Chapter 9
“I feel like we’re gonna make noise here once we finish the movie,” Lexi whispered, slowly getting a bunch of Doritos from her bag, handing me some.
I shoved the chips in my mouth, “What do you mean ‘we’? You’re most likely to make noise,”
“Dude, if I’m going down, you’re also going down,”
“I won’t let that happen”
“We’re in the library. If I get kicked out, you will too,”
“Before they could get here, I’ll hide behind those shelves,” I pointed to the bookshelves in front of us.
“You die, I die, right?”
“No. You die, and I say bye,” I reached for some chips, but she pulled the bag away from me.
“Kayla is more fun to be with than you,”
“Why don’t you go to their practice then and hang out with her?”
“And you’ll come with me and hang out with Lucy too,” She wiggled her eyebrows. I snatched the bag from her side and hit her with it. “Ouch! What’s wrong with that? You guys will hang out as friends,”
“I-” I trailed off. I thought she was teasing me and Lucy.
“What? You think I’m teasing you both?”
I didn’t answer. I fixed my eyes on the screen, the movie was still playing. We were watching Five Feet Apart.
We had a free subject today since our last subject teacher wasn’t around, and we agreed to go to the library and watch movies. We invited the two cheerleaders, but they’re having their practice right now.
“We should’ve just watched them practice,” Lexi said.
“It’s hot outside and it’s cold here plus the competition is next week, I’d rather watch it then rather than watching them practice as we sweat under the sun,” I said, fixing my glasses. We were doing our homework so I had to use my glasses.
“At least we’re there to support them during practice and the competition itself,”
“I’m not gonna go out there and let my skin burn,”
“So finicky,” She scoffed, rolling her eyes.
“Excuse me?” I gasped, raising my voice a bit.
This caught the librarian’s attention and snapped towards us. “Girls.”
We peeked down on the balcony with a sheepish smile on our face, and together we spoke, “Sorry,”
“‘I’m most likely to make a noise’, yeah right,” Lexi mocked.
“Shut up! Let’s just continue the movie, okay?” I hissed.
Sometimes people think we’re a married gay couple who bickers a lot. But that’s just us. We always bicker ever since we were little. Our parents thought that we won’t last long and even bet on us. But we proved to everyone that our bond was strong, and nothing can ever break it. Yeah, we’ve had some bad fights, but we love each other. We always understand and we always forgive each other. I think that’s the key to having a good friendship. Always understand one another and let your anger pass when you’re having an argument. It won’t do any good if you let your anger bring out the worst in you.
We got hooked into the movie and no one spoke nor moved a bit. We were just balling our eyes out because of this movie.
“Oh fuck, no!” Lexi sobbed, hugging me.
“This is just sad,” I sniffed, wiping my tears on my cheeks.
I guess we were loud, cause we got scolded again by the librarian. “Strike two, girls. One more, you’ll be kicked out of here,” She said sternly.
“I don’t get why we still need to stay quiet, the place is mostly empty,”
“There are some people still who are studying,” I reminded her.
The movie continued and we were at the end of the movie. That made us cry even more, and we were sobbing together, quietly. We had to cover our mouths, cause we didn’t really want to get kicked out.
You could say we’re a sucker for romance. Lexi and I did nothing but to watch movies all the time since we were kids. It was never a problem to us if we didn’t go outside to play or go to the mall and shop. We’ll waste all our time watching movies. And sometimes we watch the same ones over and over again.
“I enjoyed it, but I don’t like it,” Sadness clouded her features.
I had to laugh, because she’s always like that. Whenever a movie makes her cry, she doesn’t like it. She wiped her wet cheeks with her sleeves, staring at the screen before crying once again. I had to pat her back to comfort her. Then a woman stopped in her tracks, arms crossed over her chest.
“Ladies. I heard complaints downstairs about you two, crying loudly,”
“We weren’t that loud,” Lexi retorted.
“Two people came up to me, saying they heard you girls blubbering. They can’t focus on reviewing,”
“How did they even hear it from that far?” Lexi pointed out those people on the other side of the place.
“Ladies, please. I’m sorry but I’m gonna have to kick you out. Pack up your things and go,”
We followed her and cleaned up our mess and packed up our things. She was watching us, making sure that we were following. After we’re down, she escorted us downstairs, and we saw a group of people glaring at us. Figuring that they’re the ones who complained, cause they were just underneath us. Feeling embarrassed, we got out of the library fast with red cheeks. The door was slammed on our faces, making us wince.
The hallway was empty as there were few people left in the school. We saw Kayla at the end of the hallway, waving at us. She walked to us, letting out a long sigh.
“You look like crap!” I pointed out.
“Jeez, thanks for reminding me. The practice was intense!” She sighed, letting Lexi wipe her sweat.
“Wanna come over my house for today?”
“I’d love to, babe. Dad won’t be coming home due to boatloads of work.” Kayla pecked Lexi on the lips as a thankful gesture.
“Let’s go?” Lexi said.
“You guys go ahead, I just need to go to the restroom,” I announced, tossing my keys to my best friend.
They nodded and brought my backpack with them. Kayla said to look for Lucy and tell her that she’ll be coming with us. My mind thought about that girl, wondering where she was. As I got in the restroom, I was alone. Going to the middle stall, after I locked the door, the restroom door opened, two shadows came into view underneath.
“Watching those football boys will always be fun,” a girl spoke, turning on the faucet.
“Watching the cheerleaders is more fun,” A second voice said.
“Reed Ivans is so hot. Did you see the sweat dripping down his body?” Girl one said dreamily.
“Yuck. I was checking Lucy and Kayla out,”
As I heard their names, I got more intrigued and stayed to eavesdrop. I made sure that I wasn’t making any noise, but I’m sure that they know that there’s someone in here. They just didn’t care if someone heard their conversation.
“Kayla is taken if you didn’t know,” Girl one informed girl 2.
“Girl, I know she is. Maybe I have a chance with Lucy,”
“Lucy is straight.”
“That’s where you’re wrong. She is gay as fuck, let me tell you,”
“No way!” Girl one gasped.
“Yeah way. Didn’t you hear? Lucy has been hanging out with Kayla’s girlfriend’s best friend. My friend told me that she’s just hanging out with them just to get the girl,”
The moment girl 2 said that, my blood started to boil. Everything she said definitely got me pissed. There’s a part of me that believed her about the rumor.
“How did your friend even know this?”
“She heard Lucy and Olivia talking the other day,”
“Damn. I didn’t know Lucy was gay,”
“She’s like super gay. I can sense it, cause I am one. My gay self can sense if someone is straight or not. I bet the person in there is also gay,”
“Excuse me?!” I snapped.
“Oh shit, we gotta go!” Girl 1 said.
I heard them stomping and opening the door. But as I got out of the stall, they were gone. I searched for them outside and there’s no sign of them.
But a girl caught my eyes. When she saw me, she flashed a smile and waved at me. Instead of waving back, I clenched my jaw and walked the other way. I sent her a hard glare and I’m sure that stopped her from approaching me.
