Chapter 134
The delivery room was still buzzing with quiet chaos—soft footsteps, the beeping monitors fading into something calmer, the kind of silence that only comes after a storm has passed.
Jennie lay back against the pillows, hair damp, breathing slow but steady. Sweat still clung to her forehead, but her eyes were already searching.
“Where… where is she?” she whispered, voice soft like she was afraid the world might break if she spoke too loud.
Lisa was right there immediately, hand squeezing hers so tightly it almost hurt. “I’m here, baby. I’m here. They’re bringing her—she’s okay, you’re okay, we’re okay.”
And then—
A tiny sound filled the room.
Not a cry. Not yet.
More like a confused little squeak of protest.
The nurse walked in first, followed by the doctor… and then both of them paused.
Just paused.
Because wrapped in a soft pink blanket was the biggest newborn any of them had ever seen.
Not in a scary way—no, nothing like that.
Just… a very round, very chunky, very calm baby girl who looked like she had been happily chilling in there for an extra bonus month.
Even the nurse blinked twice. “Oh… wow.”
The doctor adjusted their glasses. “…She’s… robust.”
Jennie’s eyes widened. “Is she okay?! Why is everyone saying wow?!”
Lisa leaned forward, staring in absolute disbelief as the nurse carefully placed the baby into Jennie’s arms.
And the moment she saw her—
Lisa froze.
The baby blinked slowly, completely unbothered by the world, cheeks like soft mochi, tiny fists tucked under her chin like she was posing for a magazine cover titled “Born Cozy.”
Lisa’s brain visibly stopped working.
Then she blurted—
“How the heck she fit on your petite body, baby?!?!?”
The nurse actually snorted. The doctor coughed to hide a laugh.
Jennie turned her head slowly toward Lisa, exhausted but already smiling. “Lisa…”
“What?! I’m serious!” Lisa pointed gently at the baby like she was presenting evidence in court. “She is HUGE for a newborn! That is not a baby, that’s a whole dumpling!”
The baby chose that exact moment to yawn—slow, dramatic, unbothered—then snuggled deeper into Jennie’s arms like she owned the place.
Jennie softened instantly. “She’s not a dumpling…”
Lisa leaned closer, squinting. “That is absolutely a dumpling.”
The nurse finally spoke, still smiling. “She’s perfectly healthy. Just… very well-fed-looking for a newborn.”
“See?” Lisa said immediately, like she had won an argument.
Jennie laughed weakly, tears forming at the corners of her eyes—not from pain anymore, but from pure disbelief and love. “I was only gone for a few hours of labor…”
Lisa gently touched the baby’s tiny hand, and the baby instinctively wrapped her finger with an iron-tight grip that made Lisa gasp.
“Oh—oh wow. Okay. She’s strong too.”
The doctor nodded. “Strong, healthy, and surprisingly calm. She barely cried.”
Lisa straightened up, dramatically placing a hand on her chest. “Of course she didn’t cry. She knows she’s too powerful for that.”
Jennie rolled her eyes fondly. “You’re already spoiling her personality.”
“I’m observing scientific facts,” Lisa said seriously, then leaned in again, softer now. “Hi, dumpling…”
Jennie nudged her. “Don’t call our daughter dumpling.”
The baby made a tiny sound, almost like she agreed.
Lisa grinned. “She didn’t complain.”
Jennie looked down at their daughter again, her expression melting completely. “She’s… perfect.”
Lisa nodded, voice quieter now. “Yeah. She is.”
For a moment, the whole room softened—the nurse stepping back, the doctor quietly finishing their checks, leaving just the three of them in the gentle hum of something new.
Lisa carefully placed a finger against the baby’s palm again.
The baby grabbed it immediately.
Lisa blinked. “Oh no.”
Jennie frowned slightly. “What?”
Lisa looked up, dead serious but smiling already. “She’s already strong enough to bully me.”
Jennie let out a tired laugh, shaking her head. “Good. She needs someone to keep you in line.”
The baby gave another tiny, satisfied sound—like she approved of that arrangement.
And Lisa, still stunned, leaned closer to Jennie and whispered:
“I think… we made the biggest, cutest trouble in the world.”
Jennie smiled, exhausted but glowing. “Our trouble.”
And in Jennie’s arms, little Ruby—soft, round, and entirely unbothered—slept like she had already decided the world belonged to her.
