Chapter 7
The door opened, and this time, 27 didn’t move. Not immediately.
Her body reacted, of course. The shift in air, the sound of the lock, something in her chest tightened, breath catching before she could fully control it.
But she held still. Forced it down. Control.
Viv stepped in first.
Elara followed.
Together again.
27 felt it immediately, the difference in the room. Elara’s presence didn’t soften anything this time. If anything, It made it sharper.
Viv closed the door behind them with a quiet click. Her gaze found 27 instantly, and stayed there.
Too still.
Too focused.
27 held it.
Didn’t look away.
Didn’t move.
“Stand,” Viv said. 27 obeyed.
Faster than before.
Cleaner
The chain dragged softly against the floor as she rose, posture straight, shoulders pulled back with more intention than she felt. Viv watched every second. “Good Pet,” she said.
Elara shifted slightly behind her, arms loosely crossed, her attention already fixed on 27 but quieter than usual.
Watching
Viv stepped forward slowly. Stopping at the exact same distance as always.
Precise.
Measured.
“You’ve improved,” she said. The words should have felt like approval. They didn’t.
27 said nothing.
Viv’s gaze flicked briefly, almost imperceptibly, toward Elara, Then back. “You respond faster,” Viv continued.
A pause.
“But not consistently.”
27’s fingers twitched slightly at her side. Viv noticed. “Repeat the rules.”
27 didn’t hesitate. “You speak when spoken to. Don’t challenge you. Don’t forget my position. Don’t hesitate.” Her voice was steady. Too steady.
Viv tilted her head slightly. “Again.” 27 repeated them, slower this time.
Viv stepped closer. “You’re adapting,” she said.
A pause.
“Selective adaptation.” The words landed heavier.
27’s jaw tightened. Elara shifted slightly behind Viv.
Subtle, but there. Viv didn’t turn. Didn’t acknowledge it, but her voice changed just slightly.
“You respond differently depending on who’s speaking.” Silence dropped into the room.
Thick.
Immediate
27’s chest tightened. She didn’t look at Elara. Didn’t move, but the moment existed anyway.
Viv stepped closer.
“You look at her,” she said.
Not loud.
Not sharp
Certain.
Elara let out a quiet breath behind her.
Almost a laugh.
Almost not.
27 stayed still. Viv’s gaze sharpened. “More than you should.”
A pause.
“And faster than you do me.” The truth of it settled in the air. Unavoidable. 27’s fingers curled slightly.
Viv took one more step forward. Now close enough that the space between them felt intentional. “Why?” Viv asked.
The question wasn’t curious. It was a test. 27’s throat tightened. She didn’t answer. Viv watched her for a moment longer.
Then, she stepped back. “You won’t answer that,” she said. “Not yet.”
Elara shifted again, pushing lightly off the wall.
“This feels a little dramatic,” she said casually. “She’s just—”
“Quiet.” Viv cut her off.
Not harsh.
But final.
Elara went still.
The room shifted again. Viv turned slightly this time. Not fully. Just enough. “You went to her alone.” The words were calm, but they hit like something sharp.
Silence.
Elara didn’t respond immediately. Then, a small smile. “And?” she said lightly. Viv looked at her fully now.
And that—
That was different.
27 watched carefully. Because this wasn’t about her anymore. Not completely.
“You broke structure,” Viv said. Elara shrugged slightly. “I was bored. You were at work. I needed some stimulation.”
A beat.
“And she’s interesting.”
Viv held her gaze. Longer than necessary. “Later,” Viv said.
Just one word, but it carried weight.
Promise.
Consequence.
Elara’s smile didn’t fade. “If you say so,” she murmured.
Viv turned back to 27. Like nothing had shifted. Like everything was still under control. “You’re confusing access with control,” she said.
27’s breath hitched slightly. Viv stepped closer again. “You don’t choose when things are given to you.”
A pause.
“You respond.” The words felt heavier now. More targeted. “Stand still,” Viv said. 27 froze.
“Don’t move.” The command settled into her body immediately. “Don’t speak.”
Silence.
Viv stepped back.
Watching.
Waiting.
Time stretched.
27’s muscles tightened slowly. The strain building inch by inch. Her instinct flickered, Just for a second, toward Elara.
Viv saw it.
Of course she did. “Eyes forward,” Viv said.
27 snapped her focus back instantly. Her breathing uneven now. Elara watched from the side. Quieter. More focused than before.
Something in her expression had shifted.
Less amusement.
More interest.
Viv let the silence stretch longer.
Long enough to hurt. “Good Pet,” she said.
The words broke the tension slightly, But not enough.
Viv stepped closer one last time.
“You’ll unlearn that,” she said quietly.
A pause.
“The habit.” Her gaze flicked briefly toward Elara again.
“Or I’ll remove it.”
Silence.
27 held still.
Didn’t react.
Didn’t move.
But inside something shifted.
Because now, this wasn’t just about surviving them.
It was about navigating them.
Both of them.
And they were no longer aligned.
Viv turned toward the door. Elara pushed off the wall, following but not before glancing back at 27 one last time. Their eyes met. Brief, but charged.
Then she was gone.
The door shut.
The lock clicked.
Silence returned.
Darkness returned.
