Chapter 35

The Katseye house was unusually quiet for a Friday night. Most of the members had retreated to their rooms, leaving the living room free for Dani and you. The space was cosy, with fairy lights strung across the walls, casting a soft glow over the couches and the pile of blankets Dani had dragged out earlier. A bowl of popcorn sat on the coffee table, half-full, and the faint hum of the television filled the room.

Dani padded in from the kitchen, wearing plaid pyjama pants and a loose white t-shirt that hung comfortably over her frame. Her hair was tied back in a messy bun, a few strands falling loose around her face. She carried two mugs of hot chocolate, steam curling up from the surface.

You were already curled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, wearing soft cotton shorts and a hoodie. You looked up as Dani handed you a mug. “Thanks,” you said, smiling.

Dani plopped down beside you, tucking her legs under the blanket. “So,” she said, eyes gleaming mischievously, “I picked the movie.”

You narrowed your eyes. “You didn’t pick something scary, did you?”

Dani’s grin widened. “Maybe.”

“Dani…” you groaned, already clutching the blanket tighter.

“Come on,” Dani teased, nudging your shoulder. “It’ll be fun. Besides, you’ll have me to protect you.”

You rolled your eyes but couldn’t hide your smile. “You’re enjoying this way too much.”

The movie began, the opening credits rolling across the screen. Dani leaned back, sipping her hot chocolate, while you curled closer, already bracing yourself.

The first jumpscare came quickly – a sudden flash of movement, a loud burst of sound. You yelped, nearly spilling your drink, and dove into Dani’s arms. Dani laughed, setting her mug down on the table. “Wow, that didn’t take long.”

“Don’t laugh at me!” you whispered fiercely, burying your face against Dani’s shoulder.

“I’m not laughing,” Dani said, though her grin betrayed her. She wrapped an arm around you, pulling you closer. “Okay, maybe a little.”

Another scare sent you clutching to Dani’s shirt, heart racing. Dani tilted her head, whispering teasingly, “You’re basically glued to me now.”

“Good,” you shot back, muffled against her. “You’re my shield.”

Dani chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. “Best shield you’ll ever have.”

The movie played on, each scare met with another jump, another squeak, another dive into Dani’s arms. Dani teased relentlessly, whispering things like, “Don’t worry, I’ll fight the ghosts for you,” or “You’re safer than the main character, trust me.” But her teasing was gentle, affectionate, always followed by a squeeze or a kiss to reassure.

At one point, you peeked up at her, eyes wide. “Why do you even like scary movies?”

Dani shrugged, smirking. “Because they give me an excuse to hold you like this.”

You groaned, hiding your face again. “You’re impossible.”

“And you love it,” Dani whispered, brushing her lips against your temple.

The blanket cocooned you both, the warmth of Dani’s body steady against the tension of the movie. You clung tighter with every scare, fingers curling into Dani’s shirt, legs tangled with hers. Dani’s laughter softened into quiet hums, her teasing giving way to gentle strokes along your arm, soothing you even as the movie grew darker.

When the climax hit – a sudden, terrifying reveal – you practically leapt into Dani’s lap, clutching her tightly. Dani laughed so hard she had to pause the movie. “Okay, okay, you win. Maybe this was a little mean.”

You glared at her, cheeks flushed. “You think?”

Dani kissed you quickly, still smiling. “But you’re so cute when you’re scared.”

You huffed, but your arms didn’t loosen. “You’re lucky I like you.”

“I know,” Dani whispered, pressing another kiss to your lips.

The movie ended eventually, credits rolling across the screen. Dani reached for the remote, turning the volume down. You were still curled against her, blanket wrapped tight, refusing to move.

“See?” Dani teased softly. “You survived.”

“Barely,” you muttered.

Dani tilted her head, brushing her nose against yours. “But you had me. And I’ll always be here.”

You smiled, finally relaxing. “Okay… maybe scary movies aren’t so bad. As long as you’re with me.”

Dani grinned, pulling you closer under the blanket. “That’s the deal. You get scared, I get to hold you. Works out perfectly.”

The night settled into quiet comfort, the glow of the fairy lights soft against the walls, the warmth of the blanket cocooning you both. The movie had ended, but the cuddles lingered – playful, flirty, and safe, the kind of moment that felt brighter than any spotlight.
