Chapter 31
It was already 7:00 PM, and Sienna was just finishing getting ready for her date with Caitlin. Her bedroom was bathed in the warm amber glow of the bedside lamp, the hum of soft jazz music playing from her speaker creating a mellow ambiance that matched her fluttering mood. She stood in front of her mirror, her fingers delicately applying the final swipe of her favorite strawberry lip gloss. The subtle shine on her lips added the perfect touch to her otherwise simple outfit-a cream-colored sweater that hugged her upper body just right, and a pair of high-waisted mom jeans that cinched at her waist. Her blonde hair was softly curled at the ends, a style that made her feel both comfortable and pretty.
Just as she clicked the lip gloss shut, there was a familiar knock on the door. Her heart did a happy little jump in her chest. A wide smile stretched across her face as she turned, placing the gloss gently on her dresser. She walked toward the door, the sound of her sock-covered feet soft against the floor.
Opening the door, her breath hitched a little.
There stood Caitlin.
A nervous-looking Caitlin, to be exact -tall, striking, a bundle of nerves hiding behind a sheepish expression.
But what made Sienna’s smile turn from wide to soft was the sight of Caitlin holding out a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers.
Sunflowers.
Her favorite.
Caitlin cleared her throat, eyes flickering down to the flowers before flicking back up to meet Sienna’s. Her cheeks turned a brilliant shade of red as she whispered shyly, “I didn’t know what flowers to get you, Sunshine, so I bought you sunflowers. They reminded me of you… so I got them.”
Sienna’s heart flipped.
Actually flipped.
Something about the way Caitlin said it-so earnest, so unsure, like she was offering more than just flowers-made Sienna’s breath catch. She stepped forward, her eyes glimmering, and took the sunflowers gently from Caitlin’s hands. Then, with no hesitation at all, she leaned in and kissed Caitlin softly, sweetly, lips barely grazing in a tender promise.
Caitlin kissed her back, arms slipping around Sienna’s waist, pulling her close without crushing the bouquet between them. Her touch was careful but grounding, and when their lips parted, Sienna’s breath was warm against Caitlin’s mouth.
“Thank you for the flowers, Clark,” Sienna murmured, her smile so full of emotion it made Caitlin’s heart ache in the best way. “I love them. They’re my favorite flowers. And… it’s cute that they reminded you of me.”
Caitlin grinned, a bashful sort of smile, eyes flickering to the ground for a second before glancing back up through her lashes. “So does this mean I got the right flowers, then?”
Sienna hummed, leaning up to kiss Caitlin’s cheek, her lip gloss leaving a soft sheen behind. “Mhm. Let me just put them in water and grab my purse, then we can go, baby.”
“Mhm,” Caitlin echoed , letting Sienna go reluctantly.
As soon as Sienna disappeared inside, Caitlin let out a breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding. Her palms were sweaty. Her heart was still racing. She quickly ran her fingers through her hair, then smoothed down her blouse and adjusted her jacket. She couldn’t stop smiling.
A few minutes later, Sienna emerged again, holding her purse. Caitlin’s eyes immediately dropped to her lips. There was a fresh, glossy sheen on them again and couldn’t help the way her eyes traced the bow of Sienna’s mouth, hungry in a way that was so subtle and yet so palpable, and Caitlin had to fight the urge to kiss her all over again.
Sienna, catching Caitlin’s gaze, let her eyes drift down over Caitlin’s form. And oh, she looked-damn-good. The white blouse, the jacket, the pants. The way her hair fell loose around her shoulders. She was a walking heartthrob, and Sienna couldn’t stop the heat blooming low in her belly.
Caitlin’s voice broke through her ogling, teasing and rich with smugness. “You like what you see, baby? Take a picture-it’ll last longer.”
Sienna’s eyes snapped up, face flushed, but she only rolled her eyes to hide her embarrassment. “Whatever, Clark. Let’s go,” she mumbled, turning around to lock the door. She hoped Caitlin didn’t notice the way her fingers trembled just slightly from the tension thrumming under her skin.
But Caitlin did notice-and she smirked.
Once the door was locked, Caitlin offered her hand, her voice gentle and filled with quiet admiration. “You look beautiful, Sunshine.”
Sienna took her hand, her cheeks still slightly warm, and smiled. “Thank you.”
They walked hand in hand to the parking lot, fingers interlaced comfortably. When they reached Caitlin’s car, Caitlin opened the passenger door like a true gentleman. Sienna slid in, whispering a soft, “Thank you,” her voice a little breathy from the butterflies that refused to settle.
Caitlin leaned in and pressed a kiss to Sienna’s forehead before walking around to the driver’s side and getting in. Before she turned the key, she pulled out something from her jacket pocket-a black silk blindfold.
“Sunshine, before I drive us to where we’re having our date, I need you to put this on,” Caitlin said gently. “I don’t wanna ruin the surprise.”
Sienna arched an amused brow but tilted her head, turning around so Caitlin could tie the blindfold. “Fine. But this better not be a murder scene, Clark.”
Chuckling, Caitlin gently tied it around her eyes. “Trust me. It’s not that kind of date.”
