Chapter 27

The cobblestone streets of the capital felt suffocating after two weeks on the open road.

Maya and Myne returned to the "Dragon’s Rest" inn as conquering heroes, or at least, that was the narrative Myne had spun for the royal guards at the city gates. The luggage was unpacked, and the dust of the road was scrubbed away in the hot springs.

But behind the locked door of their lavish suite, the atmosphere was uniquely tense.

Maya sat near the window, polishing the silver plating of her default Gauntlet. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Myne. The red-haired princess was humming a light, airy tune as she arranged a silver tea set on the small oak table.

Myne’s vanity was still thoroughly stroked from the trip, but a seed of deep, toxic paranoia had taken root in her mind. Maya had slipped away multiple times during the journey—to "scout," to "gather herbs," to "secure the perimeter." When they had heard the news of Viscount Bernad's sudden, violent downfall at the hands of the Bow Hero, Maya had seemed completely unfazed.

Myne didn't like unknown variables. She liked complete, unquestioning control.

"Maya-sama," Myne called out softly, her voice dripping with sweet affection. "Come, sit. I had the innkeeper brew a very special blend for us. A delicate chamomile from the royal reserves. It will soothe your exhausted muscles."

Maya smiled, standing up and walking over to the table. "You always take such good care of me, Myne."

As Maya reached for the delicate porcelain teacup, the sapphire embedded in her Gauntlet suddenly pulsed with a sharp, stinging heat.

PING.

A blaring, bright red warning screen flashed across Maya's vision, completely invisible to Myne.

[WARNING: Foreign Magical Compound Detected.]

[Substance: 'Siren's Whisper' (High-Grade Church Alchemy)]

[Effect: Suppresses the target's willpower. Induces extreme suggestibility, temporary memory malleability, and absolute truth-compulsion. Highly illegal.]

Maya’s breath caught in her throat for a fraction of a second. A truth serum, she realized, her blood running ice-cold. Combined with mind-control. She isn't just suspicious; she's trying to brainwash me.

Myne sat across the table, holding her own, untainted cup of tea. She smiled over the rim, her emerald eyes sharp and calculating. "Drink up, Maya-sama. While it's hot."

Maya looked down at the pale yellow liquid. If she refused it, Myne would know she was caught. The fragile alliance would shatter, and Maya would suddenly find herself fighting the entire kingdom's spy network before the Wave even hit.

But Maya remembered her stats. Over the last two weeks, she had leveled up consistently. She had fed her weapon poisonous herbs, venom sacs, and Chimera acid.

Maya brought the cup to her lips, keeping her eyes locked on Myne. She tilted her head back and drank the entire cup in three long swallows.

Maya set the teacup down with a soft clink.

She didn't miss a beat. Letting her eyes suddenly unfocus, she allowed her shoulders to slump forward. The vibrant, calculating energy drained from her posture, replaced by a slack, completely vacant expression. She stared blankly at the wall behind Myne.

Myne’s sweet smile instantly vanished. She set her cup down, leaning forward across the table, her eyes gleaming with absolute, predatory triumph.

"Maya-sama?" Myne whispered, waving a hand in front of Maya's glazed eyes. Maya didn't blink.

"Perfect," Myne hissed, her true, cruel personality bleeding through her voice. "Those Church priests charge an exorbitant amount for this potion, but it was worth every silver coin. Now… let us see what secrets the Fifth Hero is hiding."

Myne stood up, walking around the table to stand directly beside Maya. She placed a hand firmly on Maya's iron-clad shoulder.

"Hear my voice and speak only the absolute truth," Myne commanded. "Where did you go the night Viscount Bernad's manor was attacked in Riyute?"

Maya kept her breathing steady, her mind racing at a million miles an hour. She had to give Myne answers that completely disarmed her paranoia while feeding her massive ego.

"I was… walking the perimeter of the town," Maya answered, her voice deliberately flat and monotone, devoid of any emotion.

Myne frowned. "Why?"

"To ensure… no monsters or fleeing thugs… threatened the inn," Maya lied flawlessly, leaning into the brainwashed persona. "I could not allow… anyone to disturb your peaceful sleep, Princess."

Myne’s frown softened. A flicker of genuine surprise crossed her face, quickly replaced by smug satisfaction. The "mysterious disappearances" weren't secret missions at all. The Gauntlet was just acting as a devoted guard dog.

"Interesting," Myne purred, trailing a finger down Maya's arm. "And what of the Shield Demon? Naofumi Iwatani. Do you harbor any secret loyalty to him? Did you help him at Lute Village?"

"No," Maya answered flatly. "He is weak. He is an outcast. He… insulted you on the first day. I only fought near him… because the monsters were thickest there. I do not care if he lives or dies."

Myne let out a soft, wicked laugh. It was a terrifying, ugly sound. "Oh, the Church will be so pleased to hear that. You truly are a useful little weapon."

Myne leaned in close, her lips brushing against Maya's ear. This was the final test.

"Who do you truly serve, Maya Lin? The King? The Church? Yourself?"

Maya didn't hesitate. She delivered the absolute masterpiece of her performance.

"I serve… only the beautiful Princess Myne," Maya droned, her vacant eyes staring straight ahead. "She is… the true star of Melromarc. My power… exists only to make her a Queen. I will crush anyone… who stands in her way."

Myne gasped softly, her vanity completely, utterly overwhelmed. The immense power of the Gauntlet Hero, the tactical brilliance, the crushing physical strength—it was all hers. She had an invincible, unquestioning slave who worshipped the very ground she walked on.

Myne stepped back, her chest heaving slightly with sheer elation. She snapped her fingers directly in front of Maya's face.

The "spell" broke.

Maya violently blinked, shaking her head as if waking from a deep sleep. She let out a small groan, rubbing her temples. "Oh… my goodness. Myne? What happened? My head feels so heavy…"

Myne was already sitting back in her chair, the picture of sweet, innocent concern.

"Oh, Maya-sama, you gave me such a fright!" Myne cooed, reaching out to gently stroke Maya's hand. "You fell asleep sitting right up! The tea must have worked a little too well. You truly exhausted yourself protecting me on our journey."

"I… I suppose I did," Maya murmured, offering a weak, grateful smile. "Thank you for the tea, Myne. I feel much better now."

"Of course, Maya-sama," Myne smiled, a look of absolute, unshakable confidence in her emerald eyes. "We are partners, after all. Forever."

Myne gracefully excused herself to her own room to change, completely satisfied that she held all the cards in the kingdom.

The moment the door clicked shut, the weak, confused smile vanished from Maya's face. She stared at the empty porcelain teacup.

Her hands weren't trembling from the potion. They were trembling with rage.

She actually did it, Maya thought, her jaw clenching so hard her teeth ached. She tried to overwrite my mind just to satisfy her paranoia. The King might be a prejudiced fool, but his daughter is a monster.

Maya looked down at the shadow stretching beneath her chair. Onyx popped his head out, letting out a low, menacing growl that resonated with Maya's own anger. The wolf had sensed the hostility in the room and had been inches away from ripping Myne's throat out.

"Not yet, Onyx," Maya whispered, gently petting the wolf's head to calm him. "If we kill her now, we bring the whole kingdom down on our heads before the Wave. Let her think she holds the leash."

Maya stood up, her dark eyes entirely cold. The game had fundamentally changed. It wasn't just about surviving the Waves anymore. It was about dismantling the corrupt system that tried to poison her.
