Chapter 22
Kaitlyn’s POV
“All I’m asking for is the location of the murder weapon, is that so hard to answer?” He yells in my face, but all I can think of is the fact that my best friend is lying there lifeless.
When I didn’t reply, he put a gun to my head, thinking it was a threat. But there was nothing more I would want than to die in this moment with Scarlett.
“Couldn’t even save her, how useless.” The guy says before shooting me in the head.
I woke up, breathing heavily. I sat up in bed and put my head in my hands. It didn’t go like that, he didn’t shoot me or say those words. Though I wish he did. I groan out loud, hating that I’m having these types of dreams again. I haven’t had these dreams in a long time.
I throw the covers off me immediately, walking towards the bathroom. I wash my face and freshen up before going downstairs to grab something to eat. As I go down the stairs, I’m met with Mia about to go inside the elevator. Yes, this house has an elevator as well. This girl is filthy rich, I’m convinced everything she owns has an elevator.
“Where are you going?” I lean on the railing and she stops in her tracks. “I’m leaving, gonna run some errands.” She turns to meet my gaze.
“Can I come?” She looks taken aback by my words, of course she is. She’s probably on her way to kill someone right now.
Mia was at a loss for words, I know for a fact she wants to say no, which she probably- “Sure, why not?” I can name a hundred reasons why not, but I chose not to. I head back upstairs to change into something more presentable, though my options are limited. Mia gave me some of her clothes to borrow and they’re either too formal or too casual.
I choose to go with a pair of jeans and a white button up shirt. It doesn’t look too formal since it’s worn with jeans, but it doesn’t look casual either. I head downstairs and Mia is nowhere to be found. Of course she left me.
I was about to go back upstairs until I heard a sudden blare of a car horn. I go out the front door and I see Mia in the driver’s seat with her window down and an impatient look on her face. I quickly made my way to the passenger side before getting in and shutting the door behind me.
Mia started driving us to wherever she was planning on going. I decided to stay, which may be a crazy idea, but last night I got her to open up. She told me she’s killed so many people that she got used to the sound of a gunshot, she even apologized for being selfish. If I get her to open up even more to me, and tell me more about her crimes and her plans, I can use it to my advantage.
I had a moment of weakness, but I believe I can do this. Someone still needs to pay for her crimes, and who else to blame but Mia herself? Besides, she swore it won’t happen again. As long as I hear no gunshots, I’ll be fine. I need to do my job, I need to do this.
“So, where to?” I ask playfully. “Hospital.” Wait, what? Oh god, don’t tell me she’s gonna bring me to therapy or something. I know I’m fucked up right now, but I have a job to do.
“I injured my hands, I’ll just have them checked real quick.” She opens and closes her fist on the steering wheel. She must’ve injured them further that night when she came back for me. Until now, I still don’t understand why she came back for me.
The drive to the hospital is quiet, I don’t bother initiating any conversation and neither does she. Surprisingly, she upheld her promise and hasn’t brought up what I told her about. But it’s too early to tell, it’s barely been 24 hours after all.
Once we arrive, we make our way to the elevator and Mia presses the button to the floor we’re going to. The elevator doors open up and Mia leads the way. It was a secluded part of the hospital, not many patients in sight. It mostly consisted of doctor’s offices, some had patients in them for consultation, but nothing that appeared too serious.
Mia opens the door and heads inside, I follow shortly after her. I close the door behind us and turn to look around the room. It was filled with awards on the shelf, a few picture frames. The pictures consisted of photos of whoever owned this office. A blonde woman who had a few streaks of brown hair, she had green eyes and soft features, yet she seemed awfully powerful.
A specific picture caught my attention. It was a picture of her and Mia, though they were way younger in the photo. They appeared to be teenagers and the photo was taken at a party. The blonde woman had a beer in her hand as she leaned on Mia who was smiling at the camera. She looked so different here, so full of life. You’d never expect this person to turn out the way she is today.