With Sienna blindfolded and trusting, Caitlin started the car and backed out of the parking garage. As she drove, she reached out and laced her fingers with Sienna’s again-because she knew Sienna liked holding hands while driving. And maybe Caitlin liked it too. Maybe more than she’d admit.
The car ride was quiet, but not uncomfortably so.
Sienna didn’t ask questions. She just squeezed Caitlin’s hand every now and then, smiling softly as the car rolled gently through the road. Caitlin occasionally glanced at her, in awe of how much trust Sienna placed in her.
Soon, Caitlin parked the car at the forest clearing-the very place where they’d had their first picnic. The moonlight filtered through the trees, and stars peeked through the dusky blue sky.
Caitlin turned to Sienna. “Wait here,” she said, kissing her hand before getting out.
She walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and whispered, “Give me your hand, baby.”
Sienna hesitated for only a second before placing her hand in Caitlin’s, her trust unwavering.
“Watch your step,” Caitlin murmured as she helped her out gently, careful of her footing. She then reached into the back seat, grabbing the picnic basket and a flashlight.
Still holding Sienna’s hand, she led her deeper into the woods. The path was familiar but enchanting under the twilight. The flashlight illuminated soft patches of grass and smooth rocks.
Sienna couldn’t help but speak, her voice a soft murmur. “Cait, where are we going? This feels… dangerous.”
“Just trust me, Sunshine,” Caitlin whispered back, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.
Moments later, Caitlin stopped. She let go of Sienna’s hand but placed her palm gently on her shoulder, guiding her down onto a flat rock.
“I need you to sit here for a second,” Caitlin said softly. “Just a few more minutes. Everything will be worth it, I promise.”
Sienna sighed, still blindfolded. “This is really suspicious, Cait. You’re acting suspicious. Where are we?”
Caitlin just kissed her forehead and smiled, coaxing her to sit. “Don’t worry, it’s not anything bad.”
While Sienna sat, Caitlin got to work quickly. She spread out a soft plaid blanket on the grass, then lit a lantern and placed it in the middle. It gave off a warm, cozy glow. From the picnic basket, she took out a container of freshly cooked pasta and another filled with chocolate-covered strawberries. Finally, she pulled out the telescope she’d borrowed, placing it just beside the blanket.
Once everything was perfectly set up, Caitlin returned to Sienna, gently tugged her up from the rock, and whispered, “Okay, baby. I’m gonna take the blindfold off. I hope you love the setup.”
Sienna nodded, a smile already teasing her lips.
Caitlin untied the blindfold, slowly.
As Sienna blinked and her eyes adjusted to the warm light of the lantern, her mouth parted in surprise.
She gasped.
The soft glow of the lantern illuminated a blanket surrounded by food, a telescope, and the stunning, glimmering lake behind it all. The same lake they had their first picnic near. The water sparkled in the night, and the sky above was glittering with stars.
Her eyes welled.
She turned to Caitlin, her voice barely above a whisper. “You brought me to the spot we had our first picnic in… didn’t you?”
Caitlin blushed but nodded, her arms sliding around Sienna’s waist. “Yeah, I did. I thought… having our first date here would be nice. Plus, it’s beautiful at night. I remembered you telling me here that your dream date was a stargazing picnic. So… I wanted to make it come true.”
Sienna threw her arms around Caitlin’s neck, kissing her again-longer this time, slower.
“I see you even brought a telescope, Trying to impress me with astronomy?” she teased.
“Well,” Caitlin smirked, “I heard a telescope is reliable for stargazing. Makes you feel closer to the stars.”
They sat down on the blanket together, and Caitlin opened the pasta.
“You brought pasta,” Sienna smiled, eyes lighting up.
“Your favorite,” Caitlin said proudly. “And dessert.”
She revealed the chocolate-covered strawberries, and Sienna actually squealed a little, leaning over to kiss the corner of Caitlin’s mouth, her voice soft. “This is the best date ever. No restaurant could ever beat this.”
Caitlin smiled. “I’m glad you like it, baby. I promise there’ll be more dates like this. You’re the one for me, Sienna Callaway.”
“You’re such a romantic, Cait.”
Caitlin shrugged, lips twitching. “Only for you, baby. Only for you.”
The rest of the night unfolded like a dream.
They ate, fed each other bites, kissed in between sips of wine and giggles. The stars glimmered above them, casting silver glows across their faces. They laid back on the blanket, Sienna nestled into Caitlin’s side as Caitlin tried-badly-to figure out how to use the telescope.
Sienna teased her endlessly. Caitlin blamed it on the user manual being confusing.
And when Caitlin finally got it right, she held Sienna close and whispered, “You’re more beautiful than every star in this sky.”
Sienna blushed as they held hands and layed back staring at constellations.
Sienna snuggled into Caitlin’s side, head on her shoulder, her hand resting over Caitlin’s heart. They didn’t say much after a while. They didn’t need to.
It was all there-in the stars above them, in the silence, in every soft breath shared between kisses.
A night that felt like falling in love, quiet and certain under the stars.
