Chapter 52
The night began with tacos – because of course it did. The two of you had decided on your favourite little taco truck, the one tucked between a laundromat and a corner shop, neon lights buzzing faintly above the window. The smell of sizzling meat and warm tortillas filled the air, mingling with the faint chill of the evening.
Dani leaned against the counter, grinning as she ordered way too many tacos for two people. “We’ll eat them all,” she insisted, handing you a plate piled high.
You laughed, shaking your head. “You’re insane.”
She smirked, eyes glinting. “Insanely charming.”
You rolled your eyes, but your smile betrayed you. “You’re chaos.”
“And you’re stuck with me,” she teased, bumping her shoulder against yours.
The two of you sat on the curb, legs brushing, tacos in hand. Salsa dripped down Dani’s wrist, and you reached over with a napkin, wiping it away. She grinned. “See? Already domestic.”
You snorted. “You’re a mess.
“And you like cleaning me up,” she shot back, winking.
*
After tacos, Dani tugged you toward the park. It was late, the playground empty, the swings creaking softly in the breeze. Streetlights cast golden pools of light across the grass, and the stars glittered faintly above.
“Race you,” Dani said suddenly, sprinting toward the swings.
You groaned, chasing after her, laughing as she hopped onto a swing and pumped her legs dramatically. “I win!” she declared, hair flying.
You grabbed the swing beside her, sitting down. “You’re impossible.”
She grinned, leaning over to bump your shoulder. “And you adore it.”
The two of you swung side by side, feet kicking at the night air, laughter echoing across the empty park. Dani jumped off mid-swing, landing with a triumphant pose. You followed, stumbling slightly, and she caught you, arms wrapping around your waist.
“Smooth,” she teased, her breath warm against your cheek.”
The chaos continued – climbing the jungle gym, sliding down the slide, chasing each other across the grass. Dani laughed so hard she nearly fell off the seesaw, and you doubled over, clutching your stomach.
“People would think we’re drunk,” you said between giggles.
“We’re drunk on tacos,” Dani replied, collapsing onto the grass. “Same thing.”
You flopped down beside her, both of you breathless, cheeks flushed from laughter.
*
The night quieted as you lay side by side on the grass, the stars twinkling above. Dani;s arm draped across your waist, her fingers tracing lazy patterns against your side.
“Comfortable?” she asked softly.
“Very,” you whispered, turning to face her.
Her eyes softened, her grin fading into something gentler. “You know, I could stay like this forever.”
You smiled, heart fluttering. “Me too.”
Silence lingered, filled with the sound of crickets and the distant hum of traffic. Dani’s gaze held yours, her expression thoughtful.
Then, casually, almost like she was commenting on the weather, she whispered, “You know… I really do love you.”
Your breath caught, eyes widening. The words hung in the air, simple, but heavy, filling your chest with warmth.
You leaned in instantly, kissing her softly, your smile breaking against her lips. “I love you too.”
Her grin returned, brighter than the stars above. “Good. I was hoping you’d say that.”
The kiss deepened, laughter fading into something slower, sweeter. Dani’s hand cupped your cheek, her thumb brushing your skin as your lips moved together. The world around you disappeared – no playground, no city, just the two of you under the stars.
When you finally pulled back, breathless, Dani whispered, “We’re ridiculous.”
You laughed, pressing your forehead against hers. “And we love it.”
She kissed you again, harder this time, her arm tightening around you. The stars glittered above, the grass cool beneath you, and for the first time, the words ‘I love you’ felt like home.
You lay there for a long time, tangled together, whispering nonsense and sweet nothings. Dani teased you about how you’d blushed when she said it, and you teased her back about how casual she’d been.
“I was smooth,” she insisted.
“You were reckless,” you countered, laughing.
“Recklessly smooth,” she corrected, kissing your nose.
Eventually the laughter faded into quiet. Dani’s fingers traced your hand, her voice soft. “I meant it, you know. I really do love you.”
You kissed her again, whispering against her lips. “I know. And I love you too.”
The stars watched silently as you made out again, the night wrapping around you like a secret.
