Chapter 48

The moving truck rattled down the quiet street, dust kicking up in lazy spirals around the tires. Lisa pressed her palm against the glass of the window, watching the sun glint off their new house. Her heart was racing, a cocktail of excitement, disbelief, and a little exhaustion from the past few months of moving preparation.

Jennie reached over and squeezed her hand, her usual playful smirk tugging at her lips. “Can you believe it, Lisa? Our very own place. All the overtime, all those late nights… all worth it.”

Lisa leaned into her, letting her forehead rest lightly against Jennie’s shoulder. “I still can’t. I mean… look at it! It’s ours.”

Jennie nodded, her eyes scanning the small but charming house. White shutters, a neatly trimmed garden, a tiny porch that was perfect for Kuma’s morning sunbathing sessions. “I keep expecting someone to wake me up and tell me it’s all a dream,” she admitted.

Kuma, ever excited about new environments, wriggled in his carrier, whining softly as if urging them to hurry. Lisa laughed, unbuckling him. “Go on, boy. Explore!” Kuma bolted forward, sniffing every corner of the front porch before barreling down the small path to the backyard.

The moving team had already started unloading boxes, the sound of plastic and cardboard filling the air. Jennie and Lisa stepped inside, their hands intertwined, and paused to take in the rooms. The living room smelled faintly of fresh paint, and the sunlight streaming through the windows made everything glow.

“I can see it already,” Lisa said softly, gesturing to the empty space. “Our couch over here, a rug there… Kuma’s little bed in the corner. Oh! And a shelf for all your ridiculously expensive vinyl records.”

Jennie laughed, her cheeks flushing a little. “Ridiculously expensive, yes. But perfect for our home. And you… you’ve already planned it all out, haven’t you?”

Lisa grinned. “I may have made a few sketches.” She pulled out a small notebook from her bag, flipping it open to reveal detailed room layouts, furniture placements, and even little notes about plant placement and lighting. Jennie peeked over her shoulder, trying not to be impressed—but she clearly was.

Hours passed in a whirl of boxes, tape, and laughter. Jennie carried heavy kitchen appliances while Lisa chased after Kuma, who had discovered a particularly interesting scent near the hallway. “Lisa! He’s trying to climb the stairs!” Jennie shouted, laughing despite the strain in her arms.

“I got him! I got him!” Lisa responded, diving forward to scoop the little dog up just before he made a leap. Jennie rolled her eyes fondly. “We’re going to destroy the floorboards before we even move in properly.”

Lisa smirked. “Don’t act like you didn’t do the same thing last time with the couch.”

By mid-afternoon, sweat was dripping from their foreheads, their hair sticking in funny places, but their spirits remained unbroken. Jennie plopped down onto the living room floor with a sigh, rubbing her back. “Okay, serious question—why does moving always feel like a full-body workout combined with a marathon?”

Lisa joined her, sitting cross-legged and pulling Kuma onto her lap. “Because it is. And we’re adults, Jennie. We paid for this with actual blood, sweat, and tears.”

Jennie leaned back, letting herself rest against the wall. “Yeah… but seeing it here, looking like ours, makes it all worth it.” She glanced around the sunlit room, eyes softening. “Even if we argue over towel colors and light fixtures for the next year, it’s ours.”

They spent the evening unpacking small items, carefully placing dishes in the cabinets, arranging books on shelves, and hanging pictures. Jennie held up a photo of the two of them from their first trip together, grinning as she tried to find the perfect spot for it. “Do you think this goes better on the mantle… or the hallway?”

Lisa tilted her head, squinting at the photo. “Mantle. Definitely. It deserves prime real estate.” She leaned forward to kiss Jennie lightly on the cheek, brushing a smudge of paint off her shoulder. “We’ve come a long way, huh?”

Jennie’s eyes glistened as she nodded. “We really have. And… I love that every single thing here has our story. Every late night, every stressful day at work—it’s all in this house.”

By nightfall, the chaos of moving settled into a warm, contented fatigue. Boxes were stacked neatly against walls, the furniture arranged just so, and Kuma, exhausted from his own exploring, curled up in a sunny patch near the window. Lisa and Jennie flopped onto the couch, their hands tangled together, the silence between them comfortable.

Lisa rested her head on Jennie’s shoulder. “Coffee tomorrow morning?” she asked softly, already imagining their first lazy Saturday.

Jennie nodded, brushing her hair back and letting herself relax. “And pancakes. And maybe some chaos with Kuma. And maybe a bubble bath because… wow, we need it.”

They laughed, leaning into each other, sharing warmth and quiet happiness. The house was more than walls and windows—it was a sanctuary. A place that held the story of their love, their hard work, and every little triumph that had led them here.

Finally, Lisa whispered, her voice soft but filled with certainty, “I love you, Nini. And I love this… us… here.”

Jennie kissed the top of her head, her own voice gentle. “I love you too, Lisa. More than anything. And this house? It’s perfect, because it has you in it.”

Kuma barked, as if on cue, sending both women into laughter. They chased him across the living room, giggling like kids, and finally collapsed together on the couch, their bodies tangled, hearts full, and the golden glow of sunset streaming through the windows.

It wasn’t just a house. It was their home. Their accomplishment. Their dream. And after all the blood, sweat, and tears that had brought them here, it was more perfect than they had ever imagined.
