Chapter 5

The intelligence report burned in Kurumi’s hand.

Location: The Florian Triangle.

Subject: Gecko Moria, Warlord of the Sea.

Rumor: A mysterious treasure box that "steals time" from those who open it, kept deep within the vaults of Thriller Bark.

"So, he has it," Kurumi whispered, standing on the deck of her Marine cruiser. The wind whipped her twin tails around her face. "The Toki Toki no Mi, Model: Zafkiel isn't lost at sea. It’s part of a Warlord’s hoard."

Her grip tightened, crumpling the paper. Her instincts—the borrowed muscle memory of a thousand warriors—screamed at her to sail there immediately. But her mind, sharp and calculating, held her back.

Moria was a Warlord. He commanded an army of zombies. He had Oars. He had the Shadow-Shadow Fruit. Even with her knowledge of Rokushiki and her developing Haki, she was merely a Lieutenant Commander. She would be slaughtered before she stepped foot in his mansion.

"I need a battering ram," she mused, a cruel smile touching her lips. "And luckily, the wildest battering ram in the East Blue is currently making a mess in Alabasta."

Monkey D. Luffy.

He would defeat Crocodile. He would go to the Sky Island. And eventually, fate would drag him into the fog of the Florian Triangle.

"I will wait," she decided, tossing the report into the ocean. "Let the Straw Hats soften him up. When Moria is on his knees, unconscious and defeated… I will be there to pick the fruit from his pocket."

Time Skip: The Climb

While the world turned its eyes to the fall of Crocodile and the ringing of the Golden Bell in Skypiea, Kurumi was busy painting the seas red with pirate blood.

She didn't chase the Straw Hats. She stayed in the Grand Line’s first half, hunting mid-tier bounties with ruthless efficiency.

* Month 2: She mastered Soru (Shave) and Geppo (Moonwalk). Her aerial mobility finally matched her visual processing speed.

* Month 5: She apprehended "Wet-Haired" Caribou’s brother, Coribou, single-handedly. The bounties piled up.

* Month 8: She finally unlocked Busoshoku Haki (Armament). It was faint—an invisible armor rather than the black hardening—but it was enough to hit Logia users if she concentrated.

By the time the sea train began chugging towards the city of water, Kurumi stood before Fleet Admiral Sengoku’s desk via Den Den Mushi.

"Lieutenant Commander Kurumi," Sengoku’s voice crackled. "Your patrol record is impeccable. You are granted leave for R&R in Water 7 while your ship undergoes repairs. Do not cause trouble."

"Understood, Fleet Admiral," she replied, her voice sweet as honey.

Chapter 5: Masks in the Water City

Water 7 was beautiful, a city of fountains and canals. But Kurumi wasn't there for the scenery.

She had shed her Marine coat. Today, she wore a civilian outfit—a Gothic Lolita dress of deep crimson and black frills, a parasol resting on her shoulder. She looked like a wealthy tourist, harmless and delicate.

She sat at a café near the jagged edge of the island, sipping an espresso. Her Observation Haki, now a steady hum in the back of her mind, picked up a chaotic energy approaching.

"MEAT! IS THERE MEAT?!"

Kurumi lowered her cup. There they were.

The Straw Hat Pirates. They had just arrived, their ship Going Merry looking battered and broken. Luffy was shouting, Usopp was marveling at the bulls, and Nami was shouting orders.

Kurumi watched them with clinical interest. They are strong, she assessed. But unrefined. They are about to face CP9. If I intervene, I save them pain, but I risk altering the timeline. If Luffy doesn't invent Gear 2 and 3 to beat Lucci, he won't be strong enough to beat Moria later.

"Excuse me, mademoiselle!"

A blur of blonde and black suit pirouetted in front of her table. Sanji, the cook. His eye was a heart.

"I couldn't help but notice your beauty outshines the very fountains of this city! Would you care for a—"

"I'm afraid I'm waiting for someone," Kurumi interrupted, smiling politely. "But you are very kind, Mr. Cook."

Sanji froze, struck by her voice. "S-She spoke to me…"

"Oi, Sanji! Don't harass the locals!" Zoro grunted, walking past with his swords clanking.

Kurumi’s eyes flicked to Zoro. The Swordsman. Her "Melee Mastery" wish itched. She wanted to test her rapier against his Santoryu. But not today.

"You seem like a lively bunch," Kurumi said, standing up and smoothing her dress. "Be careful in this city. The water is deep, and there are predators wearing shipwright uniforms."

It was a subtle warning. Just enough to satisfy her conscience, vague enough to change nothing.

"Predators?" Luffy tilted his head. "Like sharks?"

"Worse," Kurumi giggled. "Leopards."

She walked away, leaving them confused. As she turned the corner, she passed a tall man with a pigeon on his shoulder. Rob Lucci.

Their eyes met.

Lucci stopped. His instincts, honed by years of assassination, flared. He smelled blood on this girl. Not literally, but the scent of a killer.

"Civilian," Lucci stated flatly. "You walk with too much purpose."

Kurumi paused, unfurling her parasol. "And you, Mr. Shipwright, walk with too much silence. Galley-La must teach excellent posture."

She didn't bow. She didn't salute. She just smiled that dangerous, hollow smile and walked past the strongest assassin in CP9 history.

Ignore them, she told herself. Let them take Robin. Let them destroy Enies Lobby. I need the Straw Hats desperate. I need them to level up.

She retreated to the shadows of the lower city. Her role here was done. She would wait for the Aqua Laguna to pass, and when the Straw Hats set sail for the Florian Triangle…

She would be the ghost trailing in their wake.
