.”

“I know you can,” Jennie said softly, brushing Ruby’s cheek with her thumb. “But a baby sister isn’t like a toy you order.”

Ruby thought about this very seriously. Then she climbed a little higher onto Lisa’s lap, as if changing positions would help her argument.

“I can help,” she insisted. “I can bring diapers. I can sing lullabies. I can be a big sister pro.”

Lisa couldn’t hold it in anymore and laughed, pulling Ruby into a gentle hug. “A big sister pro, huh?”

“YES,” Ruby said proudly, muffled against Lisa’s shoulder.

Jennie reached over, tapping Ruby’s tiny nose. “You’re already our full-time job, you know that?”

Ruby gasped dramatically like she had been deeply insulted. “I am not a job!”

Lisa kissed the top of her head. “You’re right. You’re our favorite chaos.”

Ruby seemed to accept that answer, because she relaxed instantly. Then, as if her serious announcement had been successfully delivered, she snuggled closer between them.

A moment of silence returned—this time softer, warmer.

The movie continued playing, but no one was really watching it anymore.

Jennie adjusted the blanket around Ruby’s shoulders. “You really want a baby sister that much?”

Ruby nodded sleepily. “Mmhm… so I won’t be lonely when I’m busy.”

Lisa raised a brow. “Busy doing what?”

“Important things,” Ruby mumbled, already half-drifting off.

Jennie and Lisa exchanged another glance.

This time, Jennie was the one who smiled first.

“We’ll think about it,” Jennie said gently, stroking Ruby’s hair.

Lisa nodded in agreement. “Yeah. We’ll think about it… after we survive you first.”

Ruby didn’t respond.

Because she had already fallen asleep right there between them, one small hand holding onto Lisa’s shirt, the other resting on Jennie’s arm like she was making sure they couldn’t escape.

Jennie leaned her head against Lisa’s shoulder, watching their daughter’s peaceful face.

“She’s dangerous,” Jennie whispered.

Lisa smiled softly. “Yeah.”

A pause.

Then Lisa added, quieter, “But… kind of convincing.”

Jennie let out a small laugh. “Don’t start.”

Outside, the night stayed calm.

Inside, a tiny chaos-maker slept soundly between the two people who loved her most—already planning her future big sister role in her dreams.