Before I could say anything about it, the door opens and in comes the woman I’ve seen in the photos. “Mia, I’m kinda busy right now, I-” She froze as she locked eyes with me. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you brought someone. Hi, Sloane Beaufort.” She extends a hand for me to shake and I gladly take it.
“Kaitlyn Prescott.” I said politely as I shook her hand. “Prescott?” Her expression shifts as if she recognized who I was. Did she know who I was?
“Isn’t she the cop you always mess with?” She gently took her hand out of my hold. She did know me, but for the wrong reasons. Is that how Mia described me with everyone she knew?
“I’m actually not a cop anymore, I lost my job.” I clarify in case she thinks I’m here to arrest someone. Well, technically yeah but it’s gonna take some time and evidence to do that.
An apologetic look takes over her features, “Oh, I am so sor-” Before she could finish, Mia cuts in. “Yes, yes, very sad. Listen, I need an x-ray.” Sloane gives her an annoyed glance before letting out a sigh. She makes her way to Mia before gently grabbing her hands and examining it.
“You seriously need to buy yourself boxing gloves, you can’t keep doing this to yourself.” Her words cause me to furrow my brows. Did Mia use that same sorry excuse she used last time? That she didn’t use gloves when beating up a punching bag? Or maybe it was true.
“That’s actually not why this happened, there were people involved this time.” Sloane gives her a concerned look, dropping Mia’s hands from her hold. “Who?”
Mia glances over to me before putting her attention back on Sloane. “Andrea set me up, she was working with Carter.” I’m sorry, what? Did I hear that right? Andrea Diaz set Mia up? The same Andrea I made out with? Oh god, she’s probably dead by now.
“I’m guessing she didn’t take the breakup well?” Sloane asks with a smirk. “No, she didn’t. But she was also desperate for money.” I had no idea Andrea was even capable of killing anyone, but setting someone like Mia up? That takes a lot of guts.
“Let’s get you that x-ray.” Sloane says as she gestures to Mia out of the room.
“Prescott, stay here. I mean it, please follow my orders this time.” Mia’s words cause Sloane to turn her attention to me. She did a double take as she looked at me from head to toe.
“Isn’t that Mia’s clothes?” Sloane asks and Mia grabs her arm as she tries to bring her out of the room with her but she isn’t budging. “Yeah, she’s been letting me borrow her clothes since I’ve been staying with her.” I offer her a smile.
“Really?” Sloane snaps her attention to Mia and gives her a knowing look. Mia drops her hold on her and pinches the bridge of her nose. “You know, fun fact about Mia, she hates sharing anything she owns. She’s very possessive of her belongings, it’s–” Mia visibly pulls her out of the room and shuts the door behind them, leaving me alone in Sloane’s office.
Sloane seemed nice, I can tell her and Mia are quite close. Close enough for Sloane to know Mia punches a punching bag without gloves. Close enough for Mia to tell her about the cop she always messes with. I wonder how long they’ve been friends for.
I stay in the room, deciding to follow Mia this time since it didn’t end well the last time. I stayed there for almost an hour, completely bored out of my mind. It got to a point where I grabbed one of Sloane’s medical books and started reading. All I got from reading that book is to stick to the career I have. Thank god I didn’t become a doctor, having to learn all this seemed like hell.
The door opens and Mia has an arm brace on her right hand for whatever injury she acquired. “Let’s go, Prescott.” I stood up from where I was seated and made my way to Mia. As I’m about to leave the room, Sloane stops me at the door frame.
“I am so sorry you lost your job, but you seem to be in great hands with Mia.” I hear Mia scoff on my right. I ignored her and replied to Sloane, “Thank you.” I smile at her.
Mia and Sloane said their goodbyes and we headed to the elevator. We make our way to the car as we head to our next destination which I’m guessing is lunch. I’m starving.
Now, I got a new piece of evidence. Andrea betrayed Mia and set her up because she wanted money from some guy named Carter. It’s nothing, but it could still lead to something. I told you, this job is worth it once I get Mia to open up some more.
