Chapter 15

The lead "thug"—a seasoned Shadow operative named Kael—lunged forward with a feint, intending to test the Hero's reaction time.

Maya didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She moved with the terrifying, economic precision of a seasoned cage fighter.

She slipped the feint, stepping deep inside Kael’s guard. Before he could bring his short sword around, Maya drove her heavy, iron-clad fist in a tight, brutal uppercut into his solar plexus. The air exploded from his lungs in a choked gasp, and he crumpled to his knees.

Maya didn't stop. As the second attacker swung wide, she ducked under the blade, pivoting on her heel. She unleashed a devastating, Muay Thai-style low roundhouse kick. Her shin, armored by the iron greave of her set, connected with the side of the attacker's knee with a sickening CRACK.

He went down screaming, clutching a leg that was now bent at an unnatural angle.

Two down in three seconds.

The remaining two Shadows hesitated, their professional veneer cracking. They had been ordered to test her, not get dismantled. They exchanged a glance and prepared to rush her together.

Maya’s eyes narrowed. They're disciplined. Too disciplined for street trash. She needed to end this, but she couldn't leave them mobile enough to follow her.

She charged the third man. He thrust his sword, but Maya caught the flat of the blade with her iron palm, shoving it aside. In the same motion, she drove a piston-like straight right into his shoulder joint, dislocating it with a wet pop. He dropped his weapon, staggering back.

The fourth operative froze as Maya turned her cold, dead gaze upon him. Three of his elite squad were on the ground—one winded, one crippled, one disarmed—in less than ten seconds of combat. The Gauntlet Hero hadn't even broken a sweat.

Maya held her fighting stance for a heartbeat longer, ensuring they weren't getting back up immediately. Then, her focus snapped back to Myne. The sleep smoke was dissipating, but the princess was still out cold.

Priority: Extraction, Maya thought. I can't let Myne wake up here and see what I did.

She dropped her guard, the iron plates of her gauntlet shifting and retracting.

[Equipping: Spider-Silk Gauntlet]

The heavy metal was replaced by a sleek, white, fibrous material woven around her forearm and hand. Maya scooped up the unconscious Myne in a smooth motion, settling her into the now-familiar bridal carry.

The fourth Shadow took a tentative step forward.

Maya raised her silk-clad wrist, aiming directly at his face. With a sharp flick of her wrist, a dense, sticky glob of webbing shot out with a THWIP sound. It splattered directly across the operative's eyes and nose, blinding him instantly. He clawed uselessly at the gooey mess.

"Stay down," Maya growled.

She turned to the alley wall. It was twelve feet high—too high to jump with a passenger.

[Equipping: Orange Balloon Gauntlet]

The white silk morphed instantly into the bright orange, rubbery texture of the balloon monsters. Maya took three quick steps and threw her shoulder into the brick wall.

BOING.

The kinetic absorption property of the balloon gauntlet flared. Maya rebounded off the wall with incredible force, launching herself upward. She cleared the lip of the roof, landing softly with Myne still safely cradled in her arms.

Without looking back at the carnage in the alley below, Maya took off across the rooftops, heading back toward the inn before Myne could wake up from her magically induced nap.

An Hour Later, Far Away…

Shadow Kael knelt before the magical projection of Queen Mirellia, wincing as a medic set his dislocated shoulder. The other members of his squad were being tended to in the background.

"Report," the Queen demanded, her voice tinny through the communication crystal.

"The target… is exceedingly dangerous, Your Majesty," Kael gasped, gritting his teeth against the pain. "Her combat style is unlike anything in Melromarc. It’s brutal, efficient, and designed to cripple. She shattered Ren’s knee and dislocated my shoulder in seconds. She held nothing back."

Mirellia’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Did she enjoy it? Did she seem bloodthirsty?"

"No, Majesty. It was… surgical. Cold professionalism. Like she was swatting flies." Kael paused. "However, once we were neutralized, she did not finish us off. She immediately prioritized securing Princess Malty. She used the weapon's form-change abilities to escape with the Princess rather than continuing the fight."

A slow smile spread across Queen Mirellia’s face.

"Excellent," the Queen whispered. "She has the capacity for extreme violence, but she is not ruled by it. And she protected her charge, even when that charge is a viper like Malty. The Gauntlet Hero passes the test."

Mirellia leaned closer to the crystal. "Now, it is time to open a dialogue. But we must be careful. If she realizes I sent the attackers, she will never trust me."

That Evening, The Dragon's Rest Inn…

Myne groaned, fluttering her eyes open. She was tucked into her own bed at the inn. Maya was sitting quietly in a chair next to the bed, reading a book about basic elemental magic.

"Maya-sama?" Myne mumbled, rubbing her head. "What happened? I feel… foggy."

Maya looked up, offering a gentle, relieved smile. "Oh, thank goodness you're awake! We were walking back from the shops, and you suddenly fainted. Just collapsed right in the street!"

"I… I did?" Myne frowned, trying to piece her memory together. The last thing she remembered was a strange purple smoke.

"Yes," Maya nodded, her eyes wide with concern. "I was so worried! I carried you straight back here. You've been sleeping for hours. You really must stop pushing yourself so hard with your magic, Myne. You're working yourself to the bone for me."

Myne’s suspicion melted away instantly, replaced by the warm glow of vanity. Of course, she thought. I overworked myself being a brilliant mage, and this devoted puppy carried me home again.

"You are too kind to me, Maya-sama," Myne smiled weakly.

"Rest now, Myne. I'll go get us some dinner brought up," Maya said, standing up and heading for the door.

As Maya stepped out into the hallway and closed the door behind her, her smile vanished. She leaned against the wall, exhaling slowly. That had been too close.

She looked down at her gauntlet, now back to its default silver form.

Suddenly, she noticed something tucked under the strap of her gauntlet. It was a small, tightly rolled piece of parchment, sealed with purple wax and an unfamiliar crest—not the King's, and not the Church's.

Maya frowned. Someone must have slipped it onto her person during the fight in the alley, or perhaps during her run across the rooftops.

She cracked the seal and unrolled the tiny scroll. It contained a single sentence, written in elegant script:

“The Iron Fist is formidable, but the Waves require more than brute force. If you wish to know the truth about the summoning and save this world, seek the shadow beneath the lilac moon. – Q.”
