Chapter 66

Even when their strategies clashed, Makizal and Williams shared one unspoken certainty:
if Marz was gone and Emilio was still breathing, then Romaric had to disappear.

Makizal, already far from the smoldering hotel suite, knew Romaric had fled. He had not wasted time deploying tracking teams or surveillance. A man who runs with revenge in his heart always circles back. Romaric would return on his own, searching for an opening, and that opening would come through someone close to Williams.

What Makizal did not know was that Romaric had already made desperate moves that involved Miss Kai, Adeline, and the unsuspecting Yada.

The time for games had ended. If the rules could no longer guarantee victory, then Makizal would rewrite them. He planned to do exactly that the moment his feet touched the city’s soil again.

A phone call interrupted his thoughts. He dismissed it instantly. It was the city police requesting information about Williams so they could take her statement. He let it ring until it went silent.

Across the city, Kannika’s breathing had stabilized. She remained unconscious, but the doctor assured Yada that she would open her eyes by morning. Before leaving the clinic, Yada made sure Pako was settled in and ready to take her place. They took turns now, one watching Kannika and the other resting, both waiting for the moment her eyes would flutter open again.

Yada needed to breathe. She needed clarity. And she needed to speak to her brother.

Rouffie had taken refuge at the family home. She found him pacing by the window, tense and pretending not to be.

“Listen, I want to talk to you,” she said quietly.

“You should have come yesterday,” he replied without looking at her. “You stood me up.”

“That is actually what I want to talk about.”

He sighed and finally turned toward her. “Alright. I am listening.”

Yada took a steady breath. “I want to suggest something to Kannika. I want to ask for her hand in marriage.”

Rouffie’s head snapped up. His eyes widened. “Wait. Were you two together? And is she awake?”

“No, she has not woken up yet, but she might wake up tomorrow.”

“And the wedding? Are you two in a relationship?” he demanded with confusion rising in his voice.

“No, it is to help her,” Yada explained.

“What?”

“Kannika wants to get her adoptive sister back. If we get married, I can give her the stability needed for a custody arrangement.”

“Stop that right now.” Rouffie exploded, fury twisting his expression. “Who told you about her situation and her sister?”

“That is not what matters.”

Their argument had already drawn the attention of their father, who stood silently on the landing, listening.

“You are out of your mind, Yada. You always think you have everything under control.” Rouffie pointed at her harshly.

“Oh, please. Says the one who has spent his entire life relying on everyone else to clean up after him?” Yada snapped.

“What?”

“When was the last time you had anything under control?” she challenged him. “Dad is risking his career to clear you with Internal Affairs. And who will help Kannika?”

“She never asked for your help,” he shouted. “You are forcing yourself into something that has nothing to do with you.”

“You should not have interfered with that operation either,” she countered. “Why did you do it?”

“Because it is my job. It has nothing to do with you.”

“And what I am doing is my job too.”

“Your job is marriage?”

“No, but…”

Their father finally stepped forward. “What is happening here?”

Rouffie did not hesitate to expose her. “Yada wants to marry the agent who was with me at the clinic.”

“What?” their father exclaimed, stunned.

Yada turned sharply toward her brother. Her hurt was immediate and deep.
“It was not your place to tell him,”She whispered. “The agent you are talking about is the woman who saved your life. You are unbelievable.”

Rouffie froze, the weight of her words sinking in.

But Yada did not wait for him to respond.
She walked past both of them and left the house without looking back, even when they called her name.

“Yada!” her father shouted.
She did not stop.

By the time she reached her apartment, her chest felt painfully tight.

Was she truly insane?
Was she truly crazy to consider marrying the woman who had saved her brother’s life, who was also the friend of her missing client, all because it might be the only way to help Kannika reclaim the sister she had fought for her entire life?

Yada pressed her palms against her eyes and trembled.

The situation was dire, and the news was not encouraging.
If Kannika woke up, Yada would tell her everything. Every secret she had kept, every fear she carried, and every desperate plan she was willing to attempt.

And she would propose.

Whatever Kannika’s reaction.

It was the only risk left that was worth taking.
