Chapter 4

Caitlin Clark’s apartment was alive with laughter and the clinking of glasses as she and her teammates celebrated their recent win against the Connecticut Sun. Lexie Hull, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell , and Syd Colson were sprawled across Caitlin’s couch, exchanging stories and reliving the highlights of the game. Caitlin, sitting on the floor with her back against the coffee table, felt a rare sense of contentment.

“Yo, Cait,” Syd said, her eyes glued to her phone as she scrolled through the latest sports news. “You’re all over ESPN.”

Caitlin looked up. “Yeah? What are they saying now?”

“It’s your interview,” Syd replied, stopping to read. “Damn, this is good. Yo, Lexie, Aliyah, Kelsey, y’all gotta come read this article about the interview our rookie did!”

Intrigued, the rest of the team abandoned their snacks and gathered around Syd. They peered over her shoulder as she held up her phone, the headline catching their attention: “Inside the Mind of Caitlin Clark: A Star on the Rise” by Sienna Callaway.

“Dang, Cait,” Kelsey said, leaning in closer. “This is a solid interview. Whoever wrote this knows how to make you look good.”

Meanwhile, Caitlin pulled out her phone, her curiosity getting the better of her. She found the article quickly and began reading. Sienna’s words flowed effortlessly, painting a picture of Caitlin’s journey, achievements, and personality. The article was honest, respectful, and undeniably well-written.

Wow, Caitlin thought, her heart skipping a beat. Sienna’s writing is so beautiful and so truthful. She really captured everything perfectly. Her thoughts wandered, unbidden, to the journalist herself. God, I really want to see her again. Wait… do I have a crush on a journalist? No… no, that’s crazy. Journalists are trouble. Besides, I have Connor. It would hurt his feelings if-

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard Lexie exclaim, “Written by Sienna Callaway. Wait, why does Callaway sound familiar?”

Caitlin’s head snapped toward her teammate. “What do you mean, why does Callaway sound familiar? There are plenty of Callaways in America,” she said, trying to sound casual but feeling a flicker of unease.

Lexie frowned, deep in thought. “Yeah, you’re probably right, Cait. Still, it’s a big name. I swear I’ve heard it somewhere before.”

Before anyone could pursue the topic further, Syd’s voice cut through the room, loud and incredulous. “Holy shit, guys. She’s the child of a literal legend-Jake Callaway! He played for the NBA and was on the New York Knicks.”

Lexie’s eyes lit up with excitement. “See? I knew that last name sounded familiar! Jake Callaway was amazing! And he played for the Stanford Cardinals before going pro.”

Caitlin processed the revelation in stunned silence. Sienna wasn’t just a journalist-she was the daughter of one of the greatest players in NBA history. It added a new layer to the intrigue she already felt.

Turning to Syd, she asked, “Does your Google search say which university she went to?”Caitlin asked, her voice betraying her curiosity.

“Yeah,” Syd said with a grin.”She went to Stanford. Like father, like daughter, I guess.”

Caitlin turned to Lexie. “Lex, did you ever see her on campus before you left?”

Lexie raised an eyebrow, considering the question. “No, I didn’t. I didn’t even know she existed. But if you’re that curious, why don’t you ask Cameron about her? Cam might know Sienna Callaway.”

Caitlin nodded slowly, filing the idea away for later. Calling Cameron Brink could give her more insight into Sienna’s mysterious past.

But before she could say anything else, Caitlin noticed her teammates exchanging smirks and wiggling their eyebrows at her.

“What?” Caitlin asked, narrowing her eyes.

“Oh, nothing,” Aliyah said, her voice dripping with faux innocence. “Just… you seem awfully interested in this journalist.”

“Yeah,” Kelsey chimed in. “First-name basis already, huh?”

Lexie giggled. “And don’t think we didn’t notice how you’re still blushing, Cait.”

Caitlin groaned, rolling her eyes. “Y’all are ridiculous.” She quickly grabbed her phone, pretending to text Kate Martin, but her thoughts were elsewhere.

Jake Callaway’s daughter, huh? Caitlin thought, a small smile tugging at her lips. Well, Sienna Callaway, I guess there’s more to you than I realized.
